"Great Day." This is a great way to open the Gospel Wakeup Call. EFO's done it before, although usually they have had Eddie Hartness with them. He missed this year's festival, but EFO incredibly played on without him. The whole crowd got on its feet to groove to "Stand." That must've warmed the cockles of P&M's hearts. IMO TK represent the best that FRFF has to offer, and if I had my druthers TK would play FRFF every year, just like TN. It actually hurt me to read the unkind things people were saying about TK last year. FWIW I'm with TK on this one. "Where there's a will, there's a way." If FRFF says "no Kennedys" and if even some of the fans say "go away Kennedys," *I* say, kudos to Pete & Maura for not losing faith in themselves, in the music, and in the festival, and for coming anyway. AFAIC the spirit of the festival and TK spirit coincide, mesh, and are wed in a perfect harmony of dedication to song and to sharing the good vibes. "One Heart, One Soul," that's TK and FRFF. So this year's "Stand" sort of reinforced in my own mind that TK are sort of the epitome of what FRFF means to me, summed up in that one word, the title of their contemporary folk anthem, "Stand." Stand up for what you believe, stand up for what's right, stand up for what you know is true. "Stand." Hang in there! Believe! Keep the faith! Troubles in your life? Troubles with your friends and relations and love-life? Troubles getting FR going for next year? Just stand, "Plant your sword in the sand." Do what you have to do, but just "Stand." A higher endorsement of TK I cannot give, than this. "Drift Away," a 70's hit by Dobie Gray. "Circle of the Sun," by Sally Rogers. TK "Live," from the new album. "Into the Mystic," by Van Morrison. EFO misidentified the writer of "Get Together" as Jesse Colin Young, who was at this year's festival. The song was actually written by Quicksilver Messenger Service's Dino Valenti d/b/a "Chet Powers." "Get Together" has to be one of the all-time great flower-power hippie anthems. The words still ring true, as true as the day they were written. Musical styles come and go, but "Get Together" still packs the power. "Amazing Grace"! Chris & Meredith Thompson weren't officially even *at* this year's festival, again, after playing FRFF in 2002 & 2003. My hat goes off to Pete & Maura for the generosity, the "amazing grace," of letting C&M do this one song by themselves. The same goes for the other performers, all of whom sacrificed some of their very own precious time. "Amazing Grace," a cappella and in 2-part harmony, was great, and the Thompsons received a warm ovation from the crowd afterward. Again, if I had my druthers, Chris and Meredith would be at the festival every year, for they also represent in my own mind the true colors of Falcon Ridge, true blue, their spirit and the spirit of the festival, as one. "On My Way." TK exude confidence and authenticity every time I've heard them "do" gospel covers like this one, not only at FRFF, but also a couple of years ago at Bethlehem Musikfest. TK have so many influences which run deep and true, and "gospel" is one of them, much to my surprise! "Operator." Don't know anything about this gospel standard! "People Get Ready." A great way to end the Gospel Wakeup Call, and it's been used for this purpose in past years too. The song "Stand" incorporates just enough of the "People Get Ready" idea that TK acknowledge Curtis Mayfield in the credits for "Stand." AFAIC, with a tip o' the hat to Pete Kennedy, it's just the "folk process." :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V7 #48 *********************************
