The 20% in the middle wins and loses elections. Those folks voted for Reagan in 84, Bush in 88, Clinton in 92 and 96, and Bush in 00 and 04. The questions the Democrats need to answer before 2008 is why they lost that crowd again. Bush was my first Republican presidential vote since my days as a college Republican way back in the 80's. Why couldn't the Democrats come up with somebody I could support this time? The basic fact is the vast majority of people in this country are relatively conservative of economic issues and relatively liberal on social issues. However, when forced into an either/or decision, the swing voters seem to vote more on the economic issues. Find somebody like Clinton, who is credible as an economic moderate, and the Democrats have a very good shot to take back the white house in 2008. Also, I think the media and talking heads are misinterpreting the "morals" issue from the exit polls. I think voters were speaking of moral conviction. Whether you agree with Bush on the issues or not, there is very little doubt that he believes he is doing what is right for the country. Kerry, with the whole I voted for the war before I voted against it shtick, came off as just another politician saying whatever he needed to day at that moment to get elected. Bush was on message and consistent throughout the campaign. That counts for a lot, even if you don't agree with what he is saying. However, if history is any guide, the Republicans will squander the next 4 years worrying about prayer in school an the constitutionality of burning the flag, while neglecting important issues like reforming social security and figuring out what do about soaring health care costs - - which are on the verge of becoming a national crisis. 4 years from now, the problems won't be solved, and we'll have two inferior candidates to choose from again. It's a work in progress. As far as morality, it's all about allocating resouces. Our representatives determine that. Morality is something for individuals. There is much we can do.
