This was the same kind of disaster that Memphis Minnie and Charlie Patton used to sing about, only now it wasn't on a scratchy 78 record, it was real. It was now. We all remember the feeling of collective shock when Harry Connick, Jr., the CNN reporters uncovered the "slave ship" conditions in the convention center, and all of our hearts sank when we realized that help was going to come too late, too slow, for hundreds of these suffering people who looked just like our own moms and kids and cousins-just like us. Across the nation, compassion stopped being a phony campaign buzzword, and became a gut reaction. There was no other possible response. But there was a feeling of helplessness, too. This was a job too big for any of us to ride in on our mighty steed, fix, and ride off into the sunset. This was a change in our whole way of looking at America, this was a real need, an immediate one, and it was frustrating for most of us to not be able to simply get in the car, drive south, and hand somebody a gallon of water and a blanket. Around the middle of September, we got a phone call from John Hall. John has been pulling great grooves out of his beat-up Strat for a good while now, playing some great stuff on Bonnie Raitt's early records, and penning some classic rock songs like "Still the One" and "Dance with Me." He really came on the radar in the late '70's when he co-organized the "No Nukes" benefit and movie. He pulled in Bonnie, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Jackson Brown, the Doobies and a bunch of others to prove that rock had not only a loud voice but also a conscience. That was back in the Seventies, and now John was on the phone, brainstorming about ways to help our family of man down in the flood. "John, we've got a show coming up together at the Town Crier in Pawling, an hour up the Hudson from New York. What if we made it a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians Clinic?" John played for years in a band called "Orleans," so his ears perked up. "They're not just collecting money; they're asking people to send instruments down to Lafayette. There's a dance hall down there that's letting them use their space to collect guitars and drums and trumpets and saxes, so the musicians in exile can start getting gigs." John volunteered to do some background research, and an hour later, after talking with Phil Ciganer, the owner of the Town Crier, we had a benefit show on the books. Both acts and the club would donate a big portion of the proceeds to the NOMC, and we would encourage the audience to haul instruments out of the attic and out from under the bed and bring them to the show. Whatever came in would be sent down to the to the New Orleans musicians who, without a doubt, need instruments the way most of us need food and water-music is their lifeblood. On the night of the gig, people started showing up with guitar cases. One guy brought a lovely Les Paul, and another fellow come to soundcheck, dropped off a couple of Fenders, and then took off to play his own gig. He didn't even want a receipt and never gave his name-a real Lone Ranger. All in all, we collected half dozen good instruments, and raised about a thousand bucks. Everything went straight down to the Musician's Clinic. A politician recently asserted that "America has never left our destiny to the whims of Nature, and we're not about to start now." Looking at the footage of the drowned Crescent City, it's hard to imagine a more idiotic statement. Robert Johnson once wished, in a song, that he had possession over Judgment Day, but he was man enough to admit that he didn't. None of us control this planet, although we do have control over our own damage to its precious atmosphere, a gift that we don't own. We just have it on loan for a few years, as stewards, and then we pass it on to the next generation. As long as we can keep that long view-this isn't about us, it's about the whole planet, a few islands in a vast ocean, populated by interdependent creatures for whom compassion is the only real option-we can accomplish something in our own small way to make a difference for our brothers and sisters in the South who are still suffering in a big way. Swami Sivananda: "Roar like a lion. Be up and doing!" Adam Clayton Powell: "Keep the faith, baby." ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' November CD Release tour schedule -- Midwest CD release tour!: 11/3/05 - United Methodist Church, 14861 Washington St, Jackson St entrance, at I-96 Exit #23, Marne, MI.
