IN THIS ISSUE: 1) "Stand" 2) Update on The Bottom Line 3) Kennedys October touring schedule 4) Mercantile 5) Find radio station in your area that plays The Kennedys music 1) STAND September 23 marks the Autumnal Equinox, the traditional feast of Mabon. It's the time for bringing in the second harvest, a time for considering the inevitability of change, as Nature works through her endless cycles. It's also a date of musical significance. Two bona fide geniuses, Ray Charles and John Coltrane, were born on this date. In addition, two musical shamans who may someday be placed in that same category, Ani DiFranco and Bruce Springsteen, share this same auspicious birthday. And so it is with pleasure that we announce the release of "Stand" on September 23rd. Coltrane once said, in an interview, "All I want to be is a force for good." We transferred this sentiment to the lead character in our opening song, "Dharma Cafi." The young woman in the song discovers herself, and her own goddess nature, at the local open mic. night. The rest of the album continues to work these basic themes: spiritual questing, and figuring out how to be a force for good amid the wrenching social changes that are occurring, seemingly outside the realms of cyclical Nature or ethical human fellowship. If no one wants war, fundamentalist intolerance, and the breakdown of democracy and liberty, then why do these things seem to be happening anyway? These questions are large, too large to be answered in three minute songs, even if songwriters knew the answers. But songs still serve a purpose. A song can still act as a rallying cry, or a quiet call in the dark. It might still bring a few minutes of solace, even as it raises more questions than it answers. Most of all, a song can encourage us to believe, and even to act, without fear, or at least with less fear. This is what "Stand" is all about: following our own quests like the Grail knights, who trekked into the deep forest rather than take the well trodden paths. On that quest, a song isn't a roadmap, but it might serve as a lantern (or at least a flashlight in a blackout). As William Carlo Williams said, "You can't get the news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is there." So, take a few minutes from watching the news to listen to this batch of songs. We don't make false claims to being "fair and balanced." We are who we are, and the characters on this album celebrate the miracle of being who they are. So celebrate with us. A pilgrimage is less lonely than a quest, so pilgrim, be strong, and if you hear a song risin' up, can we walk together on the winding road, up to the rising sun? NYU is trying to evict the club from the room they've been using for 30 years. Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, The Roaches, Bob Marley, Nanci Griffith, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Patti Smith, Warren Zevon, Tom Waits, Janis Ian and Doc Watson, among others, have played The Bottom Line frequently over the years. So have we, and we'd hate to see it go. You can help by keeping the pressure on NYU to keep the Bottom Line! Please visit http://www.bottomlinecabaret.com to find out how you can help. 3) KENNEDYS TOURING SCHEDULE: Late addition to the schedule! After Isabel I was without power for 8 days. I was in good company, hundreds of thousands of homes didn't have power for that long, and some of my neighbors just across the street will be without for another 4 days. I still don't have phone or cable modem (I'm sending this from work). But, I have my house, my car and my life and not everyone in Virginia can say that. So, last week, I called Plan 9 and they had 2 copies and put my name on one. I went down there and THEY had no power, but a generator for fans and credit card readers. It was eerie walking into that big dark store to get my cd. And when I slipped the cd into my player all of the sudden I had power. Stand is a powerful cd. Especially the title track (which is playing as I type this). Allah, Buddha, Yahweh, Jesus, Brahma People get ready there's a train that's coming Many different legends, just one story All aboard the train that's bound for glory Powerful words and dangerous words. I imagine The Kennedys will take flack for this song. From people who believe THEIRS is the only legend, to people who don't think they should be talking about religion at all, to people who don't like it that their legend was left out of the song. But, there are those of us who believe they should sing this song at the top of their lungs! I heard all of these songs on a wonderful night at Andy's last February. I thought I knew what my favorites would be. (Stand, Easy People, Dharma Cafe, When I Go). But, surprise! There are additional favorites as well: Pilgrim, Raindrop, Dance Around In The Rain are others. What a wonderful CD and what a perfect time to come into my life. don Don Semmens donsem@comcast.net Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V5 #70 *********************************
