This was *his* festival I thought, and Tracy's. Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this year's festival so very meaningful and moving, in so honoring Dave, Tracy, and their music. I was just riveted in place when Tracy announced that she was going to sing "The Mountain." That was Stephen, Peter, and my "special song" when we climbed Mount Evans in Colorado a few weeks back. And I don't think anyone else could have been a more appropriate choice for guitar player, along with Tracy I mean, than Pete Kennedy, who played the song so flawlessly, so faithfully, with such good taste. I wasn't all weepy during the Dave tribute, possibly because I'd gotten the tears out of my system on the drive *to* FR, sobbing all the way from Boston to Hillsdale, as Stephen will attest, having only dared to play Dave & Tracy's 3 albums during that drive to FR, the first time I'd dared to play those songs after hearing of Dave's passing. I thought that Chris and Meredith Thompson showed their true colors in coming through with a soulful rendition of "Tanglewood Tree." Mark Erelli showed that he's for real too IMO, with a really tasty rendition of "Cowboy Singer." Nerissa & Katryna put in their licks too with "Ordinary Town," assisted by their stalwart cohorts Dave C and Lorne Entress. Erin McKeown's "Gentle Arms of Eden" worked so well for her! She continues to surprise and amaze me, more and more, every time I see her. Kris Delmhorst and her sidekick Mark Erelli did a very good job too on "Farewell to Fiddler's Rim." I was hoping that one of this year's fiddlers at the festival would get to play in the Dave tribute. EFO laid it all on the line with their hearts on their sleeves with their version of "Farewell to Saint Dolores." "Happytown" was a perfect selection for the Kennedys to cover. I was even speculating with Stephen in the drive to Hillsdale that maybe TK would do that one. Christopher Williams made a believer out of me too, with his "Merlin's Lament." Then Chris Smither blew the house down with his dead-on deadpan rendition of "Crocodile Man." Wow. Puff the Magic Dragon, up in a wisp of smoke! That was smokin'. The tribute concluded with Tracy singing "Gentle Soldier of My Soul" in the way only she can. I was glad I got to chat briefly with Tracy at the Dave shrine on the midway, and that I got to sign the guestbook. Dave and Tracy made some of the best music around IMO, even though I was almost too late in finding that out. I might've missed a couple of people on a couple of the songs. Ticket to My House (duo) Haven't Got a Thing (duo) Little Red Dog Caterpillar Snowman (duo) The Sweetness (w/ Dave Chalfant on bass, Lorne Entress on drums, Maura Kennedy on harmony vocal, Pete Kennedy on guitar, Ben Demerath on guitar) This Town is Wrong (w/ DC on bass, Lorne on drums, Ben on guitar) Love Me One More Time (w/ DC on bass, Lorne on drums, Maura on harmony vocal, Pete on guitar) Love & China (w/ DC on guitar (slide), Lorne on drums, Ben on bass) Yesterday's Girl (w/ DC on guitar, Lorne on drums, Ben on bass) Keys to the Kingdom (w/ DC on bass, Lorne on drums, Pete on guitar, Ben on guitar, Kris Delmhorst on fiddle, and Maura, Erin McKeown, Mark Erelli, Chris & Meredith Thompson, Beth Amsel, Joziah & Sharkey & Tink from Gandalf Murphy - --- among others --- on feel-good background singing, swaying, stomping, and clapping of hands. TN end their FR sets with their friends like this every year. All in all, a very impressive set I thought, which "done them proud." Y4Y! I first laid eyes on Cadence when she was sitting in as drummer in one of The Kennedys' Acoustic Cafe shows in Bridgeport CT last year. I could not tell from that alone what a gifted singer and songwriter Cadence was turning out to be. But from that gig supporting the Kennedys alone, I *could* tell that Cadence was something special. The joy that she brought to everything she was doing was simply remarkable. She brought out the best in the Kennedys, and vice versa. The first time I heard Cadence play her own music was at Rick Rock's concert series at the Hammond House in Valhalla NY last summer, when the Kennedys were co-billing with Groovelily. I was there with my son Peter. The Kennedys gave Cadence some time out of their own set to play somewhere between 3-5 of her own songs, including "Evolve" which is instantly memorable at first hearing. I've been singing the 3rd part of the round ever since, since "Evolve" is inevitably a singalong! Y4Y! :-) Then at FRFF '01 Cadence sang on the midway just before TK's "guerilla folk" set in front of their vintage clothing booth. Stephen & I got front row seats for that