The Kennedys played on the Bridgeton fountain plaza friday evening & almost nobody came. I was running late & not quite sure where the fountain was. I rolled down the window 2 ask the next person I C & wouldn't U know it's Bruce, walking down the sidewalk. The TKs were tuning up as I pulled in just in the nik of time. @ no time was there more than 20 people there although 1 woman was wearing a NiELdS Greta t-shirt. The Kennedys weren't talking much but they sure played a lot of songs 4 a 1 hr show! Lots of chesnuts scattered in amoung the new jewels from Get It Right. I leaned over 2 Bruce & said " I'd like 2 hear Never Learn, they hardley ever play it. " Don't U know they played it W/O me requesting it... So the magik was kicking in. After the show we finally found the Golden Pigeon diner & we discussed the finer points of Get It Right over a very large plate of clam linguine. I can't believe I ate the whole thing. From there Bruce & I headed over 2 join the Irregulars @ Parvin Lake, setting up camp in the dark only 2 B hit X a squal that drenched our tents B4 we were set up. I don't mind sleeping in the car but Bruce is not very 'com4table W/ it. The magik continued as we easily breached the Appel Farm gate. Lots of folks showed up 4 the 14th annual Appel Farm Folk Fest. Jeff, Shelia, Larry, Charlie Sweeny, Larry, Jo, Jen Brewer, & Coutney 2 name a few. Definately a JangleNook quorum. Ashley Spencer was there (she's a babe) W/ a friend. Patty was in good spirits. Dave Carter & Tracey Grammer R just the nicest people. It's always a pleasure 2 chat W/ those 2 folkniks. After some minor tech trouble they gave us a fine set. Because there is 2 stages competing W/ each other I always miss 1/2 of the show. I never did C Entrain. The Artists 4merly Known As The Probe, after a short delay delivered a rather standard set W/O much banter. The kid stuff seemed 2 get the best response from the crowd. I did catch some grief from KN about not coming 2 their shows since the new CD was released until I reminded her that, 4 the most part I had already seen the 'same' show in Greenfield, MA, only 7 hours from my home. Jeez, U just can't please some EZPeople. Jackson Browne was, well... Jacksin Browne. He opened W/ I'm Alive, from the other greatest breakup CDs of all time. The high point 4 me was the acoustic Bright Baby Blues from Late 4 The Sky. We got the heck out of there B4 he was done so we could get 2... The Point in Bryn Mawr, about an hour away. We missed the 1st 2 songs of P&M althoigh we didn't miss as much as Shelia, who just had 2 stop X Dar's show in Phila B4 hitting the Point. I have 2 say Shelia has been responding very well 2 my influence as a role model. She's turned out 2 B a real road warrior. What R we 4 if not 4 this? We were back @ the lake X 2AM but the tone was quiet & shortly thereafter I collapsed in my now dry tent. Bruce didn't even make it 2 the campfire 50 feet away. Sunday was a clear, beautiful day 2 B on the lake. I wanted 2 have a swim but circumstances beyond my control made me beat a hasty retreat back across the Delaware. Sometimes it's good 2 have a river between U & the naturalists. I never had the chance 2 say goodbye but it was definately time 2 cut bait. This has happened again & again so many times in the past... I sort of always expect Cone to show up right at the witching hour, and am still a little surprised when he sometimes doesn't make it. >@ no time was there more than 20 people there although 1 woman >was wearing a NiELdS Greta t-shirt. They had to get the set in before the rain, which came right on schedule shortly after the final chords of the last song. I think Pete had made some kind of Camelot-like decree about it not raining on their parade. But if it *had* rained, they would've had a couple of songs handy just for the occasion: "Dance Around in the Rain," "Didn't It Rain," the Beatles' "Rain," even "River of Falling Stars" if you use your imagination a little. TK are very attuned to the cycles of nature. "They're such sky-oriented people..." (Joni Mitchell, "Paprika Plains") The rainbow after the rain stopped was a nice touch too. It was a magical time. >Lots of chesnuts scattered in amoung the new jewels from >Get It Right. I leaned over 2 Bruce & said " I'd like 2 >hear Never Learn, they hardley ever play it. Expect the totally unexpected, at the Kennedys! I've got to run, and will shortly play catch up on the set lists, etc. Mad Baggins C-Head coneh@usa.net Received: from cmsmail06.cms.usa.net [127.0.0.1] by cmsmail06.cms.usa.net via mtad (CM.1201.1.04A) with ESMTP id 656gFcXfW0610M06; Mon, 03 Jun 2002 23:31:51 GMT Received: from admin.listbox.com [208.210.125.36] by cmsmail06.cms.usa.net via smtad (CM.1201.1.04); Mon, 03 Jun 2002 23:31:48 GMT Received: by admin.listbox.com (Postfix) id 0B0772662A; Mon, 3 Jun 2002 19:31:46 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: nields-nook-outgoing@admin.listbox.com Received: by admin.listbox.com (Postfix, from userid 502) id AF8202662D; Mon, 3 Jun 2002 19:31:45 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: nields-nook@listbox.com Received: from hotmail.com (f7.pav1.hotmail.com [64.4.31.7]) by admin.listbox.