She is something of an expert on Tibet and Buddhism. She has been to Tibet many times. She told me that it was a Sanskrit word and that there is a Tibetan equivilent. Namaste is not just a word of greeting it is a gesture, one we have all seen. You put your two hands together with the fingers pointing up in front of you. I often do it each time P&M say the word in the song. Of course I also stand when they sing /Stand/. We suggest the Red Cross, at _www.redcross.org_ (aoldb://mail/write/www.redcross.org) , but there are many places to donate. We will be planning other ways to raise money for the relief effort in the weeks to come. Stay tuned. ******************************************* 1) August Tour diary: Jammin' With Vassar It was back in the hazy 70's. A time of wide-open exploration for a kid raised on the British Invasion and the Greenwich Village Folk Scare. I knew that there was a whole world of real folk and roots music out there, like a vast, mysterious Narnia, just waiting for me to find the right portal to reveal its secrets. The movie "Deliverance" was a glimpse. So was the album "Will the Circle be Unbroken." But I wanted to get all the way in, to hear, and see, the real folks playing this stuff-bluegrass, blues, rockabilly, mountain music, so when I got offered a job manning the performer's instrument check booth at the Ohio folk Festival, I grabbed my acoustic guitar, threw a few things in my backpack, and sped off in the trusty VW Microbus. (40 mph was speeding in a Microbus) What a weekend it was! Arlo sang "City of New Orleans" backed by a slick band of Nashville pickers who sat down in a semicircle behind him. Tom Rush sang "Who do you Love." John Hammond turned us all onto the incredible fireball that is Robert Johnson, and Eric Andersen hipped us to Merle Haggard. I was hearing so many things for the first timeb& John Hartford, Norman Blake, and Vassar Clements brought it all back home, and the best part was, everybody checked their instruments! So I met them all. I was the kid who plied them with questions about strings, picks and vintage Martins, and I soaked it all up like a sponge. After the Saturday night show, I walked back to the college dorm that had been commandeered for the staff and performers lodging. Walking down the dark hall, around midnight, I heard a fiddle playing in one of the rooms. The door was slightly ajar, and I peered in. Vassar was sitting on his bed, alone, eyes closed, with his ever-present pipe clenched between his teeth. Pouring out of his fiddle was music of a kind that I had never heard before. At such close range, its power was overwhelming and joyful. Like any brash kid, I ran to my room and grabbed my guitar. When I sat down and started "beating rhythm," Vassar's tanned-leather face crinkled in a slight smile, but his eyes stayed closed. He didn't need to see anything. He could probably tell from my groove that I was more of a rocker than a bluegrass cat, so he segued into "Norwegian Wood." It wasn't like Lennon's lilting waltz, though. It was driving, ancient. The way Coltrane and Hendrix might have jammed on it. Following Vassar through the landscape of his improvisation was like following a Sherpa up the Himalayas. Everything was new to me, and my own instrument seemed to open up to wider and wider vistas. Before long, Randy Scruggs and Jody Maphis had poked their heads in, and they ran for their guitars. Pretty soon the little room was packed and rocking. "Norwegian Wood" segued into something else, and something else again, and Vassar never opened his eyes. He just spun out a tale like the Odyssey, told by a fiddle; like a Bach fugue, but totally spontaneous, happening in a luminous moment that lasted all night. As the session finally wound down, we all stumbled, laughing, out into the sunrise. Sleep was pointless. Across the street, Eric Andersen and Townes Van Zandt were sipping coffee in a sidewalk cafC), basking in their own kind of coolness. As for me, I'd gotten a ticket to Narnia, and my life was changed once again by the transcendent energy of music, as transmitted by a real Yogin, a master, a conjure-man of the highest order, so when I heard this week that Vassar had passed away, I picked up my guitar and played "Norwegian Wood" for him. I'll never spin the same melodic tale that he did, but I can still hear it in my head, and in my heart. Thanks, Vassar. ******************************************* 2) "HALF A MILLION MILES" has been officially released (August 23) and is in stores now! Last month at the Summer Acoustic Music Week on Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire, we spent an entire week with music enthusiasts, living and breathing music. A highlight of the weekend for us was the student concert, which was a 12 hour marathon in which all 100 students played for the instructors and for each other. A personal high point for us was the energetic, original, and very surprising Mike Delaney song, "I Wanna Be Maura Kennedy." You can hear this performance on Mike's web site. When you hear Mike giggling, it's because Maura stormed the stage and danced around Mike as he sang the song. www.mikedelaney.org ************************************************************ 7) Kennedys TV alert!
