Put down that eggnog, my friend, and pick up the Book of Revelations. And isn't that the guy from FEMA on CNN, bragging about their accomplishments in 2005? Wonder how that played in New Orleans? Then, out of the murk and mire of the ongoing horror movie called cable news, there emerged, like the red nose on a mutant reindeer, a bright spot. It grew from a speck of light into a sort of beacon that even outshone the glaring logos for the twelve days of Armageddon. It was Bono's face, rock star shades intact, on the cover of Time Magazine. Person of the Year, along with the Gates', that tweedish couple from down the block. Not some guy who started an endless war or scored bogus contracts. Just a singer and a couple of humble computer nerds. Now, we used to tour with a bunch of Irish guys. They all knew Bono and the other fellows in U2. Back in the early '90's, the teeming metropolis that is Dublin was still a small town. The Irish roadies and musicians we knew were fond of saying things like, "Bono thinks he's God," "Bono needs to screw his head back on," or "Bono needs to come down the pub and remember that he's just like the rest of us." Well, we've since decided that they were wrong. Maybe Bono isn't exactly like the rest of us. For one thing, he's been fantastically successful in his creative efforts, a fact that may not endear him to his struggling peers still playing "C'mon Eileen" at the local pub. He's also done something that few in our generation have been able to accomplish on a large scale. He's taken the incredible wealth and leisure that was handed to us by our parents, the Greatest Generation, and he's taken steps to leave the world a better place than it was when he was born a tiny rock singer, crying, no doubt, louder than any other babe in the nursery. He's still crying now, but it's a melodious wail, and it's a plea for justice and an end to what he calls "daft poverty": the poverty that doesn't have to be there: the poverty that persists because the wealthiest of the wealthy still want more. Sound melodramatic? It is, and who better to play the part of the hero than a black-leather clad rock star riding into town on a tour bus, with a green Gretsch slung over his shoulder. He's got the microphone and he's got the Jumbotron, and in this day and age, those are the symbols of power. The rest off us will never get our hands on those kind of power tools, but maybe we can tear our eyes away from Armageddon Week for a while and emulate a real hero, not a trumped up cowboy hero, but a real hero to millions in Africa, and a heck of a rock singer, as well. More power to ya, lad. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' January CD Release and South-For-The-Winter (mostly) schedule: Wednesday, January 4, 2006 - A Third Place Pub & Cafe, 12 East Magnolia Ave, Eustis, FL 32726.
