Across the aisle, a soldier in camouflage is sprawled asleep across two chairs. Next to him, a man is reading a strange looking newspaper with a banner headline "King Arrests Bible Translator." What countries are these people from? Where are they going? Thirteen teenage girls walk by in formation, each one dressed in black and carrying a large plastic question mark in front of her. Our train is called. As the train rolls north along the Hudson, just south of West Point, two bald eagles sit on a tree limb over the river. Further north, near Beacon, a ruined castle rises out of the ice floes mid-river, and we dream of castles and Round Tables as we settle in for the journey, up past Ticonderoga and Bulwagga Bay, past the frozen lakes and the shanty towns of ice-fishing shacks, into snowy Quebec. A nation later, safely ensconced in the underground cocoon of Montreal's Centre Ville, Emmylou Harris joins Kate and Anna McGarrigle for a trio version of "Goin' Back to Harlan." A clip of Howlin' Wolf flashes on a film screen, and he fades to a shot of Mississippi John Hurt: "the good sweet candy man's in town". There are quite a few candy men and women in Montreal for the Folk Alliance and Strictly Mundial folk and world music gatherings, and as we sing "Stand" over the weekend, joined by Cadence Carroll, Sloan Wainwright, Cathy Fink, Marcie Marxer, and Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, we all feel a sense that we're singing the song back to America. Our home. The place we love. Not to the America on the twenty-four-hour cable news, but to the America of Paine and Jefferson and Whitman and Kerouac and Dr. King. The America that the world still looks to with hope. Singing from a foreign country, we raise our voices to carry across the snowy border, down the Hudson where the gospel changes might echo off the big granite wall of West Point and carry the two bald eagles downriver on soaring wings. All aboard the train, it's bound for gloryb& ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' March touring schedule: Thursday, 3/3/05 - The Blu Lounge, 197 North Eighth St. Williamsburg, two blocks from the Bedford Ave subway, Brooklyn, NY with the Bedsit Poets.
