I'm loving hearing stories of road trips and good gigs. Great post also about the Didn't It Rain MP3 on washpost.com - it sounds too groovy! Given that I'm an "intermittant" Jangler these days, can someone remind me when Galaxy Express is going to be available? I need something to take the blues away from paying $5.50 for a gallon of gas. You'd hate it here Cone... However, 'FUV frequently runs the 'really good' interviews again in the evening, though it's usually a week or two (sometimes more) later. Those repeats are usually on Monday or Tuesday evening. No guarantees. Best to figure a way to record 'em the first time around. Easiest way that I've found is simply to run a loop between your computer and your speakers, using whatever recording device you like. I usually put my MiniDisc recorder in that loop. For longer recordings, I sometimes use my DAT in the loop instead. You can just as easily do it with an audio cassette recorder or VCR. If you use a VCR, you've got a handy TIMER to use, for those things you want to record while you're at work. ~R. It was weird. Felt very decadent to be traveling around with music as my focus, when there were so many things I *should* be doing at home. But, oh, was it fun! :) I've already posted about the Nerissa and Katryna show at Godfrey Daniels last Thursday night. (And that's the last of the Nields content in this post.) From there, I drove to Syracuse, NY to see Eric Taylor for the second time in two weeks. The venue in Syracuse, Happy Endings, a coffee and desert house, has a listening room about the size of Godfrey Daniels, though maybe more bare, where the Folkus Project (www.folkus.org) stages shows. The coffee was good. The blueberry cheesecake was good. Eric played a much longer set than at The Point, where he and Lynn Miles had been double-billed and each played equal time. This time, Kyle Shiver (Shriver?) opened and only played a five song set. Eric then played for about two hours or so. Apparently, he has not been playing Memphis Midnight - Memphis Morning, which Lyle Lovett covered on Step Inside This House, lately. So he brought a local musician and fan up on stage to play it using Eric's guitar. Put the guy right on the spot. Apparently the guy hadn't played it in about a year. But, after a false start or two trying to get the key right, he acquitted himself very well. Let that be a warning to all fans - be careful what you say when you're gushing to your hero. You don't know what sort of embarrassing moment may be just around the corner. :) Anyway, for me, listening to Eric Taylor is all about the images that come from the words. The music is just a bonus. A fascinating two hours. His poetic spoken word intro to Dean Moriarty about cars and Jack Kerouac is pure performance. This is what Hemmingway was talking about when he said about writing one true sentence. Eric also said that songwriting is better than any shrink he's ever been to (this, coming from a practicing psychologist!). If you really work at the lyrics to say what you feel and are honest about it, then you eventually work your way to the truth of what you know or believe. (I'm paraphrasing, but I think I got the gist of that correct.) Saturday took me to Garrison, NY along the Hudson River opposite West Point. A very tiny venue, The Depot Theatre, an old railroad depot converted into a theatre where a local company stages plays. This time, it was to hear Vince Bell, another Texas songwriter whose style falls somewhere among Eric Taylor, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle. Vince came back from a major car accident in 1982 - that led to one of his vocal chords being cut, major damage to his right picking/strumming arm and head injuries that affect his short term memory - to create some mighty fine music. Nanci Griffith fans would recognize his The Sun, The Moon and Stars and his Woman Of The Phoenix. Lyle covered his I've Had Enough on Step Inside This House. This time, Andy Revkin, the science writer for the New York Times opened. Although I can see why Andy is not a headlining act, he did come back later to add some very tasty slide guitar and mandolin to most of Vince's songs. Andy is a left handed player playing right handed instruments strung right handed, so he produces some interesting tones with his playing. After Vince finished playing (over two hours) at nearly 6:00 PM, I made a major mistake and did not make an effort to drive to Endicott to see The Burns Sisters that same evening. Instead I ended up wasting a lot of time zigging and zagging through central New Jersey - not quite lost, but not getting to where I wanted to be, either. Oh, well. In the end, I escaped from New Jersey and spent the night in Pennsylvania. Sunday evening, I was in Skillman, NJ at the Montgomery Arts Center to see Kate Campbell. I suspect that a lot of JangleNookers would appreciate Kate's music. Acoustic guitar based singer songwriter with gospel influences. The daughter of a Baptist minister who was against segregation, several of her songs are about growing up in Mississippi during the civil rights era. Since this was the first time I saw here live, I was thrilled that she played Lanterns On The Levee, a song from her first CD, Songs From The Levee, that manages to meld a song about warmth, comfort, and safety with a melody that reinforces the mood of the lyrics. Not an easy subject to evoke through melody. She also writes some really funny songs like Funeral Food. (Think Cheryl Wheeler's Estate Sales song.) Anyway, I don't know how Conehead can do this all the time. Maybe it was partly because this trip focused on performers who are all great lyricists, but I found it difficult to absorb my reactions to one performer before it was time to listen to the next. By the time I left Vince Bell, there were all these sounds bouncing around inside me and they seemed to be going out of phase with each other. There wasn't time enough between shows for some of the lasting resonances to properly sink in. It felt like I was missing something. Not getting the full benefit of what each artist was presenting. Maybe I'll try again with shows that don't focus so much on lyrics. One thing's for sure: I can't do any more of these road trips without taking my guitar with me. Ooooohh, my fingers were itching after every one of these shows! I don't intend to continue to post blow by blow details of my travels to see acts that aren't necessarily of interest to JangleNookers, but did want to post my thoughts on my first attempt at being a Conehead impersonator. :) Ken Hoping to hear Susan Werner Friday and Kevin Salem Saturday night in New York City. And I already have my tickets to see Nanci do a DVD taping in Knoxville next Thursday night. This will make up for skipping Nanci to see Eric and Lynn the day after HaHahHa at the Birchmere. Yay!
