Addabbo responds, "I Like Norah Jones. I like some of what I hear on the radio. What's that band who did "Drops of Jupiter?" Train! I think that's a great song. You know who else I like is The Kennedys. Every time I hear them I think, "They don't need a producer, but I wish they'd call me!" Because what they do is awfully good. I think they make good records." We all agree! Our first month back home since February, and a chance to get into the Living Room, our base in New York, and break in some of the new songs we started writing up on the Colorado front range in May. It looks like "Namaste," "9th Street Billy," "Midnight Ghost," "Noah," and "Half a Million Miles," have all earned permanent tenure on the set list. We love having new songs, and with the addition of Lennon and McCartney's "And Your Bird Can Sing" and Richard Thompson's "How Will I Ever Be Simple Again," almost half of the show is fresh material. Fun, fun, fun, as the Beach Boys used to harmoniously intone. The most moving experience of the month was attending the first American theater screening, at midnight Tuesday, just a few days before the national release, of "Fahrenheit 9/11." Has anyone told you that it's a Michael Moore Bush-bashing ego trip? The odd thing is that few of the people who are saying that have actually seen the film. Some people are afraid to see it, and in fact it does hold up an unflinching mirror for all of us. The truth is, when you come out, you won't feel like bashing anybody. You'll feel like hugging the first person you see, with tears in your eyes. When we walked out on to the street, TV cameras were searching our faces for some kind of reaction--we were the first crowd to see the film. But most of us turned away. We weren't looking for a camera op. We were all lost in thought and feeling. Had we, in some kind of frightened silence, been somehow complicit in some of the things we saw in the film? Should we have called out in a louder voice for some kind of statesmanship, some kind of truth, something that could have prevented the violence? Should we have all, in one voice, demanded an all-out effort for peace before a Pandora's box of violence was flung open? Along with this feeling of shared responsibility, though, comes a tremendous feeling of empowerment. As Levon Helm once sang, "We can talk about it now." The film somehow lifts a veil silence that fell over us in the frightening days after 9/11. After seeing the movie, opposing political camps seem trivial, democracy and human rights seem huge. As for ourselves, we felt a tremendous sense of compassion toward our friends who think of themselves as "Republican" or "Conservative." Their distinguished history seems to have been hijacked, and, although it will be a wrenching experience for some, they are the ones who will feel the strongest shift when they see this movie. Those are the people to take along with you, not to "convert" them or try to make them vote a certain way, but to give them the chance to see what has been done in their name. Ultimately, we're all the political children of Jefferson, Paine, Franklin, and Washington. They are the ones who risked everything for a vision of democracy--rule by the people, and a hope for world peace for their descendants--us. We need to take that stewardship as a sacred responsibility this year. In other words, VOTE. And see the film. To paraphrase one of it's main characters, "It's a uniter, not a divider." ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' July touring schedule: Friday, July 2 - South Street Seaport, Pier 17, New York, NY. 6:00 pm show: The Kennedys at 6pm, The Frames (recently voted Ireland's best rock band) following.
