My buddies back in Virginia couldn't understand why my family chose to spend part of our precious summer up in Jersey. To them it was the hellhole of Exit 13, the sulfurous Venusian inferno seen by terrified tourists on their way to the World's Fair. They didn't know about the mossy lake banks, the crickets at night, and the cool dark coves where a small wooden canoe could linger on a hot August afternoon. There used to be a big rock in the woods near my grandparents cabin. We called it, imaginatively, "the big rock". I used to climb stealthily over that rock, plastic tommy gun in hand, ready to gun down any Nazis lurking on the other side. Maybe they were holed up in a cave down by the road to Ringwood. My hero was Sergeant Saunders, the courageous G. I. on "Combat", a TV series about WW II. He and his buddies were saving the world from out-of-control ideologies that threatened to turn the clock of history back to the Middle Ages-a few kings and priests ruling with an iron hand over masses of peasants. America was the beacon of light against that darkness, and Sergeant Saunders and his brave buddies were keeping the flame lit. So, Mattel machine gun in hand, and Cousin Brucie on the transistor radio, I scanned the woods for Nazis. Years have gone by, and my grandparents are gone. Strangers live in the cabin now, but the big rock is still there. Sergeant Saunders, who turned out to be actor Vic Morrow, died while filming a "Twilight Zone" movie in which he again played a G. I., this time in Vietnam. It flashed across my mind at the time that it was strange karma, indeed, that the brave TV sergeant who thrived fighting a virtual WW II died in a movie-set Vietnam. Somehow the sanitized pixel screen war turned real, and reached out to claim him as a flesh and blood victim, along with a couple of child actors. The movie was fake, of course, a trick of legerdemain, but the tragedy was real, as it always is for the victims. I'm a grownup now, and I still love to paddle the canoe into a quiet cove on the lake, but there's no way I could shoulder my Mattel and creep over the big rock again, looking for TV enemies. I've read Martin Luther King, and Gandhi, and Tolstoy, and, in school, I heard the words of the mystic of Nazareth over and over; "love thy neighbor", and "Turn the other cheek". Now I know that Sergeant Saunders was, for sure, a hero to my buddies and me, but he was just another victim, "collateral damage", to the cynical forces who put him in harm's way. So I return this year to Ringwood, and this time, Maura and I have guitars strapped over our shoulders instead of cap guns, and we come not to celebrate the ideologies that canvass the high schools for cannon fodder, but to raise our voices along with Dr. King, and Gandhi and Tolstoy, and work toward a day, maybe after we're gone, when our "leaders" actually read the words of men wiser than them, and act out the creed that they profess on Sundays, to "study war no more". We come back to sing "Chimes of Freedom" and a bunch of other rabble-rousing songs, at the Highland Peace Action Festival. We'll be singing and playing and, and we hope, taking part in lively debate all day, but if we get a chance, maybe we'll swing by the lake for a few minutes. It sure is nice to hear a frog jump in the humid August twilight. Come to think of it, I guess that's a definition of peace. A bullfrog croaking out, "love thy neighbor". If only it was that simple, and maybe, if we don't fall asleep on our watch, it might be, for our children's children's children. Namaste. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' August tour schedule: Sunday, August 6, 2006 Highland Peace Action Music Festival, Camp Ocawasin, 625 Macopin Road, West Milford, NJ 07480.
