The month capped off with a great double bill with our good buddies Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams -- a great way to come off the Thanksgiving holiday. On turkey day (or Tofurkey day, depending on your preference), we gave guitars to our New York niece and nephew (the kids seen jumping on the furniture in the "Free" video), and they immediately starting rockin' in the free world. The gifts were prompted by a conversation we had with the kids last summer, on a canoe in Lake Placid: "What kind of music are you guys into these days?" We expected, as usual, to be embarrassed by a list of au courant bands, none of whom we'd recognize. We were taken a little aback when they said, "Cream. Oh yeah, and Led Zeppelin. Tom Petty, too. And of course the Beatles and the Stones." "What about newer artists?" Well, we like Steve Earle a lot." These kids are ten and twelve, and they're already Mojo readers. We knew they needed guitars ASAP, and we were rewarded on Thanksgiving with a plethora of roots rock and folk riffs from these budding Claptons. Long live the music! Mid-month was spent down south, where we saw enough liberal bumper stickers to turn the red states a lovely shade of purple, and we seemed to meet mostly working class Democrats, with a sprinkling of Libertarian freemen types. In the absence of fearsome bible-thumping, snake handling manic preachers, we were prompted to wonder, "Who actually voted for Bush, anyway?", and "Has the media created the whole polarization brouhaha to try to create 'Wolf Blitzer presents The Civil War, Part II, brought to you LIVE'?" Most people that we meet on the road seem to want the same kinds of things; peace, prosperity, a better life for their kids. Our guess is that that's probably true all over the world. Back at the beginning of the month, we spent election day working as nonpartisan poll watchers on the South side of Bethlehem, PA. A wonderful day of camaraderie and high hopes for everybody, political differences aside. Some readers may not be aware that, as of right now, the votes still aren't counted in Ohio, so the whole thing is still up in the air. (Wouldn't know that from watching the mainstream news, wouldja? Check out www.truthout.org for the best coverage of this primary story). Whatever happens, our nieces and nephews will be jammin' on those Beatle tunes, so the future's lookin' good. "When the world seems to be falling apart, stick to your trajectory, hang on to your ideals, and find kindred spirits" (Joseph Campbell) ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' December touring schedule: Thursday, December 2 -- The Beat Club is proud to present at The Cutting Room, 19 West 24th Street, New York, NY: SONGS, MELODIES, GUITARS, PIANOS AND VOICES: Featuring The Kennedys, The Bedsit Poets (featuring edward rogers, Amanda Thorpe & Mac Randall), J.C. & Anphibius.
