We were standing on a chilly street corner on the East side of midtown Manhattan, staring at a gaping hole in the ground. Watching and waiting. Three hundred or so New Yorkers stood with us, coffee cups in hand, all peering intently at the terminus of the Queens/Midtown Tunnel. Things had been quiet for an hour or so, but we knew they were coming. Coming through the tunnel. We talked, strangers, but also comrades thrown together like refugees on a merchant ship. We told our life stories, in condensed form, the way pilgrims converse with each other while they pass the time waiting to reach a shared destination in space or time. But our destination wasn't Canterbury Cathedral. No. Our holy grail was ten feet tall and weighed several tons, and was heading toward us at a fast clip. When things got boring, the Jersey guys behind us amused everyone by cheering wildly when the "walk/don't walk" signal changed. Suddenly, the crowd fell silent, and we pushed reflexively against the makeshift police barricades. Out of the maw of the tunnel emerged a modern day Ganesh, the Hindu deity of wisdom, in full Ringling Brothers regalia, followed by nearly a dozen of his brethren, each one clutching the tail in front of him with his trunk. Astride the lead elephant was a mahout in circus barker duds, announcing to the city that never sleeps that the GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH was, indeed, in town. We talked about a recent story in the news. At a resort in Thailand, a group of elephants, trained to carry tourists, became agitated and rushed uphill just ahead of the tsunami, effectively warning the village and saving many of the inhabitants. After the wave washed back out, the elephants, of their own volition, rushed back downhill and began moving rubble and pulling out stranded children. They carried the children to safety in their trunks. Sages from Saint Francis to the Dalai Lama to Smokey the Bear have reminded us that prayers for peace and safety go out to all sentient beings, not just members of our own species, or race, or religion, or nation. It's called universal responsibility and it is best expressed in the simple phrase, "Love thy neighbor." Boiled down to its essence, this distilled compassionate impulse was the immediate response of the Thai elephants, as if they were thinking of Marvin Gaye's passionate exhortation to "Save the children." As the ponderous pachyderms paraded past, we tipped our hoodies out of respect for their tireless peanut-fuled efforts. Long may they run. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' April touring schedule: Friday, April 1, 2005 - Heritage Center, 322 6th Street, Travis City, MI.
