I have been listening to the new album quite a bit, and think it is terrific. (Of course, I think ALL Pete and Maura's stuff is terrific!) One of the best things about listening to covers of songs, in my view, is that it often prompts me to go seek out the original version. With the advent of iTunes, this is much more easily accomplished than it once may have been. I have a playlist set up featuring the original version, then TK's version. Makes a nice listening experience. I feel they "out-Byrds-ed" the Byrds on Eight Miles High. That track just rings out! Pretty Girl Why has always been a favorite Steve Stills / Buffalo Springfield track, and this version is wonderful. Galveston is strong. And I think Maura's singing on Gypsy Rose is especially strong. It's an interesting contrast to Tracy Grammer's approach, which is a bit more gentle and slow. The whole record is terrific, and probably the most full expression of their "jangly guitars" to date. Here's a question.... How should female singers handle songs that are written from a male's perspective? On this record, Galveston, Pretty Girl Why, Raging Eyes and Gypsy Rose are notable examples. Tracy Grammer did Solitary Man recently on one of her records. In a concert I heard her say that her mother thought it odd, but Tracy explained that a good song is a good song, and the gender of the interpreter shouldn't matter. I agree. Anyone feel differently? I'm looking forward to TK's swing through the Mid-West the next couple of weeks. We're hosting them this Friday at a house concert, and plan to see them in Cleveland, Detroit, and maybe one other venue. This week marks the tenth anniversary of our first Kennedys show on Oct 26, 1996. I'm curious if anyone on this list has an earlier experience? Dave wrote the song to be song from a woman's perspective, but Maura's said it's just too "weird" that way. :) For a long time, Tracy too changed the pronouns (she too thought it was weird), but Dave kept insisting it was to be sung from a woman's point of view and, since his death, she has been singing it the way he wrote it. Otherwise, I agree that a good song is a good song. Lucy Kaplansky covers Dave's "Cowboy Singer" and doesn't change the pronouns. And Kevin So covers Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". ~ Sheila Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 20:04:02 EDT From: JanglePoets@aol.com Subject: Re: [JP] Re: Songs of the Open Road >This week marks the tenth anniversary of our first Kennedys show on Oct 26, >1996. That was a really horrible week for me, so TK really and truly came to my emotional rescue. In a week of dark clouds, the discovery of TK was my silver lining. :-) Speaking of "this week," IIRC yesterday was P&M's 12th wedding anniversary, and this Wednesday the 25th will be Maura's birthday. :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 20:04:42 EDT From: JanglePoets@aol.com Subject: [JP] Subject: Re: Songs of the open Road I've been looking forward to this disc for a long time. Evolver is one of my all-time favorite discs, and their cover of Gene Clark's "Here Without You" has a lot to do with that. Pete & Maura do justice to the Byrds like no one else is capable. They love those songs so much that they take them another step beyond the originals. I am a Byrds fan of 40+ years. I was lucky enough to catch them in 1966 when Gene Clark was still a member. Gene was probably the best songwriter of the bunch, and his own albums in the mid-'70s were wonderful underappreciated gems. So, I'm very happy to see his "Gypsy Rider", too, from those years. Of course I liked the other Byrds, too. So, "Sin City" is nice to have on here. I was also a Buffalo Springfield fan, a Dylan fan, a Dave & Tracy fan, and a Nanci fan. So, I flat out LOVE this new disc! Very likely to be in my "Top 5" at the end of the year. ~Richard Hill Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 20:09:20 EDT From: JanglePoets@aol.com Subject: [JP] Re: Songs of the Open Road Hi - New "lister" here with my first post. I think all the songs are winners and are all equal to or improve upon the original. What attracts me to TK is their love of the music is equal to their talents unlike so many other musicians who are out there for less noble reasons. Having said that if I had to pick just one song I'd pick Sin City. - -Chris Johnson Columbus, OH To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. - Theodore Roosevelt Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 23:21:47 EDT From: JanglePoets@aol.com Subject: Re: [JP] Subject: Re: Songs of the open Road In a message dated 10/23/2006 8:15:17 PM Eastern Standard Time, Richard Hill writes: Of course I liked the other Byrds, too. I forgot to say -- For a couple of years TK ("When I Go") were languishing behind Chris & Meredith Thompson ("Tanglewood Tree" and "The Mountain") in the Dave Carter Tribute Sweepstakes. "When I Go" is on Stand -- "Tanglewood Tree" is on Clearwater - -- "Mountain" is on Chris & Meredith Thompson Live. But then Songs of the Open Road comes out, and SHAZAM!!! P&M go roaring into the lead, with both "Gypsy Rose" and "Happytown." So whereas the score had been Thompsons 2 - Kennedys 1, it's now TK 4 - C&M 2.
