I found a nice old pair of grey corduroy jeans in a thrift store somewhere on the road, probably in Texas, a few years back. They were softened up and not too tight; the perfect pair of long-distance driving duds. Well, those jeans cushioned the bumpy roads across Arkansas, and the potholes of New York in the springtime, and they were part of our traveling rig from Maine to San Diego, and from Seattle to Key West. You can always find stage clothes, but a good pair of driving jeans is an essential part of your kit on those long trips down Route 66. Anyway, we have a good friend who lives on Cooper Square in the East Village. He lives, quite literally, on the square, sleeping nights under the big black cube sculpture, and resting during the day on the sidewalk, near the booksellers and the coffee vendor's van. Everybody looks out for him, making sure he's fed and clothed, and has what he needs. After all, he's a brother to us, and a good neighbor. Maura once asked him, on a cold night, if he had a place to sleep. He smiled, "oh yeah, I've got a place". He pointed a forefinger down toward the sidewalk, like the Buddhas in Tibetan paintings, "Earth", he smiled more broadly, "the planet Earth". A few days later he elaborated, telling us that he lived for a while with gypsies in Coney Island, and they all considered the planet their home, the whole planet. Paul is a painter, and a sculptor, a mystic and a musician. He told me once that he grew up in Alabama, and he and his best buddy would walk around with saxophones, conversing all day by playing phrases on the horns. Consequently, music came as easy to him as speaking, so he had no need for simple categories like jazz, rock, or folk. It was all just conversation on different subjects. Paul used to go over to Europe with Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra, picking up assorted gigs in the village when he would arrive back in the States with a little pocket money. One time he ran into his buddy Juma on St. Mark's; "Hey Paul, remember that Hendrix cat?" "Yeah, good player. Heckuva nice guy, too". "Well, he rented a house up by the reservoir in Woodstock. Let's head up there and jam". Paul spent some time up in the Catskills, and then wound his way back down to his own corner of the planet. A truck pulled up on a hot August day. "We need some cats to build a stage upstate. Wanna work?" Paul hopped in the back, headed back upstate, and, after the nails were all pounded, spent the Woodstock festival lying back in a hammock under the stage. Paul lived for a while in an artist's loft in Brooklyn. They'd sleep in the gallery, paint all day, and throw parties at night. Coltrane and Eric Dolphy used to come by with their horns. But Paul doesn't play anymore. "Sax players, man. They die young. Coltrane, Birdb&". His voice trailed off. He's happy now with the basics. Survival and friendship, sleeping on the Earth. It's hard for us who know Paul, just like we know our own families, to see him as a "mark", the New York term for a potential victim, but there are those who see him that way. Since we've known him, he's had his paints and brushes ripped off a few times, and even worse, his finished canvasses. He's been mugged for his bike and his backpack, too. The day before we moved out of the East Village, I saw Paul in his usual spot on the sidewalk. He asked about us first. "How you doin',man. How's Maura?" "We're, okay, how about you?" I got rolled, man. About five o'clock this morning. They took my bike, but they hung around long enough to beat me up pretty bad. His left eye was closed, bruises and cuts everywhere. He didn't seem angry, just tired, beat. He's been on the streets of New York a long time, and this was part of the price for his freedom. But it hurt me to see him like that. "The worst of it, man, is that they did a number on my clothes. Every seam in my pants got ripped. I can't even stand up in public." I walked across Third Avenue to our place, anger and compassion welling up, along with the feeling of helplessness that comes with seeing a loved one suffer. I told Maura the story, and then I rummaged around for my travel bag. There in the bottom, right where I stuffed them after our last trip to the West Coast, were the corduroy jeans. They were worn in in all the right places, and they had gone with me down a lot of roads, but now they would have a new gig. When someone imparts wisdom to you, there's no way you can repay in kind, so a symbol or a utilitarian tool are perhaps the only things you can barter. Maybe the jeans would be a little bit of both. The last time we saw Paul, we were pulling out of town for new digs and another new direction in life. There, under the big black cube, he was sound asleep, trusting in his neighbors and resting like a baby on the planet he loves. Oh yeah, the jeans fit just fine. If you see him in Cooper Square, make sure he's got a bike, and maybe some paints and brushes, but don't offer him a saxophone. Horn men, they die young, and Paulb&well, long may he run. We'll see you 'round the planet somewhere, brother. ******************************************* 3) Kennedys' June tour schedule: Saturday, June 3, 2006 - Peaceful Hollow Music Festival, located at the Carroll Community College Amphitheater (rain or shine), 1601 Washington Road, Westminster, MD 21157.
