Subject: [JP] Bruce's Birthday Benediction (BBB)
Well there's already the WWW (World Wide Web), the KKK (Ku Klux Klan), the
AAA Motor Club, and the saying TTT (Things Take Time). So why *not* BBB
(Bruce's Birthday Benediction).
B1. I'm psyched every time I get a Kennedys Monthly Mailer by email. I truly
appreciate the effort that Pete & Maura make to put one of those out every
month, faithfully, without fail. Cadence & the Kennedys both do a Monthly
Newsletter; I can think of a lot of other artists who don't.
In fairness to EFO, they put out a *dandy* of a Monthly Newsletter too. It's
a great way for band and fans to "stay in touch." My hat's off, to Cadence,
the Kennedys, *and* Eddie From Ohio. :-)
B2. I'm psyched about the Kennedys' new album Stand, which is truly going to
be out-Standing in its field. Kennedys channel folk, pop, rock, bluegrass,
country, blues, Irish, and other "roots" influences in a way that no one else
is
doing, and this next album is going to be another priceless gem in the
necklace of Kennedys ear-candy. The kind of necklace you can eat --- simply
delicious. Mmm, good. Savor the sensation.
Oh yeah, I'm psyched to be seeing the Kennedys at Falcon Ridge in a couple of
weeks, too. Isn't it *always* the Summer of Love, deep down in our hearts,
when we really want it to be? I think so. It's *always* the Summer of Love
when the Kennedys are "in the house," rain or shine.
Rain memories. One of my fondest Kennedys "rain memories" was the Allentown
Mayfair show on 5/01 where a solo Nerissa also played. The lightning came.
Nerissa's set was abruptly ended prematurely. It was too bad. But then Pete
&
Maura played one of the most fun, spontaneous sets *ever* --- in the rain ---
under a picnic shelter not far from where TK and Nerissa had just played
their sets. Maybe not as much fun as Cadence & the Kennedys' guerilla folk
music
sets on the midway at FRFF '01. But still. Only a few of TK's most diehard
fans were there for that Kennedys mini-set under the shelter in the rain.
That
was most definitely a Yay for Yay kind of moment. A little bit of sunshine
to help get one through the storm.
Another rain memory. I rendezvous'd with Cone Head-Rex to see TK twice in 2
days in a fateful Appel Farm weekend: TK at the Bridgeton fountain 5/31/02;
N&K Nields and Jackson Browne 6/01 at Appel Farm; and then TK again later
that
night at the Point in Bryn Mawr. Let's try and forget that we were late for
the Point show. Oops. But the "rain memory" involves Pete & Maura's outdoor
free show at Bridgeton the day before. Maybe they didn't do the Beatles'
"Rain," although they might've. "Didn't It Rain"? I'm not sure. "River of
Fallen
Stars"? There were little rainbows laughing and dancing in the rain that
day.
But it was a fantastic set with a lot of rarely played Kennedys oldies
thrown in. Then, with almost the very last chord of Pete & Maura's set still
ringing out, so jangly and clear, the rains came. It was a really magical
part of
a really magical Bruce & Cone weekend. Rain can be really really cool. I
liked that a lot.
B3. This is already too long, but I don't post to the Kennedys list that
often.
I've been thinking a lot about the meaning of "Common Bond" in these troubled
and sometimes troubling times. It's hard to find the connection to the
Common Bond with people who really tick me off on the other end of the
political
spectrum, and with people who just plain make the world a miserable place
sometimes, generally. To uphold the wisdom of the song "Common Bond" is
really
challenging. Sometimes, it means putting up with people who I really don't
care
for that much.
I don't think that Pete & Maura are naive dreamers for having written so many
songs like "Common Bond." I believe in Pete & Maura --- I think they're
showing us the right way. Together, let's do what we can to make this a
better
world. "What's Going On" is right on --- war *is not* the answer. We need
love. Everyone does. Let's try and live our lives as if our commitments
matter.
They do.
Thanks, Pete & Maura, for "Common Bond." And best wishes to everybody
everywhere for a safe 4th of July weekend. Let's celebrate freedom in the
way that
only we can. Robustly. But caringly. LIL, y'all. :-)
Bruce
