Full band Gandalf Murphy Friday night at PACE (Pioneer Arts Center of Easthampton) was part two of my Slambovian trifecta weekend. I had a hellish drive through Friday rush-hour Boston area traffic in the rain, turning the 2.25 hour drive to Easthampton into a 3.25 hour nightmare. Because of that, I had to recover and just plain "veg out" with a cup o' joe on a couch in the lobby of the venue during opener James O'Brien's set. This allowed me the opportunity to grill Sharkey & co. so's I could hear some songs I hadn't heard them play live yet. If you want your voice heard, you gotta speak up. I wrested some major concessions from the band in intense negotiations, yielding both "Good Thief" and "Look Ma No Hands." I hadn't heard either of those played live before. I'm easy people, but I'm hard to satisfy. You know, like that Elvis song, "He's the Devil in Disguise." :-) Then the Full Band played like fiends, or like angels wearing wings, in a 2-set extravaganza of Musical Nirvana that would've made the Dead sit up and take notice. The following set list just gives a ghost of an impression of what it was like actually being there. Better Life Circus of Dreams I Walk the Line Folsom Prison Blues Moving On Sunday in the Rain I Wish Good Thief Genius Fumes Silent Revolution Baby Jane Bike Yodel Look Ma No Hands Call to the Mystic Buddha Alice Never Fit (encore) They rocked the house in a major way. The band got a standing ovation. Peter and Stephenspongebob were both with me for this show. I don't bring the younger one, Peter, to very many shows. Stephen dug the show so much, he was begging me to take him to the NH Gandalf show Saturday night as well. We'll see, I said. The drive to the show had been such bitter wormwood and gall, but after such a magical show, it was all ecstasy and the inner lovelight the whole way home. The Gandalf Murphy vibe isn't just infectious and habit-forming, folks -- it can be mind altering and life changing as well. What a really good trip this is turning out to be. If GM&TSCOD are any indication of the shape of things to come, then this is one Love Train that I don't want to be missing at the station. Stephenspongebob came with me, and the Muse was very much with the Slambovians. Joziah & Sharkey had turned enough heads at this same venue opening as a duo for the Nields back in January, they were asked to come back to the Muse again with the full band, and Saturday's show was it. The crowd was small but enthusiastic, and I'm hoping that the word-of-mouth buzz for Gandalf Murphy will bring more people out to the show next time the band comes back to town. Silent Revolution Sunday in the Rain Moving On Yodel I Wish Genius Baby Jane Circus of Dreams Better Life My Girl Bike Call to the Mystic Long Gone Lonesome Blues (Hank) Buddha (extended version) Alice in Space Never Fit (encore) Joziah, Sharkey, Tony, and Tink were in fine form, making everyone glad they came and leaving the satisfied customers hungry for more. The combination of a very ample repertoire of well-crafted originals, dead-on accurate covers of country classics, impressive musicianship, personal charm, and really inspired and exciting live performances makes Gandalf Murphy a phenomenal talent and a musical force to be reckoned with in the folk scene. There is an immense potential market here in New England just waiting to discover the Slambovians and jump onboard their bandwagon. But these things take time. Long live the Silent Revolution, and may the marketing Force be with them.
