Life is Large Shaking Hands The Creature Was a Teacher Some Kids Half of Us Air Guitar Maura Be Good Love Train Twist & Shout Life is Large TK were able to coax audience participation out of the kiddies for almost every song. More fun (if possible) than most adult-oriented Kennedys shows! A real treat. Who would've thought that Pete & Maura were so good with the kids (and their moms and dads and grandparents). Young or old, TK know how to work a crowd. Fun for all ages! :-) Bruce Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 22:58:15 EDT From: Nieldsforever@aol.com Subject: [JP] "Study War No More" FRFF Workshop Friday 5:00 This "folks for peace" workshop was led by the dean of protest-song singers Tom Paxton, with Holly Near, The Kennedys, Nerissa & Katryna Nields, Lucy Kaplansky, Tracy Grammer, Richard Shindell, Diane Ponzio, and Tim Mason filling out the bill of this crowded workshop stage. TK: Stand, Can't Kill Hope with a Gun N&K: The Sweetness, This Land is Your Land N&K also led the whole ensemble in the workshop finale "Down By the Riverside." Nerissa introduced "The Sweetness" by saying that we can't possibly have peace on earth if we can't even make peace with those closest to us in our own lives. I agree. Peace begins at home. Good comment, Nerissa! :-) Pete made a good comment of his own. He said something to the effect that if there were any young people out there in the audience who didn't remember the 60's, that this workshop was there to subvert them. And this subversion would consist, in effect, of taking the spirit of FRFF home with them, and spreading it around to others. Good one, Pete! If this be treason, then I stand condemned. Now that's what I call "good subversion." :-) Gandalf Murphy even has a tag for this "good subversion" on their album "A Good Thief Tips His Hat" --- the "Silent Revolution." Here was the mainstage lineup for Thursday night: 6:30 The Grapes of Vaudevillian Fantasy 7:30 Kennedys 8:30 Northern Lights with Vassar Clements (and special guest Ben Demerath) 9:40 Patty Larkin 10:40 Richard Thompson Band Here's what TK played: Life is Large Didn't It Rain Get It Right River of Fallen Stars When I Go Easy People Anna & the Magic Gown Orange Blossom medley Stand Sirens w/ Chris & Meredith Thompson (including tips o' the hat to Purple Haze and the Who) Life is Large w/ C&M Thompson It was interesting having TK play the same night as a bluegrass band (Northern Lights with Vassar Clements) and a British folk-rocker (Richard Thompson), because TK's music reflects both influences (Orange Blossom medley and Anna & the Magic Gown respectively). Richard Thompson's set included "Wall of Death" too which TK have both recorded and played a lot. More Kennedys activity at FRFF '03 to follow. There is some repetition from other earlier posts. But this Gandalf-centered post helped me see how the Kennedys' spirit of "Life is Large" fits in with TN's "Easy People," Cadence's "Evolve," and Gandalf Murphy's "Silent Revolution." All 4 are on the same page and basically talking about the same thing. Bruce - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - ------------ GM&TSCOD weren't on the printed program at this year's Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in Hillsdale NY. Last year they made their mark on the mainstage Saturday night, going on before the Dave Carter tribute, EFO, and The Nields. But Gandalf Murphy still managed to leave an indelible impression on this year's festival, just by doing two "stealth sets" that weren't listed in the official program: one at the George Fox Pavillion (upper Nields camp) at 4AM Sunday morning, and the other at 1:45 Sunday afternoon on the midway in front of the Acoustic Live booth. If scarcity = preciousness, then sometimes less can be more too, without contradiction. 4AM Upper Nields Camp set (Joziah solo) Long Gone Lonesome Blues Moving On Circus of Dreams Alligator 1:45PM Midway set (Joziah & Tink duo) Circus of Dreams Everyone Has a Broken Heart Never Fit Seeing Joziah & Tink play those 2 "stealth sets" was the musical highlight of the festival for me. "A Good Thief Tips His Hat." Pete Kennedy explained from the stage of the "Study War No War" workshop that the purpose of the workshop was subversion. A good subversion, a conspiracy of peace: that festival-goers would take the festival spirit of peace and making good music home with them, and spread this same spirit of peaceful subversion to others. Music can be this great force that reaches right into our souls when the fashion guards aren't watching. This is how we can make a difference, every day, starting now. It occurred to me that the Slambovians already have an apt tag for this kind of "good subversion" --- the "Silent Revolution." You could see them turn to each other and roll their eyes. Ugh, their loss! I had a great time seeing TK at a couple spots, including the family stage and -- Yay! -- the Granata Guitars booth, where I actually got up the nerve to ask for a song -- "I'd Run Red Lights for You" -- and was glad to hear them do it! Who else but Pete can play over the back of his head while sitting down? It was a great loooong weekend overall, didn't get to spend too much time in one place, because I wanted to catch up with friends I see only once a year. But it was great to see everyone. I also missed out on some Sat. night/Sun. morn singing, including Happytown, because I was enjoying a very nice conversation with the woman at the campsite next to mine, a "stay-at-home" FRFF mom of a girl of about 9 and a boy of about 2, whose husband worked for one of the vendors. By the time Arlo was finishing up, she was in great desire for a grown-up conversation. I very much enjoyed seeing longtime faves for the first time: Arlo, Richards (Shindell and Thompson), John Gorka, Patty Larkin, Vasser Clements, and also seeing some old faves again, like TK, TN (FBN), Da Vinci's Notebook, and on and on. And I was wowed on Sunday afternoon, singing along with all that great music, at how much I've soaked in within the last 6-7 years. Back then, I didn't even know a lot of these performers, except in name only and maybe a song or two, and now I know the words to so many great songs! I've really onky followed TK for about a year or so. Thanks to all who signed the FRFF shirt I'm giving to my doc so that he will come to FRFF. Apologies to those I missed, but you're there in spirit. And did anyone else see the spectacular falling star Friday night? About half the hillside went "Oooooh!" May all of our wishes come true! Nerissa shone I thought with her deep knowledge of Beatles song lyrics on nearly every song. And of course TK anchored the whole shebang like the pros that they are. I invite your comments. "Groove Stomp & Shout" offers a lot of latitude for what can be played. TK answered the call by playing "Not Fade Away" w/ Eddie on drum in a long jam, and later the Byrds' "8 Miles High," the Beatles' "Rain" as a medley. N&K accompanied by Dave Chalfant did "Mister Right Now" w/ Maura & Eddie, and later "Tomorrowland" (!) -- which has become a rarity. The whole ensemble concluded with "You Are My Sunshine," which N&K had totally down and dead to rights. Maura was just glowing when DaVinci's Notebook broke into the theme from "The Jeffersons." TK have cracked that out too in the past, and Maura knows all the words by heart. There were many impressive performances. TK played "Come In My Kitchen," Orange Blossom medley, and a medley of "Take the A Train," "Pipeline," "Walk Don't Run," and "Wipe Out" w/ house band bassist Mark Dann and chosen-from-the-crowd NY Dave (yes, *that* NY Dave, ItsIDave) on percussion. Stephen & I heard David Jacobs-Strain play at a ridgetop camp next to the Tribes Hill tent one of those nights, and Joe Giacoio was introduced to the GFP by Carla Ulbrich, where he played 2 songs in the dead of night. Guitar god Pete & guitar goddess Maura came up to the GFP Saturday night too for a few minutes, but unfortunately for me and Stephen we had just left to see Tracy Grammer's mainstage set when the two of them arrived. We also unfortunately missed P&M's set at the Granata guitar booth on Sunday, since we had no clue as to when that was coming down until it was too late.
