This event, sponsored by WEEU 830 The Voice of Berks County, The Inn at Reading-Clarion, and Coatesville Savings Bank, had previously been held as a free concert at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton. As the concert and the idea of a foundation grew, Judith Gabriel, organizer and producer of the concert, decided to move it to a larger venue and charge a ticket price to fund the formation of the foundation. Performers and speakers from the last two years include singer/songwriters Mack Bailey (www.mackbailey.com), from Maryland, Frank DeLaMarre (www.frankdelamarre.com) from New Jersey, and Max Langstaff, creator and producer of both JDs The Wildlife Concert and The Best of John Denver Live, now a Chester Co. resident from Honeybrook. Langstaff, an award-winning producer currently working with Sir George Martin (Beatles) among others, was the catalyst for Denvers decision to make The Wildlife Concert, airing on A&E channel in 1995, and hailed as the most-watched musical program ever to play on A&E. New faces this year include singing/songwriting team Tim & Amy Dabbs (www.hhstudios.com) originally hailing from Michigan and now residing in Johnstown, PA; folksinger Dave Howard, John Denvers performance pilot for over 30 years; and special vocalist/composer, Bill Danoff, co-author of Take Me Home Country Roads as well as many other songs that became John Denver hits, such as Guess Hes Rather Be in Colorado, and Friends, to name just a few. As part of the Starland Vocal Band, Danoff wrote and received five nominations for one of the groups hits, Afternoon Delight. It is a pleasure to have him join us. Bruce Gordon, pilot, environmentalist and long-time friend of John Denver, as well as Dave Howard on Sat., will speak about Johns passion for music and life. The Red Creek Wildlife Center, featuring live birds of prey, will give an environmental talk on The Folly of Men. Representing the Sierra Club/Highlands Coalition, Richard Whiteford, environmental journalist, will discuss biodiversity, how it affects us, and what we can do to help stop the loss. In addition a three-hour retrospective video showing the many sides of JD and his career will be shown. Our very special instrumental guests include Peter Kater, internationally known jazz/New Age pianist and JD friend and Chris Nole, JD performance pianist. All the way from Southern CA, Kater will accompany some songs on which he accompanied John at the very last Choices Symposium at JDs Windstar Foundation, as well as grace us with a few of his own compositions. Katers 28 critically acclaimed releases in 17 years range from World Fusion to Native American collaborations to contemporary jazz, ensembles, full orchestrations, and, of course, his signature solo piano recordings. www.peterkater.com. Nashvilles Chris Nole added heightened energy to John Denver performances for four years. He is a great musician whether on stage or in the studio, whether playing boogie, jazz, original JD arrangements, or traditional holiday tunes. http://www.chrisnole.com He will accompany the majority of tunes, reminiscent for him of the years on the road with JD. In addition, a student from the Esther Boyer School of Music at Temple University, Zachary Rosa, will provide a beat for the singers on Saturday evening. Zachary, who majors in performance art, has played with the Violent Femmes and many other local groups. The John Denver Peace Cloth, a pastiche of pieces of cloth collected from world-wide fans in remembrance of Johns involvement in world peace and sewn together by groups of fans on both the East and West coasts will be on display. It was presented to his brother Ron Deutschendorf two years ago on a day commemorating Peace at the United Nations. It now tours the world to bring peace into peoples awareness. John inspired millions around the world to play an active role in their respective governments, in ecology, and in developing interdependent skills while following individual integrity. The fact that Denver struggled and overcame typical human problems actually provided further evidence of what he sang about in his song for mathematical genius and friend Buckminster Fuller, What One Man Can Do. Denver knew that most of us have to struggle to find out who we really are and then use those strengths to help others. This was the message in a lot of his music in addition to those themes concerning love, peace, and the environment. Many fans throughout the world give Denvers music credit for healing them physically, emotionally, and spiritually, noting the positive nature of his songs even when the theme is more serious. John Bertrand, Australian Americas Cup winner, actually played Denvers music throughout the contest, claiming it kept him calm and able to focus on winning. He went on to say how it healed the body and soul. John quietly responded Thats what it was meant to do. Denver died October 12, 1997, doing one of his very favorite things-flying. He loved the freedom and the solitude of the air, being certified in every kind of aircraft except helicopters. He paid a price that many people who live life to the fullest pay, doing extraordinary things alone or with extraordinary people-a life full to overflowing-one many people would envy. Tickets for Friday concert alone are $18, for all day Sat. alone $37, for a combined two-day ticket $45, and for a VIP ticket $80. The VIP ticket includes a two-day pass as well as a Meet and Greet the Performers party at the Inn at Reading-Clarion after Saturday nights concert from 11 to 1:00 as an additional fundraiser for the foundation. Tickets at event will be $20 for Friday, and $40 for Sat. Tickets are available at www.ticketweb.com or send request with type of ticket, number of tickets, and phone number to P.O. Box13363, Reading, PA 19612 or call 610-371-9122. Raindate on June 30 with combined concerts and all day affair. People with Friday only pass will have to pay an additional fee for raindate. Proceeds of the concert go to the formation of the John Denver Memorial Foundation. The foundation will support education through scholarships and grants as well as supporting various environmental and humanitarian endeavors while encouraging the appreciation of live acoustic music and new/young singer-songwriters and musicians in general.
