We held still, swaying gently with the tide as it crept seaward over Dry Rocks Reef, seven miles offshore east of Key Largo. The predator's teeth looked like icicles hanging from his downturned jaws. This was his turf. Our clumsy flapping carried us slowly and noisily over the sandpits and coral heads, but if he chose, he could move like quicksilver. We backed off slowly, trying to be as silent as the yellowtails and parrot fish. The Barracuda knew we were there, but he wasn't threatened by us at all. There was no reason to rouse himself from his mid-afternoon nap in the glinting sunlight. The next afternoon we were lazing around the "playground", a mile-square patch of the Gulf of Mexico where half a dozen pods of wild dolphins live as friends and neighbors. The young ones practiced hunting moves, while the older family members sunned themselves and frolicked in the water. It's a good life at the top of the local food chain. It's a good life on the road, as well. We've been touring the southeast all month, discovering great venues like the Main Street Cafi in Homestead Florida, The Evening Muse in Charlotte North Carolina, and Midnight Music Cafi in Birmingham Alabama. Throw in stops at Auburn University and some of our favorite haunts like Jammin' Java and Andy's, and a couple of dates with our New York City pals, Girlyman (at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta and the 6 String Cafi in Cary, North Carolina), and you've got a great tour. Some days you hang with the dolphins, other days you bump up against the barracuda, but it's all part of life on the road. Next month we head west in our brand new Scion XB (equipped with Sirius Satellite radio, of course, tuned to Channel 38: Folktown) for our second cross country odyssey of the year. ******************************************* 2) KENNEDYS TO HOST A WEEKLY FOLK SHOW ON SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO! ******************************************* Our weekly contemporary Folk radio show, tentatively called "The Dharma Cafe" will begin airing Saturdays starting in Mid April.
