Palm trees are swaying. Around a candlelit courtyard, music is emanating out into the darkness from every direction. In room 3500, Tracy Grammer is wrapping up a great version of "Happy Town." In room 3510, the Lee Brothers sacred steel band is getting ready to rock the house. Out in the courtyard, Arlo Guthrie and a ragtag band of gypsies are jamming on some bluegrass standards. The sound of an old time fiddle comes wafting on the jasmine-scented breeze, and in an upstairs room, the door is flung open to accommodate a crowd of folks harmonizing along with us, Vance Gilbert, Ellis Paul, Stacey Earle and Mark Stewart, and a bunch of friends, new and old, on the final chorus of "Stand." Southern California in February seems a little bit like cheating. As we write this, we're sitting on the sand at Laguna Beach, watching surfers and dolphins ride the waves, armed with a cup of hot coffee to take the edge off the morning chill, and Miles Davis playing a muted trumpet on the iPod. It's a long way from the slushy sidewalks of home, but we're spending the better part of this crucial American year as Dharma Bums in the tradition of Kurault and Kerouac. No planes; we'll be traveling overland back and forth across the nation, talking with people and taking their pulse as a population. The train ride across country to the coast was a blissful time of reading, relaxing, and most of all, talking with our fellow passengers, and we have a sense that apathy is out. Everyone in the country seems to feel a strong drive to be fully engaged in the culture, the politics, the big issues and the smaller squabbles. We've spent hours in the observation car, exchanging ideas with conservatives, liberals, and every shade in between, on war and peace, politics, religion, farms, novels, Dylan and DaVinci, and we return to New York City filled with the stuff of America. It's still a land of dreams, of hope, and out here on the open rails away from TV, with the sun rising over the red rock canyons, the fear disappears and the energy of wishing takes over. It feels like a watershed year. ******************************************* 2) KENNEDYS TO HOST A WEEKLY FOLK SHOW ON SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO! ******************************************* At the invitation of New York radio legend Meg Griffin, we will be hosting a new show on Saturdays (10:00am - 4:00pm) on Sirius Satellite radio, channel 38: Folktown. The emphasis will be on contemporary writers and performers, but we will also draw connections to the roots of today's rich music scene. This new opportunity combines our love of music with our continuing interest in cutting edge communication technology. Satellite radio, along with listener-supported public radio, is the true frontier of creativity and programming freedom that provides a real and refreshing alternative to the narrow cast and often confining world of commercial radio. To find out more about this new technology and the exciting musical dimensions that it makes possible, visit Sirius Satellite Radio's website at www.sirius.com And don't forget to keep supporting public radio. Our friends at public radio stations across the country are essential to the survival of homegrown music and we listeners are essential to the survival of non-corporate radio, so it's a symbiotic relationship to which we all contribute and from which we all benefit. So keep supporting maverick radio, and further enrich your musical life with the incredible palette offered by Sirius Satellite radio! ******************************************* 3) KENNEDYS MARCH TOURING SCHEDULE: ******************************************* Friday, March 5, 2004 - Godfrey Daniel's, 7 East 4th Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015, with opening act, Dave's True Story. We were honored to play alongside the Indigo Girls, Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Julian. This week, stations across America will repeat this show, in which we sing a number of our songs, some with backup by the Mountain Stage band, and with guest vocals by Lucy Kaplansky and others. We also participated in the end finale of "My Back Pages" by Bob Dylan. Log onto http://www.MountainStage.com to find stations in your area that will run this show, along with corresponding air times. If you can't find a station in your area, many of the stations that run Mountain Stage also stream radio online (for example WFUV in New York, or WUMB in Boston). We taped Roz and Howard Larman's Folkscene radio show while in Los Angeles last month. Check out www.folkscene.com to find out when it will air, and to see a list of syndicating stations, or to stream via the web. Visit our web page periodically for radio station visit updates. Now that radio stations have the new CD, call and request to hear a track!
