Probably because even though I know all the songs, I don't know all of the song *titles*. I'm so bad..... Some time thereafter, I went to a Kennedys show at the Turning Point where Cone didn't show. Probably the same Turning Point TK show where I first met Cadence Carroll. Anyway, I was surprised when TK asked me before the show if I had any requests. I was not used to being asked that. :-) Since I was still pretty much a Kennedys newbie, I innocently wondered aloud about "Mr. Lucky Man" and "If I Weep." TK had done "Mr. Lucky Man" with the drum machine when they had toured as a duo w/ TN the year before. But I found out that "Mr. Lucky Man" (and "If I Weep") were more or less studio creations that they hadn't really worked up as a duo for performance at shows. Before I continue, I want to say that I have been nothing short of *astonished* at TK's facility in being able to play their own songs live in concert, almost at the drop of a hat, without any visible rehearsal. "They got skills." Perhaps their honing their skills goes on behind the scenes when we are not watching. At any rate, their recorded-song-to-live-song ratio must certainly exceed that of TN. And they don't talk nearly as much either, which also = more songs per show than TN. Not that song ratio and quantity are everything. But I digress. :-) Anyway, at that Turning Point show they *did* attempt "Mr. Lucky Man" just before the break, and IMO it flew like angels in flight. Besides TK's gift for live performance, besides their friendliness, and besides their beautifully crafted music, I love how they're able to touch so many different bases in their songs, from the profound to the silly, from the wise to the wistful, and in such a variety of styles, spanning pop, rock, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, country, gospel, space (with "Strangers" :-) --- and now Irish, with "Anna & the Magic Gown." Am I dreaming, or is it really The Kennedys?! "Beam me up, Scotty!" :-) I guess I really *am* Mr. Lucky Man. :-) Bruce "What are we for if not for this" Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 14:57:37 -0400 From: "Rebecca Derry" Subject: Re: [JP] Using Kennedys titles to describe Shannon wrote: >This was harder for me than the one on the NieldsNook. But my reasoning was that while Nields songs tend to describe reality, The Kennedys often transcend reality. And maybe that applies to titles too? Does that make any sense at all? Does that make any sense at all? >Shannon rocks! *blush* Thanks, Rebecca! *hugs* I needed that! Anyway, the more that I think about it, what Rebecca says makes sense. I do find the Nields music to be more applicable to real-life situations. One of the things that I love about them is their ability to make me see my life in their music. If I say to a fellow Nooker that I'm feeling "Snowman" or "May Day Cafi" on a particular day, I very likely don't have to explain any further. If I said that I was feeling "Rappahannock" one day, even the most avid of Kennedys fans might not be able to put a finger on my exact meaning. I love the Kennedys so much for their amazing musicianship and lyrics, but on a different level. I don't see my own life in their music so much as I see the lives of the people and places that they're singing about. I just feel good when I hear the Kennedys sing and play, and I don't really think about other emotions than enjoying the music. Im not sure if I quite explained what I meant, but I know most of you know my ramblings enough to get it. *grin* On a completely unrelated note, I'm going to see Vance Gilbert on Saturday night at Godfrey Daniels, and I'm so excited I could just pee! Yay! I love him!
