River of Fallen Stars E: Sirens --> I Feel Fine --> Last Train to Clarksville --> Eight Days A Week --> She Loves You --> Purple Haze --> I Saw her Standing There Luke and Daniel Brindley, the proprietors of Jammin' Java, opened with a short acoustic set of original songs, ending with an instrumental, "Dervish," which as you might guess was a Turkish-sounding open tuning song. It featured Luke on the djembe, on which he showed some real talent. They performed original songs from Daniel's forthcoming CD, singing harmony and both playing guitar. This was the Washington-area CD Release Party for Stand, so Pete and Maura played practically the entire disc live for the first set. The only song missing was Don't Hold Your Breath. They barely paused and didn't really talk between songs, keeping us rocking for a solid 40 minutes or so. They did introduce Easy People and When I Go, though. The second set was all by request, hence the improbable coupling of Rappahannock/Mystery/Angels Cry/Come Into My Kitchen as a medley, performed only as The Kennedys could. Jesse was dedicated to a girl celebrating her sixth birthday, so the refrain was modified to "Ca---itlyn." There was a lot of energy in the room, which was practically full. I should explain the songs listed as running together with Sirens: Pete played snippets of I Feel Fine and Last Train to Clarksville before he and Maura dove into the final medley of Beatles songs. All in all, it was a wonderful evening. It's been an inspiration, judging by the 10 new songs on their seventh disc, issued on a new label for the husband-and-wife songwriters. Light, breezy pop tunes such as "Dharma Cafe" and "Raindrop" are juxtaposed against powerful, darker songs with images of war. The result, in the balance, is an entertaining disc that suitably spotlights Mr. Kennedy's world-class guitar playing and Mrs. Kennedy's lithe singing. The title track urges listeners to "Come on and stand, plant your sword in the sand," and in "Ashes and Sand," the lyric asks, plainly, "how you gonna wash away the blood from your hands?" Three songs have references to pilgrims. One, titled "Pilgrim," refers to tanks "rolling through the land of milk and honey." But the Kennedys leave politics aside with their covers of Nerissa Nields' "Easy People," long a concert favorite for the duo, and a well-crafted version of the late Dave Carter's "When I Go," a hauntingly spiritual song. "Anna and the Magic Gown" is a fable that sounds like a quick-step traditional song, "Tupelo" is country-tinged pop and "Dance Around in the Rain" is a love song with New York imagery. Clearly, the Kennedys have found that life in the Big Apple agrees with them. - - J.V. In a message dated 9/25/2003 10:16:02 PM Eastern Daylight Time, WoodellDC@aol.com writes: "Stand" was the only one I didn't find on my pilgrimage to Borders yesterday I will admit I don't know a thing about record company distribution, but I wonder if their new label, Koch, is doing The Kennedys justice in getting the new album out there? Or could it be the music stores themselves that are the problem? For the last few albums, I've always been able to find a copy or two on the first day at Best Buy or Barnes & Noble. For "Stand" I had to really let my fingers do the walking. Called various branches of the aforementioned chains, none of which had any coming in for the day of release. Borders said they were getting two copies, and I finally located one at a nearby Virgin Megastore ("mega" means mega prices in addition to mega selection, I think. But at least they had it!) Anyone else struggling to locate "Stand"? I guess next time I'll order a new release directly from The Kennedys. Anyway, "Stand" is well worth the effort to find! Ashes and Sand >3. Tupelo >4. Dance Around in the Rain >5. Miracle Mile >6. Pilgrim >7. Raindrop It was a rare Kennedys experience, indeed, to hear 6 unfamiliar songs in a row. I find that listening to unfamiliar songs requires me to listen harder, so this was pretty intense, in a quite satisfying way. >17. Rappahannock --> Mystery --> Angels Cry --> Come Into My Kitchen Again, the transitions were handled astonishingly gracefully for such a diverse group of tunes, and Pete and Maura seemed to have a lot of fun reading each other. Another highlight of the evening was Pete playing slide guitar, using Dashboard Buddha as a slide. Both musically impressive and absolutely hiliarious. I really really like The Kennedys' strategy of promoting their new album during the first set and playing old favorites during the second. The new songs still get heard and appreciated, but it's kind of painful when bands practically ONLY play new songs right after the album comes out (::coughcoughLove&Chinacoughcough::), and seeing the same set several times is rather boring. It's good promotion, but people are also there to hear the tunes that they know and love, and TK walk that line very nicely. That said, everyone should go get "Stand" right now. It rocks. ~RD Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2003 14:50:42 -0400 (EDT) From: "katie stohlmann" Subject: RE: [JP] Is i couldn't find stand at the santa rosa borders the other day. i haven't looked anywhere else. someday i will go to the last record store's new location but that might be a long time coming. when i do go, i shall check. we have stand at krcb. it's very exciting. k Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V5 #69 *********************************
