This third weekend was the Payoff, as I wound up striking it rich. Kennedys 9/23/06 Rose Garden Coffeehouse, Mansfield MA This was an important date on my calendar for more than a month in advance. Since I missed the Transperformance in August when TK did the Everlys, 9/23 at the Rose Garden was my one best chance to get the new Kennedys album Songs of the Open Road at a Kennedys show before I see them again in December. The Kennedys have been Rose Garden favorites for years -- I'd seen them there before with local folk group the Nashville Clippers opening. This time the show was absolutely packed like sardines, with paying customers sitting on the floor next to the stage because every chair in the house was taken. They had to put a sign on the outside door that said "sold out." There was a fantastic full-page write up of TK in a local paper earlier that week, the Attleboro Sun Chronicle (Thursday, 9/21/06), the best Kennedys newspaper article I've ever seen. Life is Large Dharma Cafe River of Fallen Stars Half a Million Miles Namaste 9th Street Billy Nuah Gypsy Rose Midnight Ghost Wall of Death Chimes of Freedom Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall Sin City Oh Boy (w/ Mac and Rae Anne of Nashville Clippers) Stand (w/ Nashville Clippers, opener Antje Duvekot, and me!) (encore) Long Sirens, with 8 Miles High Not Fade Away Maura guitar solo Beatles riffs (and "House of the Rising Sun") Pinball Wizard and traditional ending, segueing to Life is Large That was my first time doing "Stand" onstage with TK, and I even know to do the "Allah Buddha Yahweh" part while Maura sings "stand" at the end. Put that pipeweed in your pipe, and smoke it! Now how did the Kennedys know to identify me as "Mad Baggins"? Eh? :-) Antje Duvekot's opening set for TK was absolutely mesmerizing -- she had the crowd in the palm of her hand. She reminded me of when I first saw Dar Williams in 1994 on the small club circuit -- crisp, clear songwriting, looks and voice like an angel, adequate guitar playing, and a fragility that brought down cascades of laughter during her funny song intros. Better stage presence than Dar, to boot! What a talent just waiting to be discovered. Dandelion I Was Lost Jerusalem Christian Boys Pearls Long Way I didn't know until I got there that anyone was on the bill to open for TK, and I'd never heard her before either. What a nice surprise. Antje Duvekot! Chris & Meredith Thompson 9/24/06 Club Passim, Cambridge MA I saw my friend Amanda at both the Rose Garden and at Passim, another nice surprise for me. Amanda got to witness 2 rarities -- me on "Stand," *and* a sighting of my own wife going with me to one of the shows. I can't think of another who's ever seen that before! Now the missus has seen the Nields, the Kennedys, *and* the Thompson twins! :-) This Passim show had been billed as a "farewell show" for the duo, Meredith opting to call it quits for awhile, although some of us are holding out the hope that Chris will enjoy success carrying on the torch of the folk troubadour as a solo. And despite this undeniable element of bittersweetness about the whole occasion, a good time was truly had by all. In fact, Meredith was in rare form, spinning off one funny story after another in spur-of-the-moment song intros. The girl can't help it? "What Was She Thinking???" :-) The Thompsons' sometimes wacky pre-song banter is very reminiscent of the goofier side of Nerissa and Katryna Nields, when they truly get going off on a tangent into the Wild Blue Yonder. But, hey, as Cyndi Lauper sang -- "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" -- ! :-) Andy Brewster lent expert assistance and poise, accompanying C&M on bass. Wildest Sea First Step Lines of Longitude Mars (Lori McKenna) Lift Up Your Voice and Sing Harvest Moon Tanglewood Tree (Dave Carter) 3 Day Ride Neruda Bend in the River (Kennedys) Hallelujah Old Man of the Mountain Clearwater Wood and Stone The Mountain (Dave Carter) Autumn Leaves Gently, Like Water, Cracking Stone (Tim Mason) Promise Come Back Baby Black Eyed Susan Seize the Day Lullabye Children Amazing Grace (encore) Edelweiss ("The Sound of Music") 25 songs! - a long 2-set show. Chris & Meredith pack a punch with their multiple musical stylings -- jazz flute ("Autumn Leaves"), blues ("Come Back Baby"), a cappella ("Harvest Moon" and "Amazing Grace"), along with all of their many original songs mixed in with covers of other artists. I'd never heard them do either the Lori McKenna or the Tim Mason one before. And both "The Mountain" and "Bend in the River"! Anyone who does both Dave Carter *and* the Kennedys easily gets the Mad Baggins Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval in my book! :-) It was certainly a celebration of the culmination of 10+ full years of Chris & Meredith Thompson as the duo, and the twins sang their hearts out in front of an appreciative full house of supportive family members, fans, and friends. I've been following the Thompsons for only a little over a year myself, but what a year it's been. This show was one to be remembered, and capped off a whole year of great memories for me, memories to be savored for a long time to come. As the autumn leaves fall, the light goes, and the days shorten, I think of the Frank Sinatra song and think wistfully to myself -- "It Was a Very Good Year." She's already made it in a big way, Bruce. She played Newport this summer! I've had her booked at the me & thee for over a year now and specifically requested that she open for Ellis Paul last winter---and that touched off an entire tour w/ her opening for Ellis all over the country. She's got three CDs out----she's well on her way. I'm so glad that the Kennedys had a big crowd at the Rose Garden. I was worried that they wouldn't since they just played last weekend at the Boston Folk Festival. A highlight for me of that weekend was getting to see the Kennedys play at a special reception in the Campus Center. They invited a whole crew of WUMB Summer Acoustic Music Week alumni up on stage to sing "Stand" as well. It was great... A friend reports that the Kennedys were fantastic at the fest down in CT that weekend too. Kathy me & thee p.s. Check out my new blog at the me and thee website. (Bowing) It could well be then, that the overflowing Rose Garden crowd was for her and not necessarily for TK at all! About half the crowd sounded like they were there to see her. :-) What's the Sanskrit word for "enlightenment"? ;-) It's always a sure giveaway, when about half the crowd leaves after the opener before the headliner goes on. And believe me, I've seen that happen, on the rock club circuit. :-) >I've had her booked at the me & thee for over a year now and specifically >requested that she open for Ellis Paul last winter---and that touched off >an entire tour w/ her opening for Ellis all over the country. Yeah, the explanation of the recent Boston show having drawn the crowd to the Rose Garden now looks less plausible than before. I like the Newport Folk Festival spillover theory better. :-) >A highlight for me of that weekend was getting to see the >Kennedys play at a special reception in the Campus Center. Thanks to all who spread the word! This Jangle-Poets list is one way to do that, especially for Left Coasters and others who don't get to see TK all that often! ;-) I must confess to being motivated to post these reviews whenever I can! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2006 00:07:43 -0400 From: "Kathy Sands-Boehmer" Subject: Re: [JP] Trifecta Payoff Weekend - Kennedys, Thompsons Bruce, You are a walking-talking-writing PR machine. ;-) Your dedication and loyalty to the Kennedys and the Nields is to be applauded.
