May 2004 It's been a great, relaxing week here in Estes Park. After the long drive, across the high plains from Nebraska, we've been holed up here, around 8,000 feet, in this little Alpine town on the front range of the Colorado Rockies. Our routine has been the same every day. In the morning we hike down to the cafC) for coffee and Alaska Baked Oatmeal. It's early spring here, and the Elk have come down from the high pastures of Rocky Mountain National Park, where the snow is still four feet deep, to graze on the new grass. Fearless, they roam the streets of town, and have taken over the golf course. Once in a while, a doe elk will wander across the cafC) parking lot. It's the only place in town where cell phones and wireless computers work. This is where we catch up on the outside world for an hour or so each morning. After breakfast, we bring our notebooks up the stairs to the upper room of MacDonald Coffee and Paper Shop, in the center of the village. The clerestory windows let in plenty of light, there's coffee and hot water for tea, and Mozart plays so softly in the background that you can work on your own melodies in your head without any dissonance. It's been so warm all week that we've gone down to the millstream and slept on the big rocks like otters while the cold snowmelt rushes by. Today is different, though. Last night, the high peaks to the West were shrouded in a swath of storm clouds, and this morning we woke up to a blanket of snow two feet deep, with high winds blowing more down off the range. This would all be well and good except that we're driving to Nederland, further south on this immense mass of rock that looms over Boulder. The route takes us over one of the highest roads in the country, the Peak-To-Peak Highway. It's over 10,000 feet for most of the trip, a third of the way up to where jet liners cruise. High winds, deep snow, precipitous curves (guard rails seem to be taboo in Colorado), and the ever-present shortage of oxygen up there should make for an interesting day. Undeterred, we load the Scion and head for the hills. Most of the locals know to stay in their cabins until the storm subsides, but they don't have a gig tonight. Surprisingly, the trip isn't a struggle against nature. The road is snowy but passable, the wind doesn't blow us off the mountain, and when we stop to share the pristine loneliness of a snowbound pasture at 11,000 feet with a dozen elk, life is indeed large. Relaxing at the cafC) in Nederland, a funky and thoroughly hippified old gold mining town at the head of spectacular Boulder Canyon, we make a list, over hot mugs of coffee, of the songs we wrote back in the upstairs room of the paper shop. "Half A Million Miles," "Namaste," "Midnight Ghost," "9th Street Billy," "Everything's on Fire," and "Nuah." With the two covers we've been doing on stage, by Richard Thompson and Bob Dylan, we're two-thirds of the way to writing that anniversary album that's been percolating in our late night highway drive conversations. Who knows, maybe by this time next year, we'll be preparing a new CD for release? But hey, that's still a long way offb& As a matter of fact, turning the clock ahead to the present day, we do have a new CD, including the songs from the paper shop in the Rockies, the Thompson and Dylan covers, and more fresh originals, all recorded, mixed, and ready for release. Look for "Half A Million Miles," available on Appleseed Recordings, in stores August 23rd. Rumor has it that there may be a couple of select shows at which advance copies will be available for sale. We can't say exactly which shows, but think Hillsdale NY and Newport, RI ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' June touring schedule: 6/1/05 - Goldhawk, 936 Park Ave, Hoboken, NJ 07030.
