The leaves are mostly down, the tourists have gone home, and the locals are settling in for the winter. It's too early for cross-country skiing. This is a time to lay back and decompress from the hordes of summertime visitors from Chicago and Detroit. Here in the rich cherry country, the picking is all done, and it's time to ease into the long season when the bay freezes over. One of the great things about hitting the road is getting a chance to meet some of our Dharma Cafe listeners. At every show, we can recognize them when they start singing along lustily to our theme song. It's great to hear their comments about the show -- radio doesn't have a live audience, so we can't feel the vibe of the crowd as we go along. When we get out on the road, we talk to the listeners and find out what the Dharma Cafe experience is for them. We love it when people bring their kids, who turn out to be regular listeners, as well. It takes us back to the days of hiding the transistor radio under the pillow and using the earplug, that wondrous monophonic ancestor of the earbud, to listen late into the night to the magic of rock'n'roll radio -- for a kid stranded in the 'burbs, a powerful call to freedom, and the magical potential of that big world out there. We think about those kids whenever we go on the air, and of their parents, too. You don't ever really stop longing for freedom, even when you don't have to hide your earbuds anymore, and somehow the music, the real stuff, is the tambourine man that leads you toward that dream. Even if our grownup listeners only get to lay their burdens down for a few hours a weekend in our virtual cafe, or if they can forget the tasks, the worries, and the shadowy obstacles that loom ahead, for a little while at a concert, those moments are precious. For many of us, those moments in that cafe of the soul are much more than an escape. They're a meditation, an affirmation, a drink from a deep well. Krishnamurti called those moments a benediction; a bestowing of something good. That's what the music means to us, and we hope that comes across both onstage and on the radio. A listener introduced himself in Grand Rapids a few nights ago: "I love the show". "Thanks, man. Thanks for listening". "It's great, but y'know, it's a funny thing, and I hope you don't take this the wrong way". (Always a good time to brace, and adopt a faux nonchalance) "Of course not..." "Well, you know how we always form a mental image of radio personalities?" "Uh, ye-e-e-eah..." "Well, from your voice, I imagined you looked like Ben Afleck... (long pause)...You don't". Oh, well, I consoled myself with the fact that, with my meager knowledge of pop media, I can't recall what Ben Affleck looks like, but I'm sure he's getting tired of people telling him that he doesn't look like me! Peace, and remember, music really can save the world. - -Pete ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' November CD release tour schedule! A very special guitar workshop: The First Annual Holiday Feast of Riffs and Hot Licks. January 7, 2007 (this is a new date). This cornucopia of valuable techniques will sample a variety of topics that will be explored in depth in our upcoming 2007 series of guitar workshops. A bountiful buffet of riffs, this workshop will demystify the upper regions of the neck and then plunge into a generous sackful of scales, modes, chord progressions, harmonics and stylized licks that will have you slumped over your guitar right into the new year! While the rest of your family and friends celebrate the holidays, you'll be practicing the mixolydian mode, and loving every minute! This workshop would make a perfect holiday gift for the intermediate to advanced picker in your household; a spouse, a kid, or an in-law you just want to get out of the house for a while! A great way to beat the post-holiday blues! This day-long seminar will include two intensive 3-hour sessions, with a break to explore the cafes and shoppes of beautiful downtown Northampton, MA.
