Here is the "Roots" workshop as best as I'm able to reconstruct it. Terry Kitchen - Dion's "Abraham Martin & John" N&K - Beatles "I've Just Seen a Face" Kennedys - Traditional "The Cuckoo" Vance Gilbert - Aretha's "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" Tracy Grammer w/ Jim Henry - Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho & Lefty" Terry Kitchen - John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" N&K - Ian Tyson's "Night Rider's Lament" Kennedys - Richard Thompson's "Wall of Death" Vance Gilbert - Traditional song he learned from John Martyn Tracy & Jim - Jackson Browne's "In the Shape of a Heart" Thus far "influences" of the various participating artists. Then Vance as workshop host asked each artist to do a song that they considered to be a representative "roots"-type original from their repertoire. Terry Kitchen's turn got skipped at this point. N&K - "I Haven't Got a Thing" Kennedys - "Time Ain't Long" Vance - (don't remember what he played) Tracy & Jim (don't remember what they played) Most impressive to me was TK's version of "The Cuckoo" in which Pete commandeered the House Band and gave directions, resulting in the stage nearly roaring with improvisational jamming sounds, guitar, bass, accordian, and fiddle. I don't think anyone "works" the workshop stages any better than Pete Kennedy, who puts the "work" in "workshop." This by way of a contrast to the sometimes "ho hum" routine of artists' patiently taking turns swapping songs while the others watch. The full-band jam on "The Cuckoo" reminded me a lot of my *own* folk-rock roots of Fairport Convention when Richard Thompson was still the guitarist of that group, ca. 1969 "Liege and Lief," especially "Matty Groves." It was rockin'. Ocean/Shore Blue (new song) Sunday Afternoon Love The "spillover" from the Dance Stage was so bad, Cadence had us squeeze really close all together, sitting on the ground around her while she played. In fact Cadence nearly stepped on my finger once, we were that close! :-) 4PM TK played at the Sirius Radio Booth. Dharma Cafe Namaste River of Fallen Stars (for Natalie & Gracie) Sadly, that Sirius Radio Booth set was the only time all weekend I saw the Riess family from Bethlehem. But I told Kate that TN had a tentative date at the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, where I had seen her and her family once before. It's getting to the point where FRFF is the only time I see some of my friends all year! Not like the old days, when I was doing road trips 12 months out of the year, seeing TN and TK throughout the NE. I'm afraid those days are gone.
