We don't play, officially, every year, but we do go every year, and of course, we do play. It's a clan gathering, like the ones held in traditional cultures around the world, probably ever since the last ice age receded. It's a time for people with a shared culture, a shared path, maybe even shared life and death concerns -- the harvest, the buffalo -- to get together. In every time and place, there's a shared need to transcend the mundane through the transpersonal energy of group celebration. In the case of Falcon Ridge, it's all about the music. The fun part about describing the festival from our side of the footlights is that there are no footlights. In fact, most of the performances take place in broad daylight. The magic is that there is no real separation between audience and performer. In certain African tribes, there is no specific word for "performer" as a separate entity from "audience." There's just "music." It's something the whole village does together. The Baka Forest People in central Africa sing together at sunrise. They keep singing throughout the day while they prepare meals and wash clothes (they play the river like a drum), and again as the sun goes down. After dark they have magical choral songs for their rituals of communion with the Molimbo, their notion of God, which is, in essence, the very forest that surrounds them. They're in perfect harmony, quite literally, with nature. Most of these musical rituals take place at Falcon Ridge, as well; except, perhaps, for washing the clothes. It's an experience of harmony with nature, with other people, who of course are inseparable from nature, and with music itself -- the ongoing stream of melody that the Greeks called the Melos. Thoreau called it the "universal chant." Pythagorus called it the "music of the spheres" and Brian Wilson called it a "good vibration." Down in Mississippi, Sister Rosetta Tharpe sang "Up above my head, I hear music in the air. There must be a god somewhere." The music is always there. When we sing and play we just tap into the Melos. To experience this groove with several thousand kindred spirits is a deeply moving and fun experience. Our favorite moments? Little Darius and Dahlia singing harmony, and eventually lead, on "Didn't It Rain," and the whole crowd on the hillside turning, "Stand" into a celebration akin to a Baka Molimbo ritual. Up above our heads, we heard music in the air, all 15,000 of us. There must be a goddess somewhere. If you like, we could give her a name: Melos. ******************************************* 2) Get our new CD now! Kennedys w/ Cadence Carroll 4:15PM Life is Large Half a Million Miles Namaste w/ House Band 9th Street Billy Chimes of Freedom Time Ain't Long Midnight Ghost River of Fallen Stars Stand w/ Joziah, Tink, & Sharkey Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams 5:15PM Sunday in the Rain Circus of Dreams Everyone Has a Broken Heart Yodel Song Gates of Eden (Bob Dylan) She's in Her Own World Alice in Space w/ Cadence & TK The Gandalf contingent in the crowd were passing out carnations throughout the front row area, and a couple of Gandalf fans were also passing out Slambovian derbies, a hat I'd seen fans wearing at previous shows. At least Rick Rock, Brad Moore, Stephen and I were given bowlers to wear. During "Alice in Space" Maura, Pete, and Cadence, all wearing the same hat too, took theirs off and flung them into the audience. Then after the set ended people in the front of the crowd started throwing their carnations onto the stage. It was a surreal Circus atmosphere, reminiscent of Maura's throwing flowers into the audience during TN's FRFF set on "Living It Up in the Garden" some years back. Seeing Gandalf Murphy was such a highlight for me at this year's FRFF. They had played FR only once before, the year of the Dave Carter Tribute. Sunday's mainstage this year was a dream lineup for me, back-to-back-to-back sets by TN, TK, and Gandalf Murphy. If I had my druthers, it'd be TN, TK, and Gandalf Murphy every year at FRFF.
