Ubiquitous to be sure, but always adding considerable value to every scene. The Thursday set on the hill was a testament to Pete and Maura's dedication to their fans, their music, and, of course, to Falcon Ridge. I know that each performer has his or her own way of interacting with fans, and I respect the reasons for keeping a safe distance. We're fortunate that the Kennedys are able to cross that boundary comfortably. I treasure the rendition of Falling Stars, which I will continue to request forever. Breaking bread is a great way to connect with other humans. My girIfriend, Susan, and I were honored to chat with Pete and Maura over those tasty kabobs, discussing beat literature, environmental essays, and other topics of substance. It was a great night! The Sunday morning gospel hour had so much energy that the music just exploded across the hillside. "Stand" was made for that setting. As much as I adore the duo version (and the trio with Cadence), that song deserves to be an anthem. The voices of EFO (esp. Julie) and the various others on stage, combined with the audience that seems to have learned it well, makes the Sunday morning Stand my FRFF highlight for the second consecutive year. And this time The Kennedys were officially invited! For a few minutes, we outdanced the dance tent! Sunday afternoon was hot, hot, hot, but that didn't prevent their extended set from being a celebratory moment. Sunday afternoon is so important, for we are beginning to grasp the thought that the end of the festival is nearing. There are few others who express their love for FRFF more than the Kennedys (except maybe the Nields) so the crowd was on the same wavelength, merging energy with the performers, and getting yet another rendition of Stand (along with the Slavonians!) Sweet. A special moment, that few got to see, was the Sirius booth performance. Just the two Kennedys with their red guitars and about ten people crowded around. The bleeding from the Workshop Stage and Dance Tent made us draw a little closer. There was a family there, three kids about 5, 7, and 9, whose father requested "Didn't It Rain" Pete and Maura encouraged the kids to sing along. When it was apparent how well they knew the lyrics, the older girl belted out the lines with great fervor and earnestness. She was so proud, as was Dad, as was P&M, as was anyone else within earshot. Other great moments included Preacher Pete promoting Zen, pantheism, and Beat poetry. The man is a direct desendent of Thoreau, Whitman, Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Woody Guthrie. As Becca and I agreed, we would happily attend any church in which Pete serves as preacher, as long as Maura is in the choir. But, you know, we already are members of the Kennedys church. It is a barnstorming tent revival held in multiple locations within a half a million miles. Plus we get to listen to the new cd on the ride home. Can't wait to do it again. TK was extremely busy during FR, with stage and offstage performances, and it took great effort for them to put in yet another performance at the GFP. We should appreciate that effort. it was particularly nice that they had a chance to sit and relax with us for a while, chat and unwind, and they seemed to enjoy it. it seemed to be fun all around. tj Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V7 #46 *********************************
