I can't say enough about how much the title track has already influenced my life, for the better. But this post follows a whole 'nother Energizer Bunny down its hole, in search of Wonderland. Namely, Dave Carter, whose song "When I Go" will also be on the new Kennedys album. I often say that I only saw Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer that one time at Appel Farm when N&K Nields were also playing there, on 6/1/02. But technically, this was the only full *set* by the duo I ever saw. In '00 or '01 I was amazed by DC & TG doing "Tanglewood Tree" at the Counterpoint Workshop at Falcon Ridge. I owe Cone Head a great debt for his turning me on to DC & TG in the car during the drives between Appel Farm, Parvin State Park where we camped for 2 nights, The Point in Bryn Mawr to see TK after Jackson Browne's set at Appel Farm, and the Bridgeton Fountain on 5/31 where TK played a free open-air set just before the rains came. This was one of *the* legendary watershed weekends in more ways than one for me. I bought all 3 DC & TG CDs after Dave & Tracy's Appel Farm set, and they've been in heavy rotation ever since. These CDs were played nonstop in the car during our family's Colorado vacation in late June, with the song "The Mountain" especially being the soundtrack for the whole Rocky Mountain High experience. Stephen and I were fervently looking forward to seeing Dave & Tracy at Falcon Ridge at the end of the next month. Little did we know. We were all shocked to hear of Dave's death the week before FRFF '02. I was so stunned I could only play "When I Go" and would not allow myself to play any of their other songs. When I finally broke down and played their 3 albums on the drive to the festival the next week, Stephen will attest that I sobbed the whole drive from Boston to Hillsdale NY. I felt like one of the most amazing people I had ever seen had been taken away, and I didn't even know him well at all. The Dave Carter Tribute on Saturday night was one of the most incredible hours of music ever, and one of the most moving. Tracy received a heartfelt standing ovation from the entire mainstage crowd as she took the stage at the very beginning of the set, still only about a week after Dave's passing, one of the most courageous things I've ever seen from any individual. Pete accompanied Tracy as she sang the opening song --- "The Mountain." Such rapt attention. You could've heard a pin drop. And in the following hour, TK, N&K Nields, EFO, Erin McKeown, Chris & Meredith Thompson, and others did stirring renditions of "When I Go," "Ordinary Town," "Farewell to St. Dolores," "Gentle Arms of Eden," "Tanglewood Tree," etc. Was Chris Smither's version of "Crocodile Man" the most inspired of all? The whole Dave Carter Tribute was magical and unforgettable --- even as Dave Carter himself was magical and unforgettable. I was thrilled when TK added both "When I Go" and "Happytown" to their repertoire, playing both songs extensively at shows. Pete & Maura have this amazing, chameleon-like ability to blend into their settings, making other people's music completely their own. This is definitely true of "Easy People." TK's version of "Easy People" will not only be on the new album, their version has even influenced the way N&K themselves have played the song at shows. If anyone I know deserves to be called "Easy People," it would have to be Pete & Maura Kennedy. Same with TK's version of "Happytown." It almost sounds like Dave Carter wrote it for TK, it fits the Kennedys vibe so perfectly. I would be happy if TK would do "Happytown" at every Kennedys show. It's a perfect fit, Dave's "Kennedys song." I have been very happy too, that Pete & Maura have been tireless in their advocacy for Dave & Tracy, stumping for them whenever they play Dave's songs. TK are not so hung up on themselves that they neglect to give credit where credit is due, whenever they play Dave Carter, Nerissa Nields, or Richard Thompson. Pete & Maura know that they are part of the much bigger music world, part of the world at large, and part of the Folk Process. They are part of all of us now. When you spread the love around, the love comes back to you as well. I wish there were an annual Dave Carter festival just like the one they have in California for Kate Wolf every summer. Kate Wolf was another artist who shared a lot of the same musical influences as Dave, and who had a lot of the same spiritual qualities as Dave too. We live in a world blessed by the likes of them, though both of them were taken from us too soon. From the little I have heard, Dave Carter sounds like one of the most fascinating personalities of our generation. Pete has said that he was the best songwriter "of all of us," referring to the current crop of songwriters, maybe. But apparently Dave lived a surprisingly varied life even before he turned folk troubadour, as mathematician, philosopher, jazz piano player, poet, and whatnot. This is a side of Dave Carter that unfortunately remains hidden to us who did not know him well, and I'm afraid this side of Dave will be lost in the mists of obscurity, even while Dave's music lives on. It is for this reason that I am keen on seeing someone, anyone, do the gruntwork for writing an official life of Dave Carter. May this hope not be in vain. I've spent the past 8 years trying to keep track of Nields History, and I hope that someone will do a Dave Carter History for the enrichment of everyone of us. Because Dave was an enrichment to everyone of us. The more we know, the more we will be able to appreciate the legacy of wonder that he has already bequeathed, in the testimony of his musical career, his life with Tracy, and his songs.
