So I'm adopting (adapting?) the Cone Head approach for the sake of the overall flow of the events, and cross-posting this to both Jangle-poets and the Nields Nook. Saturday 3/25/06 -- It was an easy drive for me from Quincy to Fall River to see TK on a Saturday night. No rush hour to beat, and going out of the city instead of in was a real relief. I didn't even have to miss dinner with the family, which is a usual occupational hazard attendant upon these reviews. Pete had a stageful of guitars and stringed instruments lined up on the stage when I got there. The venue, Narrows Center for the Arts, was a funky 3rd floor loft with a vintage industrial feel, just a stone's throw from the huge I-195 bridge spanning the Taunton River. Pete's instruments included a specially strung 7-string guitar, an electric sitar, an electric ukelele, and what Pete called a mandoguitar, sort of a cross between a mandolin and a guitar. Wow. This was the most impressive array I'd ever see Pete play in one show. Pete said that there are numerous Kennedys recording projects in the works, either already in the can or in the process of production. Maura looked as sensational as ever in a ragdoll-looking ensemble. It really had been a long time (for me) not seeing TK (several months). TK played the standard Half a Million Miles Tour package, wowing 'em with a well-chosen selection of old and new. They were actually the openers at this gig for Mary Lee's Corvette, singer-songwriter Mary Lee with her trio, who was striking in her own way with her great looks, catchy pop hooks and intriguing lyrics. TK played -- Life is Large Dharma Cafe Chimes of Freedom Half a Million Miles Namaste 9th Street Billy Nuah Midnight Ghost Sirens (incorporating 8 Miles High & Pete solo of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue) Not Fade Away Stand (encore w/ Mary Lee) After the show I told Pete that the extensive solo excerpt from "Rhapsody in Blue" was the best unusual Pete solo (IOW not a usual standard) since he did Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" in its entirety at Hingham a couple of years ago. It was great seeing my DJ friend Kevin at the show. If he's reading this, I hope he looks us up at the George Fox Pavillion at FRFF. If we're lucky, TK might play at the GFP again this year. Sunday 3/26/06 -- The Ridgefield Library in Ridgefield CT is mostly a snap for me too, 'cuz I've seen TK there before with Cadence, I know where it is, and it's mostly a straight shot from Boston on I-95 and the Merritt Parkway. I was cutting it close though this time, because I had to sing "What Wondrous Love" in church at 10AM, then duck out early to catch the 2:00 show. But the traffic was crisp for almost 3 and a half hours, and as I walked into a packed room at the library full of both adults and kids to see a free Nields show, there were friendly smiling familiar faces there to greet me -- Sarah and Joe with their daughter, and Amanda and Cadence, who had a vacant seat right next to them in the 2nd row. So I was in like Flint! After the show, I confirmed that that was Dan Bonis doing sound too, who I'd seen at Rick Rock's and at FRFF. I'd never seen TN at Ridgefield before, and with the audience mix of both adults and children, N&K put on a show that was more of a mix of "adult songs" and "kid songs" than I'd ever heard them do. IOW, it was as if the show were half "Family Stage" set, and half normal N&K performance. I thought the balance was just right, showing once again the Nields Magic for both versatility and verve. Nerissa announced that this was their third-to-last show before her maternity leave, the other two shows being the IH next week and a later show in Bedford MA. I've been trying to make every Nields appearance I could this year, since I know that the Nields layoff will be a long sad time of No Nields Shows for me personally, just like the last 2 Katryna layoffs. As if I care about TN very much! :-) N&K played -- Ticket to My House The Fox Went Out This Train This Town Is Wrong (reading) When I Let You Into My Closet Aiken Drum Tailspin Jeremy Newborn Street (reading) Glow in the Dark Plastic Angel Going to the Zoo The Unicorn Song Easy People Ain't That Good News There aren't that many back-to-back days with shows like this for me anymore, so this was a lot like the old days! :-) Next week -- N&K's farewell (minus one) show at the Iron Horse, their second-to-last show before FRFF! (cadence, by the way, is amenable to doing her highly successful drum workshop again, which even lured some budgiedomers to the GFP). where the GFP will be is anybody's guess, but we think we will be putting up some road signs at FR so that people can find us easily. john Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 19:46:06 +0000 From: keny7744@comcast.net (Ken Yavit) Subject: Re: [JP] What is George Fox Pavillion? Can you clue me in on this? the George Fox Pavilion has been at FR since 2000 - located at the very top of the hill where the shuttle bus stops. It is a Nields/Kennedys fans campsite which includes the GFP (named for George fox in the TN song Best Black Dress); Club Century - the bar canopy (with a bar and bar stools and operating blender - our motto is "it ain't camping if you can't make a frozen margarita") and the Dharma Cafe - the kennedys component of the "compound," with fine teas, coffee, espresso. other features include a pumped hot water shower (in a shower tent complete with shelves) and an amzaing field kitchen capable of feeding 100 people (and includes a pizza oven for those late night song circles) with some real gourmet food. several of our folks have visited happytown (and sang). for the past 2 years, the kennedys have come up on thursday afternoon to put on a show for us, and last year cadence carroll held a drum workshop, all of which we hope will happen again. the song circles are a mix of pros, semi-pros, and amateurs, all on equal footing, and we have been fortunate enough to have people like we're about 9, carla ulbrich (who camped with us), nick annis, friction farm, cadence carroll, gandalph murphy and many others stop by - including jack hardy once. i don't knpw where we will be this year, but probably near trees and water. we will try to put up signs. when we start our planning in june, we will post our plans and needs (it's a cooperative effort) on both the nields and kennedy lists. tj Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V8 #14 *********************************
