Here at ten thousand feet, we're well into the clouds, and close to the timberline. The peak to peak road snakes along the ceiling of the front range, from Estes Park south to Nederland. At the base of Long's Peak, which rises another two thousand feet above this high meadow, we take a break from the rockslides and switchbacks. Yesterday the thermometer hit eighty, and we napped like puppies on the rocks by the Big Thompson River, but today we woke up to a foot of snow, the lazy flakes as big as saucers. A herd of elk run in silent slow motion as the van pulls off onto the gravel. We're probably the first car to come across the pass this morning. The elk have come down from the timberline to find new grass in these meadows, and the snow took them by surprise, too. We'll make it to the gig in Nederland tonight, slipping and sliding on dirt roads turned slick by the spring meltoff in this, the mud season. It's a far cry from last month, when our main challenge was making sure we had sunblock in Key West. But in the long run and this is the long run, a Rocky Mountain pass is simply wild and beautiful, and so is a coral reef. They both induce a sense of awesome reverence for the timeless, the hushed quiet that one feels walking into a cathedral built long ago by powers that we don't understand. A glittering school of sergeant majors in the reef whispers the same message as the slow motion elk. This is real. This is timeless. The snow will fall on the front range, and the Sun will glint down on the reef. It's the same message that Basho got long ago when he wrote his haikus in the foothills of Mount Fuji. Conquerors will come and go. Dictators will rise, and their hubris will eventually bring them down. Nations will cycle through exuberance, struggle, and collective celebration, dread, and guilt. But the snow will still fall, and the elk will come down to find the early grass. The tour will take us to Loveland, and down to Albuquerque, then across the Mojave to tarnished Las Vegas and glittering Santa Barbara, but we carry with us a sense of something lasting, a message heard in a quiet voice audible only in the silence of the last snow of spring, at ten thousand feet. This is real. ******************************************* 2) Kennedys' June touring schedule: We return to the East coast after several months of touring around the nation, with a weekly residency at New York's Living Room. This magazine is filled with incredible articles, beautiful color artwork (including posters), and even a CD filled with written-to-order songs. This issue's musical theme: songs from the "missed connections" page of the online classified ad site, Craigslist. Our song, "Jesus on 2nd Avenue", was written about a classified ad posted by someone who claimed to have seen Jesus buying a falafel in Greenwich Village. This song is not on any of our CDs, so pick up a copy of Esopus, or visit them online at www.esopusmag.com. ******************************************* 6) KENNEDYS on the radio and TV The Kennedys song, "Life Is Large" can be heard in the Travel Channel's series, "Road Trip".
