But the real cold weather was still a season away, and the crowd at the Owen Sound Summerfolk Festival was getting serious about partying and digging some roots and folk music. It was a weekend of jamming, and we put together some memorable impromptu bands with Nerissa and Katryna Nields, David Jacobs-Strain, Canadian string wizard Ken Whiteley, and flamenco maestro Andre Thibault. We got together with the Nields for a stompin', swingin', Beatle fest that brought a taste of Falcon Ridge to the Ontario hills, and we wound up the weekend jamming on "Let it Rock", "Didn't It Rain", and "Not Fade Away" with the Waybacks, while a few thousand revelers danced in the aisles. They sure know how to have a good time up north of the borderb& Driving across the province to our border crossing, we were heading through Toronto in the dark of night when a couple of familiar voices came on the radio: Steve Earle and his buddy Bobby Muller (of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation). They were talkin' politics and spinnin' sides, including CCR's prophetic "Fortunate Son" (some folks are born, silver spoon in handb&). It seems that Steve has a weekly radio show on Air America, broadcast on SIRIUS Satellite, Sunday nights. Sure was nice to hear a friendly voice on the long haul all night drive. The month came to a blissful climax on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, where we taught guitar and harmony singing to an enthusiastic bunch of grownup folk aficionados. In this music-driven Utopia, we spent the mornings getting inspired and trying to do a little inspiring ourselves. The afternoons were spent lolling around on a raft a hundred yards out in the lake, and the evenings melted away in endless jamming and singing. It really doesn't get any better, and our spirits were fully recharged when, a few days later, we hit the streets of New York City, standing in solidarity outside Madison Square Garden with a few hundred thousand peace-nicks, constitution-lovers, and American dreamers as we raised our voices together in song one more time: We shall overcome We shall overcome We shall overcome someday Oh, deep in our hearts, I do believe That we shall overcome someday ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' September touring schedule: Friday, 9/10 - Barcroft Community Coffeehouse, 800 S. As for the presidential winner in '04, I can only hope that we can "overcome," together, as a people, this year, and change the administration in the White House. It's possible we *won't* "overcome," this year. Changing the world for the better takes so much more than just casting a vote or winning an election. But it's one thing that we can do to make a difference.
