Hag and his ace band, The Strangers, had, in fact, been working for the last hour or more, hammering tough songs, hard as iron, into the darkness of the Beacon Theater, each song clean and true, like nails driven into a honky tonk hardwood floor. The crowd paced the mezzanine restlessly, waiting for the next act. Someone, as yet unseen, was sending sparks into the uptown air, and everyone could feel it. A few minutes past, and the house manager dimmed the lights. As the curtain came up, wiry figures clad in black, with wide-brimmed hats, were already moving jerkily around the stage. Like industrious demons in a Bosch painting, they were already busy when we got our first glimpse of them. There was no standing around. They looked like electric wires were strung between the heels of their Cuban boots, shocking them like puppets in a noir Punch and Judy show. They were a gutbucket blues rock band. Haggard had called his outfit a "beer joint band", but this crew was something even raunchier. The lead guitarist looked ready to challenge anyone in the house to any kind of duel they might be foolish enough to accept, and the bass player, looked like a black and white B-movie Zorro. Most of them scowled menacingly, intent on their music, a murky gumbo of rockabilly chitlins with a black pepper blues etouffe. The piano player was the strangest of them all. Small and wiry, with stovepipe jeans and a long black coat, he looked like a stripling cut off of Johnny Cash. He didn't exactly play the piano. He danced with it, like a marionette packed with jumping beans. He was the singer, too, although he was no ingratiating lounge lizard. Ignoring the audience, he barked lyrics into the microphone, driven by some mad vision that only he could see, but was affecting us all like some kind of crazy force field. The voice was wracked, ruined, craggy. Haggard's instrument was aged, cured, polished like the stock of an old Winchester. But this was the snarl of a cornered bear, Old Slewfoot swatting at a pack of baying hounds. It was a voice from deep in the earth, where it's always hot. Whoever painted the bulls in the caves at Lascaux probably sang like this. Most of the songs were recognizable, although they weren't the comfortable versions from any "greatest hits" CD. These songs were bursts of heat lightening, scattered across the sky like broken glass, hanging there momentarily for anyone who dared crawl across that chasm to make a deal. And for ninety minutes, the deal went down. Outside was a version of reality that seemed more and more like a nation of cardboard cutouts. In this darkened room, ghosts were conjured; Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy, Jimmie Rodgers. Even Charlie Patton rose from deep in the Yazoo Delta mud, as the flood waters of American roadhouse music crashed through the levee. A real mad scientist was at work. Like Einstein at the blackboard, Buddha on Vulture Peak, Hank at the Opry, James Brown at the Apollo, the old testament prophets. They must have thrown off sparks like this. But you don't see it much anymore. This doesn't happen on television. This is no false American Idol, no smarmy preacher or blowhard politician. This was a real conjurer, in the same room with you, and you'd better have your wits about you, cause in the blink of an eye, it's over. As the last chord hung in the air like thick Louisiana humidity, the mad piano player looked at the crowd for the first time, and shook his bony outstretched fingers at us exactly the way a magician waves at his hat just before he pulls a rabbit out. Suddenly, the curtain closed, and it was over. A spell had been cast. A curse, maybe. Nonetheless, something powerful had happened. The songs were monumental, the blues a bottomless abyss, but the presence was the real thing. It's all in the wave of the hands. A hat trick, and then a disappearing act, and the bedrock foundations of the old theater split open to swallow up the ghost-ship crew of fallen angels. It was time to spread the word. Dylan was back in town. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys sign with Appleseed Recordings! We have finally finished recording songs for our upcoming release, "Half A Million Miles", which will be released on Appleseed Recordings, a very hip record label who's mission statement really struck a chord with us: "Appleseed Recordings is dedicated to sowing the seeds of social justice through music and exploring the roots and branches of folk and world music." We were able to order green power, which is 75% run-of-the-river hydro, and 25% wind power, for only 1/2 cent per killowat hour more than the standard rate. What's more, this rate is fixed for one year, and New York state eliminates the state tax as an incentive to buying green power. So for less than $5/month, we were able to switch from power that causes air pollution, acid rain, smog and global warming, to totally renewable, clean, green energy. If you get your electricity from Con-Edison, like we do, go to www.conedsolutions.com. If not, ask your electricity supplier about Green energy. This is a great way to celebrate Earth Day! ******************************************* 6) CRUISIN' with Falcon Ridge Festival at Sea Sept 5-10 2005 with The Kennedys, Susan Werner and Nerissa & Katryna Nields Reserve this cruise early.
