Somewhere around 100 people showed up, resulting in, as Pete aptly put it, a coffeehouse-sized crowd spread out over a folk-festival-sized field, which I found bizarrely diluted. I didn't see any familiar janglepoet faces, but I'm sure that you were out there. (If you were there, I was the girl in the violet wings.) Still, the weather held out for the most part, the two umbrellas that Maura tossed into the audience sat in the grass unused, and The Kennedys put on an altogether excellent concert, complete with jangly melodies, mad guitar solos, a handful of rarely-played songs, covers ranging from Dylan to Buddy Holly to Richard Thompson to McGuinn/Clark to Nerissa Nields, and a bit of subversive politics to boot. Jesse Easy People Chelsea Embankment (with jamming) One Heart, One Soul Stand This Land is Your Land The political commentary with respect to Max Ochs was subversive but definitely present. While he was not mentioned by name until the end, The Kennedys flirted with fire several times. When the sound guy accidentally pulled the plug, they made a crack about how they better be careful or he'd pull the plug on purpose. In the intro to WWW, they commented on how they might not have much time left to make fun of Winona, because she might be getting a political office soon. In the intro to JLHD, Pete talked about what a wonderful thing reading was, because it made kids have words in their heads, which formed into ideas and opinions, and how then you didn't need a teleprompter. Commenting on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, a dig was made contrasting America's principles to Europe, where 'If you made fun of a political leader, you could get arrested or lose your job,' and it was a good thing that America got beyond that. The most overt commentary, however, was during "This Land is Your Land," which they said was requested by Woody's sister. At the end, they added a verse directly about Max Ochs, which got a cheer out of the audience. The plug was, needless to say, not pulled on them. Definitely the highlight of the show (and not just because a couple of us were on stage at the time): it was a clearly a victory. Plus, there were bubbles! ~Rebecca "But I will I will I will beg to differ with you" (Patty Larkin) _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 2003 23:39:41 EDT From: Rozettj@aol.com Subject: [JP] WA9 Show WA9 played Caffe Lena tonight - as headliners! The place was full; brian said it was the largest audience (except FR, of course) they have ever had, and the audience was wildly enthusiastic. Kate McDonnell was also there to cheer them on, showing Baltimore solidarity. Which brings up a point...if you have not yet sent in your FR evaluation from, download one from the FR site. We need to write in WA9 as an act we want back, and a vote for Kate, if you are so inclined - which means, if you have good taste :-), for most wanted. her song "Mercy" kicked butt. tj Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Aug 2003 10:51:01 -0500 From: Shannon Clouser Subject: [JP] Honey, I'm home!
