Is this generally a good festival? Tracy backed by TK, Susan Werner, Richard Thompson, Roger McGuinn, Don Edwards, and Bruce Cockburn add up to a pretty good draw. Not to mention any other performances I happen to come across that sound good. I'd just have to be careful to avoid hearing Jimmy Dale Gilmore's voice on Sunday afternoon. :) Then again, I may not show up till Saturday and would miss DE and BC on Friday evening, too. But, yeah. . . Any comments on how this festival runs? Is it worth a five or six hour drive each way? Pete maybe??? Maybe Tracy should move out East. Is this generally a good festival? Disclaimer: I've only been to the Philadelphia Folk Festival twice, and only camped there once. But from that experience... The lineup: Well, judge for yourself. I was surprised by how few names I recognized personally, but I think that that's partially a fluke and partially because I'm young and many of the performers are older. Ironically, the one act that was making me think that it'd be worth the trip was Dave and Tracy, and well...I'm sorry, but I don't think that the tribute isn't going to be as powerful as the one at Falcon Ridge, and I'm not sure that I could deal with a diluted version. The camping: sucks. You have to park your car in a lot and carry your stuff up a hill, and it's hot and hectic and very crowded. The cost: is more than the other folk festivals I've attended. The sound is good, though, and they're very established. And any chance to see Pete, Maura, and Tracy is good...if I had infinite money and time, I'd most likely be there. He died, way too young and way too soon for those of us who knew and loved him, a little over a month ago, on July 19th, succumbing to a heart attack while in western Massachusetts on tour with his (life and musical) partner, Tracy Grammer. He was a mystic, a storyteller, a shaman, and a bodhisattva, all residing under the guise of an ordinary Oklahoma boy (though he was born in CA). He was goodness, sacredness, and kindness, wearing a crooked, impish smile and boyish gestures. Dave had a fondness for the Kennedys, and told me on more than one occasion that if they ever needed a banjo player, all they'd have to do was call. He said that it was his dream to be the third, jangly member of TK. For anyone else on this list who may not have discovered Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer while Dave was still with us, I would be more than happy to send out mix CDs. All I would ask in return is that, if their music strikes something within you, you go to http://www.daveandtracy.com/ and buy as many CDs as you can afford. This will allow Tracy some time and space to work out the details for the next leg of her journey, which, for the immediate future, includes the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and then backing up Joan Baez for the conclusion of her tour. Members of the Dave and Tracy list have also started various grassroots campaigns to both aid Tracy and help keep Dave's work alive, one of which is the idea of donating one, two or all three of Dave's CDs to one's local library, so that others can have access to this treasure trove of riches. There is also a memorial fund set up in Dave's name, which will be used for various causes dear to Dave's heart. More information about this can likewise be found at the duo's website (http://www.daveandtracy.com/).