one, sitting right at the feet of Cadence & TK. IMS, this is the first time I ever heard the expression "Yay for Yay," which has been attributed to Cadence. Since that time Yay for Yay has entered the folk world in Nooker and Jangle-Poet circles, through the "folk process" of infectious joy and word-of-mouth. Side note: Stephen, Peter, and my "Life Is Large" parody "Yay For Yay" credits Maura Kennedy in verse 1; Rhiannon Richard in verse 2; and Cadence Carroll in verse 3. Ever since FRFF '01 I've looked forward to seeing Cadence every chance I could get, although the logistics of moving to Boston and following 3 other bands religiously has mostly gotten in the way. So I made sure that Stephen & I got our front row seat spots back for Cadence's Acoustic Live booth midway set at this year's FR --- and I made sure too that we did not miss Cadence & TK's Family Stage set, even though that children's set directly conflicted with seeing 2 of the 3 bands I've made pacts in blood to follow (TN and Gandalf Murphy. :-) Cadence Carroll at the Acoustic Live booth, 2:15 Saturday: Hoping You Believe You Are My Family Harvard Square Evolve I'd appreciate a helpful correction if Stephen & I got the title wrong for "You Are My Family." Stephen & I pretty much take turns writing down the setlists, and that is what Stephen wrote down at the Acoustic Live booth set. I wish that the FR artists always had this much time to show their stuff to good advantage, at every workshop, every time out. Some of the workshops are just too darn crowded, and leave the artists too little space. Not in this case though! The Kennedys - "When I Go." Could this have been any lovelier? Maura's lead vocal was just perfect on the Dave & Tracy classic. And Pete was obviously a very busy man this last week in preparation --- not only for their own set on the mainstage; not only for their full set of almost all different numbers with Cadence at the Family Stage; not only learning several Dave Carter songs; but also serving as the ringmaster for the Beatles tribute. Pete rules! :-) Chris & Meredith Thompson - "Tanglewood Tree." Same as at the Dave Carter tribute the night before. Nerissa & Katryna - "I'll Meet You in the Sky." This has always been one of my very favorite Nields classics, a big reason Mousse has long been my favorite Full Band Nields album. N&K were obviously really broken up, and had to sing this one through the tears. Kennedys - "Ride Angel Ride." Great choice, powerful and rockin' folk-rock anthem. Chris & Meredith - "Clearwater." The Thompson duo loves to do this one about riding on the sloop at Clearwater with Pete Seeger. Nerissa & Katryna - "Mr. Right Now." C&M and P&M joined in, and Dave C made a surprise appearance on bass that just about shocked NN out of her socks, in a good way. That was so cute. NN sang, "He smells of fresh cut grass and Falcon Ridge." :-) Kennedys - "Nickeltown." Chris & Meredith - Dave Carter's "The Mountain." Gasp. They can sing on my sloop anyday. "Come On Down to my boat baby." 3 cheers for Chris & Meredith Thompson! Then N&K and P&M were jockeying for position as to which key they should do "Easy People" in. They don't do it in the same key. Earth to Nook! Earth to Jangle-Poets! This was the first time TK and TN had combined forces to do *both* of their versions of "Easy People," as one. The Birchmere doesn't count, because that was TK's version *only* --- N&K just surprised P&M onstage at the Birchmere. Maura prevailed, I do believe, with the key of A --- and she sagely exclaimed, "Yay for A!!!" I am not making this up! :-) It's not for no reason that Maura gets the whole first verse of "Yay For Yay" dedicated to her. :-) "Easy People." Dave C and C&M joined in the fun too. Basically, TK did verse 1 *their* way --- N&K did verse 2 *their* way --- and Katryna led off verse 3 before being joined by the whole ensemble. It was so glorious, a true highlight of the festival for me. I truly *believe* in Easy People, and everyone on that stage *were* the living embodiments of Easy People in my book. Kennedys - "Get It Right." With Meredith Thompson on drums. Chris & Meredith - "First Step." With Pete guitar solo. Nerissa & Katryna - "The Sweetness." With TK, C&M, and Dave C on bass. Rockin'! Kennedys - "Why Winona Why." Chris & Meredith - "I'll Fly Away." TK and N&K all joined in! How very moving. Ensemble - "Orphan Girl." Verse 1 - Maura; verse 2 - Nerissa; verse 3 - C&M; verse 4 - Katryna. A lot like the version TN & TK did at the Birchmere, only with C&M on verse 3. This was hands down the best workshop I saw at FRFF '02, and surely one of the best I've ever seen, period.
