(Tolkien, "Lord of the Rings") The "light from the shadows" are the ideals of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. We must not, we dare not let that light go out. The Bushes and the Cheneys and the Rumsfelds and the Ashcrofts of this world, who would rob us of the fruits of our labors, are not the only ones who know how to "stay the course." We now have the challenge and the opportunity to show what kind of stuff we're made of, and to show that we know a thing or two about "staying the course" ourselves. It was painful, disheartening, and bitter having to endure EIGHT YEARS of Reagan, a curse if there ever was one, and yet we came through it, although to many of us it seems that the world and this country would've been better off had we not had to fight that fight for so long. And now, far from sweeping the bastards from power, the country has just swung and is now swinging even farther to the *right*, and we now face EIGHT YEARS of Bush and his cronies. It is painful, disheartening, and bitter to have to fight the same damn fight that we fought against Reagan, all over again. "The days darken and much evil is to come." We have a long road, and much to do. We kicked off at the venerable Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY, and then dashed down the coast for a rousin' outdoor set at the street fest in funky, bohemian Takoma Park, Md. After a couple of quick cross-country house concerts, we found ourselves onstage in Flint, MI, where the locals told stories about their hometown boy made good, documentary muckraker Michael Moore. This town has a twenty percent unemployment rate, and the people there are a cool combination of down-to-earth and politically aware-nothing like the "out of touch" epithet frequently directed at socially conscious types. When you've got twenty percent unemployed, you're in touch, big time. We also heard some groovin' improv poetry on the streets of this funky and friendly factory town. After a set at the legendary Ark in Ann Arbor, we dashed over to Boston for a show with Chris and Meredith Thompson at the equally legendary Club Passim in Harvard Square. Then it was down to NJ for a gig at the Hillside Cafi, then an album release gig in the Village for Eric Andersen's new CD, "The Street Was Always There" (Pete played guitar on the album), a live set with Eric on WFUV in the Bronx, a double bill with the Bedsit Poets in Brooklyn, a one-song set at the Knitting Factory in downtown Manhattan (the song was "How Deep is Your Love", and it was our tenth anniversary!), our official anniversary gig at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY, and finally a much needed day off in Woodstock for some r&r and a battery recharge for November, another, you guessed it, busy month! "If your hobby is your source of income, then there's no such thing as work, and no such thing as getting tired." -- Joseph Campbell, "An Open Life" We'll update you next month with our tale of Election Day activism. Four years into a Bush Presidency and... - - Roe v Wade is still the law of the land - - The water is still safe to drink - - The air is still breathable - - Food Stamps, Welfare, and the EITC all still exist - - Homeless people are not dying the streets - - we are all still free to practice the Christian or non-Christian religion of our choice - -gays can still walk the streets without fear of government persecution (note to anybody that might be confused - these are all good things) The fact is Bush has been one of the least conservative "conservative" Presidents in history. He has used the veto exactly zero times in 4 years, essentially letting Congress spend however much they want on whatever they want. He imposed steel tariffs in a misguided effort to protect the American steel industry (and buy votes in the Rust Belt). He has failed to streamline and reduce government as promised in 2000. A a conservative, he is a complete and total disappointment. The really sad thing to me is that in a country of 220 million people, the choice for President came down to John Kerry or Bush. That's the best we can do? Two sons of privilege with almost identical educational backgrounds, neither of whom have ever had a real job in their life. (Kerry's time on active military duty excepted). And I know both liberals and conservatives are loathe to admit it, but when you look closely, the real differences in the candidates were relatively minor. The rhetoric is extreme, but at the end of the day, America after 4 years with President Kerry would look almost exactly the same as America after 4 more years of President Bush. Bush lost the popular vote and probably the electorial vote, too; you would think that he would tread softly. Yet even with this precarious 'victory,' in his first four years, he started a preemptive war and destroyed the economy. As much as I am loathe to admit it, he won fair and square this time around (without delving into Diebold conspiracies), and he now feels like he has the Mandate of the People. And an even more strongly Republican Senate and House to back him up. And less to lose, since he will not be running again. (Although apparently it doesn't matter what he does; if gay marriage is an issue on the ballot, the conservative Christians will crawl out of the woodwork to support him.) I'll be honest; I'm scared. On the other hand, I am young yet; I freely admit that I have no perspective. It just hurts to lose what I have been told -- by The Kennedys, nonetheless -- is the most important election of my lifetime, when it is my FIRST election, and I have personally put so much of myself into it. One of my favourite things about The Kennedys' persona is that they are both genuinely positive without being naive. That seems so important right now. Take a look at the red/blue county-results map in USA Today, and you will see just how extensive President Bush's support is! The American people have spoken, and loudly, with the Presidential results and the widened majority in the Senate and House. As one of the older participants, I'm sure, on this group, let me encourage the young, first-time voters to continue your interest and involvement, on whichever side of the political spectrum you choose. After 30+ years of voting, it's clear to me...EVERY election is important! There will be many more...we all win some and lose some...and tomorrow always comes! It would have been great theater to watch the Republicans claim the White House was stolen, and the Democrats insist that popular vote doesn't matter. It would have been horrible for the country, but it would have been great theater :) That said, I do think John Kerry showed a lot of class by not turning this into a circus of lawsuits. If it's any consolation, 2nd term Presidents don't have a good track record in recent years. Reagan had Iran-Contra and Clinton had the Bimbo Eruption. So, who knows,,,you may get to say "I told you so" at some point in the next 4 years. And echoing what Frank said, don't let the short term disappointment sour you on the system. The real genius of the system our Founding Fathers gave us is that is very near impossible for one person to do much lasting damage to the country. When Clinton was elected the Christian right reacted in much the same way the left is today. They were convinced that Clinton was going to Hell and would take to the whole country with him. Looking back on it, America had a pretty good run when Clinton is President.
