The ending has been dusted off a bit. There was actually a very extended and interesting discussion on the Nook of TK and how they affect many of us. === Forwarded message ==== >> TK discussed the easy people intepretations to the whole group at the GFP >> when they came up Thursday afternoon - it was actually a pretty interesting >> discussion on the differences between the tN and TK versions. > >That does sound interesting. Maybe someone could shed some light on >the conversation for those of us who weren't there? I'm working with the notes I jotted down to aid my memory. My current notebook includes jottings from every TN, TK, Gandalf, Cadence, and Tracy show I've seen going back to TK Friday night set at FRFF '02. At TK's GFP set, they played their new song "9th Street Billy," about the Tibetan "king of East Side soul" who they know from living in the East Village. They decided in view of Dave Carter's death that they are going to try to write songs about living "satgurus" they know while they are still alive, and 9th Street Billy impressed them as one of those "living gurus" who they know. "9th Street Billy" sounds like a jazz song -- TK bring a lot of different influences into their music -- like bluegrass ("Rappahannock"), country swing ("Orange Blossom Special"), blues ("Come Into My Kitchen"), Irish music ("Anna & the Magic Gown"), Richard Thompson, the Beatles, etc. As an aside, if you don't like a Kennedys song when you're hearing them play, wait 5 minutes, they might play something else that is more to your liking. :-) Someone, maybe Jeff from Charlotte (?), said something to the effect that "9th Street Billy" sounded like it had "always been there," what I would call in my own parlance an "instant classic." It didn't sound like a Kennedys song, and yet it was. (I felt the same way when N&K debuted "Haven't Got a Thing" 1/12/01 at Club Helsinki -- I erroneously assumed at once that they were playing a cover of some twangy old chestnut). P&M said that when they write songs, they hope to achieve that kind of "instant recognition," where a song sort of "clicks." As an aside, it can be thought of maybe as a "deja vu" experience, when you hear a song for the first time and it somehow connects right away, like "remembering the future." I felt that way the first time TK played "Stand" (during soundcheck in Ellsworth ME) -- I just knew it was an "instant classic" destined for great things. P&M confessed that they hope to write a song about Dave Carter, as another living guru who has deeply impressed them, although they said it's still just in the planning stages and the song hasn't actually been written yet. Another aside: Cone's boot of the Hightstown TK - Dave & Tracy show of some years back has Pete almost falling over himself with admiration for the song "When I Go," which was almost brand-new to TK at that time. TK said Saturday night at PACE that they put "When I Go" last on their latest album, because they felt that no other song could follow that one. The conversation somehow got shifted from the "instant classic" syndrome of "9th Street Billy" to covering Dave Carter. It might've been something along the lines that "When I Go" got deep into TK, so that when they played it, it became a Kennedys song, since it had become part of who they were. IOW, they deeply identified with "When I Go" and with Dave's influence generally. I brought up the parallel case of TK's version of "Easy People," which is so very much in the style of TK and different from the somewhat moodier Nields version. TK version is bouncier, more lighthearted-sounding. Pete said that they were really impressed with the line "Why can't I be easy like you," but that they decided to do the song in a way that more nearly fit "who they are." P&M said that the genesis of TK playing "Easy People" went back to a real-life scene at TN's house, when they were literally sitting around the table, drinking a bottle of wine, with David, Nerissa, and Katryna -- and the song became a really real reality for TK from that point on. It became a song that they really wanted to play, because it expressed something about themselves so very well. TK play "Easy People" because they really believe in the song, and they always give Nerissa a very generous tribute every time they play it -- often likening her to another Valley poet, Emily Dickinson. In fact, TK made the Emily Dickinson - Nerissa analogy at PACE Saturday night, with NN present right there in the front row of the audience. So I thought that that was really neat. Those utopian weekends of music and, in Scott Alarik's term, "deep community", make us wonder why the vibe couldn't spread the same way fear spreads, if only given the same amount of attention in popular discourseb&it's been a long time since hope was hip, but that tide might have turned in Boston. Springsteen, the Dixie Chicks, R.E.M., and a bunch of other smart rockers will be hitting the road this fall in the role of Luke Skywalkers versus the Darth Vaders of the neocon cartel. Support them. Not only will you get a great night of music, but you will make an investment in the restoration of democracy. The statue of Liberty is open again, so come November, let's make that shining torch really mean something to the masses who are still huddled in Sudan and elsewhere around the world, not to mention those of us right here who don't belong to the exclusive club of "haves and have-mores". This year, the music matters. Quaint words like peace, love and compassion matter. These simple truths have resonated in our collective hearts for millennia, and this year those chimes of freedom are ringing louder than ever. Hear them? The sound is getting closer everyday. Vote. Do more than that. Campaign. And talk to your neighbors and co-workers. The veil of fear is lifting, and hope is on the way. Namaste. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' August touring schedule: Thursday, August 5 - Aerie Coffeehouse, Rte 42 North, Eagles Mere, PA. 570-525-3855.
