Today we got up and wandered across the street to the coffee shop, where we picked up the Times and a couple of cappuccinos for breakfast. After coffee, we walked up to Union Square, near where we spent yesterday at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art. We're supporting members now, and we spend a lot of time there with both the wrathful and the beneficent deities. Any time you combine a little gentle spiritualism, world culture, high art, and a good cup of spiced chai, it's a good day. We caught the subway at Union Square, all the way up to Central Park, and hiked through the zoo to the Summer Stage. Tonight was a special night, a program of the music of Nick Drake, performed by an orchestra under the direction of the jovial Robert Kirby, Nick's orchestral arranger on two classic albums (Five Leaves Left, and Bryter Layter) and probably the greatest living expert on the legendary Drake. Heck of a nice guy, as well. We emceed the show, so we got a chance to express our own admiration for the unique fusion of folk and classical music that Drake and Kirby concocted three decades ago. We were certainly preaching to the converted. Every Drake fan in New York was there, and as the sun went down, the fireflies came out, and we were suddenly all characters in a Monet painting. The concert was great, the music inspiring, the evening gentle. At one point Kirby stood next to us in the wings as Teddy Thompson sang "From The Morning". The arranger turned to us and said, "This one always gets to me". He was silent for a moment, listening, and then he turned to us again: "I remember Nick playing this for me, for the first time, in my flat". Then Kirby, a big, robust guy, pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and dabbed both eyes. What for us was a night of great music was for him a chance to remember how much he missed an old friend. After the concert, we walked all the way down Fifth Avenue, 60 blocks, to Washington Square. Under the arch, a street corner doo-wop quartette was rehearsing, working out parts. Over by the fountain, a hundred people had gathered around a young girl who was singing. Everybody harmonized on the old Reggae song "I Can See Clearly Now", and it seemed like we all could, in fact, see a little more clearly, as the ghost of Nick Drake, in the guise of a firefly, flickered in the twilight, and darkness settled over the city. ******************************************* 3) Kennedys' July touring schedule: 7/8/05 - Emmanuel Concert Series, located at the Emmanuel Congregational Church, 119 South Hamilton St, Watertown, NY.
