It's almost ten o'clock, and the sky to the West, over the Pacific, is still cornflower blue. For the first time, we're struck by how much the Mendocino hills resemble Norway, another land of the late night summer sun. We're sitting at a picnic table in a grove of native Black Oak. The big Redwoods are a few miles to the North, up the Eel River Canyon. A few picnic tables over to the left of us, Steve Earle is expounding on the pleasures of trout fishing; maybe he's channeling resident spirit Richard Brautigan, who haunts the Russian and the Mad Rivers in these hills. A couple of tables the other way, Utah Phillips is talking about the long line passenger trains; the California Zephyr, the Empire Builder, and the one we'll be riding in a couple of days, the Southwest Chief. The sunset lingers on, setting the stage for a midsummer night's entertainment, while Arlo, Sarah Lee and Johnny, and the rest of the Guthrie crew tune up under a big Oak. Up on stage, Wavy Gravy is exhorting the crowd to rock out, folk in, dance and sing and embrace their Big Mama the Earth, just as he did when he emcee'd Woodstock back in the day. Wavy and his crew, the Hog Farmers, have been dishing out food all weekend, like they did for the hungry hippies on Yasgur's Farm. But yams and homegrown beans aren't Wavy's specialty. He's a clown. A rock'n'roll, Zen kinda clown. When the Iron Curtain was casting it's long shadow, Wavy and his buddy Patch Adams used to travel around Russia, handing out red rubber noses and confirming that people everywhere laugh in the same language. Now he spends his time out here on the ranch, teaching busloads of inner city kids at his Camp Win-A-Rainbow. They learn from the Zen Clown how to perform circus tricks, how to work as a team, and how to turn off their media gadgets and watch a Condor soar. There used to be a clownish Zen monk called To-Fu. He walked around ringing a big, loud bell. Most people thought he was mad, but he explained that he just wanted to make sure everybody was awake. Remember, "Buddha" means "Awake." When Wavy wants to wake people up, he and his buddy Cloud Moss get a bunch of musician friends together in this grove of sacred oaks and make a big, joyful noise, using Stratocasters and Twin Reverbs instead of bells, but the effect is the same, and the dancers, just like the laughing Russians, all speak in the common wordless tongue of transcendent joy. Does this festival make money? Sure, but clown noses aren't costly, so after the expenses are paid, the proceeds go to Bread and Roses, the foundation set up by Mimi Farina to bring music to isolated and sick folks in the Bay area, and to Seva, the organization put together by Wavy and the Hog Farm M.D. Larry Brilliant, that has provided cataract surgery, the "gift of sight", for tens of thousands of people in India. So these fun lovin', free livin', dominant paradigm-defying pranksters have accomplished some great things in this pass around the planet. Long live rock'n'roll altruism and folk rockin' activism, but when we give rightful kudos to U2 frontman Paul Hewson, let's not forget that years before Bono Voce, there was Wavy Gravy. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' July tour schedule: 7/1 & 7/2- Greater New Bedford Summerfest, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, New Bedford, MA. Our next CD, "Songs of the Open Road," is now in the final stages of production, and will be in stores October 3rd. We'll likely have copies to sell at shows sometime this summer. The disc is a collection of our favorite songs by other writers, and songs that we always listen to when we travel the highways and byways of America. It's our favorite road music, and so we recorded our own versions! "Songs of the Open Road" will be our second release on the very groovy Appleseed Recordings label. Songwriters represented on this disc include Victoria Williams, Jimmy Webb, Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Dave Carter, Nick Lowe, Bob Dylan, John Stewart, Bob Neuwirth, Mahalia Jackson and Nanci Griffith. We recorded many more songs than we can fit on this disc, so we imagine there will someday be a volume two! ******************************************* 5) Kennedys weekly radio show on SIRIUS Satellite radio Our weekly show airs on SIRIUS Satellite radio channel 24: SIRIUS Disorder, every Saturday from 7am - 10am eastern time, and every Sunday from 11am - - 2pm, hosted by us, Pete & Maura Kennedy!
