A great sound. The track is less than a half-mile away, running right through the center of town, alongside old Route 66. Flagstaff is one of the great hiking towns, situated on the southern rim of the Colorado Plateau, the immense uplift of land that the Grand Canyon slices into, revealing rock layers five billion years old, way down by the river. Now that's an intelligent design! On a short break in our Southwestern tour, we're exploring the canyons that cut through the Coconino sandstone down to the Arizona desert. Oak Creek Canyon, the prettiest and most dramatic, because you can drive right through it, has a cool history that includes lots of western movie locations. Some of the offshoot canyons are pretty colorful, as well. There's Soldier Pass, where a maverick brindle bull roamed wild in the thick manzanita and pinion, and Casner Canyon, where Mose Casner hid his gold in a Dutch oven. Then there's Wilson Canyon, where back in 1885, Richard Wilson, an Arkansas bear hunter, went after a legendary huge grizzly with only a small bore rifle (insert Cheney joke here). Days later, cowboys found the bodies of Wilson and the bear locked in a death embrace. (Insert another Cheney joke, if desired). And watch your step in Dry Creek Wash, where pumas still haunt the Ponderosa pines. Last but not least, don't forget Secret Canyon, where polygamous Mormons hit out after their alternative lifestyle was outlawed in the 1880s. The more things change, the more they stay the same, so pack your camping gear if your own lifestyle is out of the mainstream. Tomorrow we explore some of these haunts, following in the footsteps of the Sinagua, the Yavapai, and the Apaches, the original settlers who camped here for four thousand years until they found out to their misfortune that they were sitting on a huge lode of copper ore (a final gratuitous Cheney/Halliburton joke, if you wish). After that it's back on the road, just a couple of gold prospectors heading down the mother road to California, only our gold isn't the kind you carry in sacks. It's the freedom to follow a dream into the western sunset, and that's worth more to us than a mother lode of lottery tickets. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' March tour schedule: San Diego date just added - Tuesday, Feb 28th!
