Billy gives Maura a a great deal of room in which she can exercise her vocal range and really, really sing. Live reminds me of The Band - one of my favs. Namaste is Ok, and I know a lot of people like it, but it's a little to "sweet" for my taste. the new album, as a whole, is trememdous - some of the best lyrics TK have ever done. tj Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2005 22:56:37 -0400 From: "Frank Hartge" Subject: Re: [JP] Favorite song? I agree that "Namaste" is strong and loaded with "jangle". My favorite remains the title track, I think because of the great auto-biographical nature of it. It could easily be sub-titled "The Ballad of Pete and Maura". That song will always resonate with me, since it was the song they played as the soundcheck last October when they performed at our first house concert. "Listen" is a wonderful track, and the instrumental bridge is a knockout...I wish I could edit it into an endless loop! I also like the sound of "Nuah"...in fact, I heard the instrumental bridge used on some NPR show as one of those segments between stories a week or so ago. To me, the most striking thing about this album is that Pete sings a lot...they do real duets on many tracks. Pretty unusual in The Kennedys catalog. A strong album, without a doubt, and a real tribute to their ten plus years of marriage and music-making!! The official release date of TK "Half a Million Miles" has come and gone without a lot of comment. Any favorite songs on the new CD? I like "Namaste" a whole lot. I sort of saw "Dharma Cafe" as the "single" of the last album "Stand," and that's how I view "Namaste," as the "single" of this album. Both "Dharma Cafe" and "Namaste" give me that same happy jangly feeling that I've come to associate with Kennedys classics "River of Fallen Stars" and "Life is Large." My favorite song changes weekly, but right now I'm really liking Midnight Ghost. I agree with Bruce that Namaste could be considered the "single" of this album, but I think Midnight Ghost would run a close second. My favorite song on the album is Namaste, as I've been telling P&M since they first started playing it. Next up would probably be half a million miles. Namaste, Gordon P.S. I've been signing my emails that way since shortly after the first time I heard the song. Hmm. I like "Midnight Ghost" a lot, probably followed by ""Time Ain't Long" and "Everything's on Fire." "Namaste" strikes me as a very Kennedys-esque song, and they have done a thoroughly good job of communicating the really delightful concept behind the word, but I personally don't find it as compelling as some of their other "hits": "Stand" and "Life is Large" have equally simple and powerful take-home lines, but I find them more...moving? layered? I'm not sure. And I agree with Frank that I like hearing more of Pete. ~'becca On 8/28/05, Nieldsforever@aol.com wrote: > > The official release date of TK "Half a Million Miles" has come and gone > without a lot of comment. I've been signing my emails that way since shortly after the first time I heard the song. That reminds me that Ken Stiffler (who I don't think is on this list anymore) inspired my use of "mad baggins" on the Nields Nook. :-) The name "mad baggins" (inexplicably) shows up on Gandalf Murphy's double CD "Flapjacks From the Sky." I was on the 3rd show of a 3-show Slambovian weekend (Passim, PACE, Grey Goose), and when the band wanted me to take their picture with their camera after the show, I was hoping Sheila could do it, but she was busy with closing out the merch table. So I got on the "Flapjacks" album kind of through sheer whimsy of the Buddha. :-) I long labored under the mistaken notion that "Namaste" was going to be the title track of the new Kennedys album. There is a Namaste Cafe website that I stumbled upon one day. But it seems to have disappeared from the WWW. It was at namastecafe.com. Kind of like a cross between Namaste and the Dharma Cafe. :-) Bruce a/k/a mad baggins Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V7 #51 *********************************