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id AFA4F2662A for ; Mon, 3 Jun 2002 19:31:44 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Mon, 3 Jun 2002 16:31:44 -0700 Received: from 64.12.103.33 by pv1fd.pav1.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Mon, 03 Jun 2002 23:31:43 GMT X-Originating-IP: [64.12.103.33] From: "mad baggins" To: nields-nook@listbox.com Subject: Kennedys at Bridgeton NJ 5/31/02 Date: Mon, 03 Jun 2002 19:31:43 -0400 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Message-ID: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 03 Jun 2002 23:31:44.0097 (UTC) FILETIME=[D22BBD10:01C20B56] Sender: owner-nields-nook@admin.listbox.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: nields-nook@listbox.com Would I have driven to see The Kennedys almost all the way to Cape May NJ from the Boston area, if TN hadn't been playing in the same neck of the woods of nowheresville that same weekend? It was a chance too good to pass up: Kennedys at Bridgeton on Friday, Nields at Appel Farm on Saturday. And when I signed onboard Cone Head's Galaxy Express, I discovered to my pleasant surprise that the Kennedys show at the Point later that same night was "doable" as well, even if we stayed for Jackson Browne's closing set at Appel Farm. Imagine the places you'll go, when you sign up for a trip on Cone Head's Galaxy Express! And imagine the tunes that you'll hear on the way! Well, I didn't have to imagine it, and let's just say a new Gandalf Murphy fan was born into the world, right there in the rumble seat of the Galaxy Express, somewhere between Bridgeton NJ, Appel Farm, Parvin Lake State Park, and Bryn Mawr PA. 2002 was already going to be a great Falcon Ridge for me this year, what with both TN and TK in the mix; but with Gandalf Murphy now being there as well, this is going to be a very special FRFF for me this year indeed. Gandalf Murphy has caught more than just my attention though! TK are personally shopping Gandalf Murphy all over the place; promoters in faroff Northampton MA have seen the light and are paving the way for future Slambovian Circus of Dreams shows in the Pioneer Valley; and Cone Head has been pedal to the metal in his push that has helped squeak Gandalf Murphy through the gates of Falcon Ridge and onto the stage in the first place. This is a band to look for great things from in the very near future. Stay tuned. OK, here's what TK played at the Bridgeton fountain --- Pick You Up Didn't It Rain Month of Hours Free Never Learn Half of Us House on Fire Why Winona Why Nickeltown Like a Rolling Stone Get It Right What's Going On Easy People Mr. Lucky Man Mystery Life is Large "Month of Hours" was such a rarety and such a total surprise that in searching for the title of this song on the spur of the moment, neither Cone Head nor I could "Get It Right"! Before the show, I asked Pete to play "something old"... Well, they *did* play "Month of Hours," "Never Learn," "House on Fire," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Mr. Lucky Man," and "Mystery"! Those all made me smile! The connecting thread for the weekend had to be "Easy People," played by TK at Bridgeton on Friday, by TN at Appel Farm on Saturday, and then again by TK at the Point on Saturday night. Easy Living with Easy People! And Jackson Browne even played the spiritual progenitor of the whole Easy People movement too --- "Take It Easy"! :-) I'll be back with much more later. Imagine how much longer this could have been, had a certain Baggins been not quite so easy and so free! :-) Mad Baggins "But when we'd sing together those country harmonies I never heard a sweeter voice come so easy and so free." - --- "Friend of Mine," Kate Wolf _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx Visit The Nields on the web at http://www.nields.com The Nields Nook FAQ is at http://www.nields.com/nields_nook_faq.htm Check out the Kennedys' Official Home Page: http://www.KennedysMusic.com/ Fab photos, the Official tour diary, dashboard Buddha haiku, groovy merchandise...what more could you ask for? ------------------------------ End of jangle-poets-digest V4 #79 *********************************
