Pete seemed to be really fired up and I especially liked his extended solos this time. Does anyone know whether TK are opening or headlining? It will affect whether someone gets to come with me to the << At http://www.ccparks.com/sundown.html, it lists EFO with special guest TK, so I would assume TK are opening. I'd expect that TK would open for EFO just about anywhere they both play, anyway. It also says that all shows start at 7:30 PM at McLaughlin-Norcross Memorial Dell, Haddon Heights. It's supposed to be at 13th Avenue, Park Drive and Prospect Boulevard in Haddon Heights. But I only get a hit for 13th ave, so here is a link that should at least get you close: http://mapsonus.switchboard.com/bin/maps-maponly/usr=~3cffa252.80cbc.3b3 d.8/c=8/isredir=1/. I see a Park Av and a Prospect Ridge Blvd on this map, so about where they cross in the green is probably the right neighborhood. If TK weren't reasonably thorough and put the park website address in their Musi-Cal listing, I wouldn't have even found out what time it was scheduled. I think I'm beginning to take the Conehead attitude to Musi-Cal and bands' dependence on same. There are certainly pluses to M-C, but I'm finding that it's necessary to do a lot of hunting and jumping around and cross referencing to track down all the information needed to be able to attend a show, unless it happens to be local and I'm already well-familiar with the venue/festival. And even then, it can be a bit of a search for some details like "Time". For anyone from the Nields Nook (isn't almost everyone here? :) ), I haven't forgotten my offer to build a web page(s) of venue information for Nields performances. I've worked at it in fits and starts, but haven't made as much progress as I'd like. Actually, I wanted to have it done back in April! :( Too many other things happening, including a fair bit of travel-time to shows. But I haven't forgotten it, or given up on it, either. Maybe by next touring season? I guess that would be the autumn, now. If and when I ever get it ready, it will include The Kennedys' venues, too. (I hope). One of the major delays is that I need to automate a lot of information retrieval, because there is no other way that I will ever keep up with updates. I mean, Camden County Parks Sundown Music Series? How stable is that going to be as regards "venue information"? While we're on the subject, for those who are interested: Janis Ian is at the same venue July 17th; Grey Eyed Glances play there on August 28th. They were taking back X my use of the term 'wasted away in Kennedyville' & I got the distinct impression they would prefer not 2 B associated W/ Buffett. When I mentioned he had a couple of good songs in his younger days, I was politely asked "which 1s?", 2 which I replied, "well there was Railroad Lady". If there is guilt X association, Buffett is way 2 close 2 David Allen Coe, who is about as racist & sexist as they come, & very deserving of censorship resulting from the abuse of free speech. The suspense was just *killing* me, wondering when oh when would someone, anyone point out this Nields connection WRT the new Kennedys album. And "I Don't Trust Words" is a really really neat song that P&M haven't cranked out in concert yet to the best of my knowledge. Yay for the new Kennedys album, Yay for Ken, and Y4Y!!! When there is little NC to be had, you almost have to manufacture NC out of whole cloth. But Katryna and Dave *are* on "Get It Right"! :-) >I'm really enjoying this CD and will post a full review of >it to the Jangle Poets list soon. But if you're a Kennedys fan >and you're not on Jangle Poets, you're still missing out.) Talk about your duplicating messages... This door swings both ways you know! ;-) Before I proceed to review The Kennedys' Get It Right, let me go on record to say that I have *never* been above blowing out people's inboxes. Shameless hussy! :-P Yet I have stayed off the Jangle Poets for just that reason too. Consider this my gift to the Jangle Poets list. I have never felt any compunction whatsoever about posting Kennedys reviews to Bob Brown's Nields list (if Sheila can have her own list, so can Bob Brown), just as I have never shied from posting Maggies content to the Nook. For one thing, both the Kennedys and Maggies are great! For another, both of those bands have close ties and even closer musical affinities with TN. And thirdly, I've been on a mission to raise consciousness about Nields, Kennedys, and Maggies, amongst people who might best benefit from the exposure. I