We got in late last night, wending our way down the dirt roads that delineate the squared-off parcels of land out here. Our first glimpse of the farm in daylight comes when we make our way upstairs (the living quarters are below ground, for tornado protection and energy conservation) and step into the sunlight that floods the great room and kitchen area through massive windows. A sea of six-foot tall prairie grass surrounds the house. For the first time, the phrase "amber waves of grain" really hits home. All the way to the horizon, the "Indian Grass" flows like an ocean of gold. This was the world of the Plains Indians and the buffalo. For eons, this ecosystem was self-sustaining, the grass sending ten and twelve-foot deep roots into the dry soil, reaching for deep aquifers, and creating a network of strong tendrils underlying millions of acres of prairie. When the Europeans came, looking to produce shallow rooted annuals like corn and wheat for markets back east, they plowed the prairie grass under, in a process the natives called "turning the grass upside down." The Anglos environmental blunder, brought on by greed and a lack of foresight, or a lack of care about the future, led eventually to the disaster of the Dust Bowl, when the rootless soil simply dried up and blew away. The owners of this farm north of Wichita have replanted acres of native tall grass, and, come the winter, they will have forty head of buffalo grazing their reclaimed prairie. Sitting in the big bay window, sipping mugs of coffee and reading Wendell Berry's new book, "Blessed are the Peacemakers," it seems that anything is momentarily possible. There's not a big-box store or a fast food chain in sight, and it seems like Nature does inexorably correct herself. In the course of that process, will we be part of the debris in the next dust bowl? I guess that answer is blowin' in the wind. Maybe we need to pay a little more attention to the wind, and to the cranky rooster's wake-up call. Maybe we need to keep our ear to the ground, and listen for the steady thunder that will herald the return of the buffalo, long before we see them on the horizon. Blessed are those who warn against turning the grass upside down, for they shall inherit the amber waves of grain. Now, for another cup of joe. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' December CD Release and holiday tour schedule: December shows: 12/3/05 - Caffe Lena, 47 Phila Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. The video serves as an appeal for donations to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, and features New Orleans street musicians, the very people who benefit from this organization. Visit our web page this week to view this new video, and if you're moved, please send your donations to help the very people who give New Orleans its unique sound and vibe.
