This just in...The Kennedys play New York City's "Bottom Line" with Caitlin Cary (formerly of Whiskeytown), Wednesday, August 13th! See below for details! IN THIS ISSUE: 1) July Road Diary 2) Update on "Stand" CD release 3) Kennedys August touring schedule 4) Find radio station in your area that plays The Kennedys music 5) Mercantile 1) JULY ROAD DIARY The first of August has been, since ancient times, the feast of the "first harvest"; the beginning of the end of summer, and a time to look back on the activity of the previous weeks, when the sun was at the height of it's power and the planet seems filled with potential and life force. This July was a great one. We started the festivities way out at Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland, kicking out the folk-rock jams on the Little Yough River for the fourth, the day when the coo coo finally says coo coo (see "Angel Fire," cut 2). From there we traveled to Berlin, Maryland for a concert at the Globe Theatre and Gallery. Next morning, we hit the surf shop for body boards, and started slowly bumming our way up the coast. We hit Rehoboth Beach, Cape May, Wildwood, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Point Pleasant and Asbury Park in search of our perfect wave. Actually, we found it at the Splash Zone water park on the Wildwood boardwalk, but that doesn't really count, does it? While we sat on a deck looking out at the ocean at Point Pleasant, two dolphins broke the water just offshore, and continued north, leaping and indisputably frolicking (no other word seems to fit) in their own version of bumming up the coast. Eventually, after a quick stop at home in New York, we found ourselves in central New Hampshire, holed up in a little cabin on the shore of Lake Winnepesaukee, where we taught guitar and songwriting to a bunch of adults at the WUMB Summer Acoustic Music Week. Incredibly rewarding experience. People who love music the way we all do, everyone vibing on the rich rewards that come from immersing yourself in the things you love the most: those of us who taught came away on the same high that the students felt. We spent the afternoons on a raft out on the waters of the loon refuge (a different kind of loon from the ones we hang out with here in the East Village), just followin' the bliss. From there, we took the back roads through Vermont over to Lake George in the Adirondacks, where we holed up again, this time rehearsing for the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. We observed the first anniversary of our friend Dave Carter's death on the 19th by watching Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth," a rich source of insight that has guided us through the experience of saying "catch up with ya later" to Dave. We spent the week focusing on Falcon Ridge, and on the underlying message in our music: that is, you don't have to agree with what we believe in, you just have to be yourself and stand your ground, and don't you let nobody turn you round. The festival itself was another unforgettable experience. We feel more and more that the audience and performers on that hillside are our extended family, and we draw closer to them all the time. Wherever we travel, and we travel a lot, we always feel that we're coming home when we walk across the footbridge to Brennan's farm. The gospel workshop, the kid's stage, "study war no more," the Beatle jam: so many moments that we'll always remember, especially when we're driving across Texas at 2 a.m. on a lonely stretch of road. There's a reason why we do this. A good one. In following our own tambourine man down whatever roads he may lead, we hope to empower anybody who feels a resonance from our songs to do the same: follow their own bliss down whatever lonely roads it might lead. Is th ere a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow? Dunno. Have to ask Dave Carter about that. But, like they say, it's all in the journey..and that's what July was all about for us. Peace. 2) UPDATE ON "STAND" CD RELEASE! We told you in last month's newsletter that the release date -- Sept 23 -- of "Stand" is significant for the musical birthdays that fall on that date (Ani DiFranco, Bruce Springsteen, and John Coltrane). Did you also know that September 23 is the Autumnal Equinox, a time when nights grow longer than days...the season of the ripening of the harvest?