mean, Nields fans are the greatest music fans in the world, right? :-) The Kennedys Get It Right What a great followup album to Evolver, which was my favorite album of 2000. For the purposes of this review, I'm going to be putting this new outing only in relation to TK's other studio releases, without taking into account their great live album Positively Live. Kennedys albums keep sounding better and better! P&M are great songwriters in the process of Evolving --- and Pete is a great producer. One should listen to River of Fallen Stars, Life Is Large, Angel Fire, Evolver, and Get It Right, consecutively, straight through, to fully appreciate the steady growth of The Kennedys. "Ride, Angel, Ride" is an uptempo pop gem, a great way to open up the new album, following in the tradition of the opening title cut of 1996's Life Is Large, the positive-vibe "Common Bond" from 1998's Angel Fire, and the uplifting opener "Pick You Up" from 2000's Evolver. "Didn't It Rain" is great! And the production is "out there" and all over the map! I first heard this song at the acoustic HaHaHa show at E. Greenwich RI on 10/20/00 (the same show as the debut of the otherwise never-played "Heading Home" a/k/a The Anniversary Song), and let me tell you, "Didn't It Rain" has never failed to impress me as *the* coolest new Kennedys song, in the past year and a half. The "rap" middle section with the words, "One for danger, two for luck/ Sick man, old man, dead man, monk" rings the bell for me every time. And then after the "rap" middle section, it's just awesome the way it launches right back to the main theme, "Didn't it rain." Wow. This song is like a runaway train to pop phantasmagoria. "There's no protection on the Midnight Train." Great song! "Get It Right" follows in the soulful footsteps of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," as TK infuse this groove with really moving lyrics of their own. Kennedys music seamlessly fuses influences from pop, rock, folk, country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, *and* soul! And they do it so confidently, putting the Kennedys trademark of grooviness on every genre they touch, so that it all comes out sounding like The Kennedys. They reach out and touch "Everything That Touches You." TK are working on a groovy thing! :-) "Angel and You," "Half of Us," and "Nickeltown" are a veritable triumvirate of Kennedys pop perfection, just boom boom boom, three more great songs in a row. "Pearl's Eye View" is the song about war correspondent Dickey Chappelle, co-written with Nanci Griffith. I don't know what else to say except that "Pearl's Eye View" is one of the most breathlessly exciting, most keenly evocative sung *stories* that I have ever heard. A major achievement in folk rock music IMO. "Why, Winona, Why?" is just so much fun! Like TN, TK cover all the bases from pathos to poking fun, from sad to silly, from breathtaking ("Pearl's Eye View") to just plain funny ("Why, Winona, Why?"). Would that *more* crimes of petty larceny would spawn such hilarious songs from folk songwriters! It'd be a much happier world. :-) In "I Don't Trust Words," TK manage to corral yet another musical genre within the purview of their musical OK Corral, namely the Latin beat. And somewhere in there, you can just make out Nieldsy people Dave and Katryna speaking in tongues (Spanish? French?) --- an effect not altogether unlike the "Erl-konig" evocation at the end of TN's "Einstein's Daughter" (spoken by David Nields in German). "Galaxy Express" is a clever sendup of lounge music. Lounge music??, but it's a really cool sound that P&M manage to squeeze out of their studio bag of tricks, tongues in their cheeks all the way as they invite one and all to "Take a trip on a new astral plane... Saddle up your satellite, it's a supersonic scene... Leave the droids in their biosphere, we're already there if you know what I mean..." It's a really fun retro-sounding tweak of "spaced" music, reminiscent of the James Bond spoof from Evolver, "The Girl with the Blonde Eye." Shagadelic, baby! :-) "The Things We Touch" closes out the album with a really dreamy, impressionistic sounding number, a little reminiscent of Sandy Denny's "Fotheringay." I finally got that right, right Maura? :-) The Kennedys touch so many musical bases, and put on live shows that both touch the heart and thrill the imagination with their unique jangly-poet brand of pop-folk wonder, winsomeness, and delight. It's not too late to check out The Kennedys! And I think you'll be glad if you do.
