How about that Faye Brown? It's hard 2 believe she gets any work done, what W/ being out of the office so much... Hey U, JangleNookPoets & others! Here's a look back @ last weekend, which started out W/ a conflict on Thursday evening. The Kennedys in Annapolis against N&K NiELdS @ Godfrey Daniels which puts me right smack in the middle. As I headed down the eastern shore of MD I was overcome X Xcruciating self doubt, the result of which I immediatly terminated my road trip. I'm not really sure why but I've learned that ignoring the inner light usually results in some type of mis4tune, there4 I terminated Thursday's sojourn 4 the relative comfort of a truck stop salad bar. When I get hungry I become indecisive... I think I might B getting soft. After work on Friday I met up W/ a local friend (yes, I do have a couple of local friends) who asked 2 follow me up 2 New Holland, PA, 2 the 16th SPRING GULCH FOLK FESTIVAL, a mini- Philly Folk Fest featuring more of my favorite per4mers than previous years although they do put on a 1st class affair every year. As we headed in2 Amish Country the rain began 2 fall as the sunset disappeared in2 funky purple storm clouds. After a detour thru Gap we headed over 2 my friends place in Lancaster 2 check out the weather channel & wait out the falling rain. Night decended B4 the rain stopped & X the time we had dry pavement 2 continue we had missed the Friday evening stage show featuring Christine Lavin & Liv Taylor. We arrived about the time the show ended noticing that the gate was left unguarded which I interpreted as a sign 2 drive right in & make ourselves @ home, which we did W/O incident... Spring Gulch is a piece of cake. When the stage show ends @ Spring Gulch a great campfire starts in the pavillion down X the spring fed lake. When we arrived it started 2 rain again but the pavillion provided Xcellent shelter from the storm as the 75 or so folkniks huddled 2gether 4 warmth & sang the night away. The highlight 4 me was the whole group singing Daydream Believer in a great chorus. Since open fires R permitted various campsites had warm cozy festivities in full swing. I recall fantastic renditions of Piece Of My Heart & Stormy Monday so U can get a feel 4 the kind of crowd that turns out in the rain @ Spring Gulch. Later still I threw a tarp over my leaky sun roof & decended in2 the abyss of slumber. I awoke 2 an ominous overcast sky W/ occassional sprinkles of rain that were @ times steady & eventually tapered off X midday. The Full Frontal Folk (F3) girls were in the house. I ran in2 Journey Bear (aka Steve Bornstein, Mandolin Steve) & I believe @ some point our altitudes became adjusted JB per4med on mandolin W/ the Philadelphia Jug Band. If U like jug band music the Philly Jug Band is 1 of the best. Their new CD The Philadelphia Jug Band is superb but un4tunately this music rarely gets played on the radio outside of XPN's Gene Shay show. Gene was there telling some really lame jokes as he has been known 2 do... Did U hear about the Amish hooker in Intercourse, PA? 2 men a night (too Mennonite). I guess U had 2 B there. We were treated 2 a couple of workshops that included the Kennedys, acoustic rock songs & fiddle tunes W/O fiddles, the latter having Bryan Bowers on autoharp. I believe F3 did a harmony workshop in the barn that I missed. Yes, the Ks were in the house & they were feeding Gene Shay bad jokes all afternoon. The evening show started W/ bagpipes, naturally, & then F3 hit the stage 4 a brief set. They were followed X an inspired per4mance X Pete & Maura who near the end of the show called F3 on stage 2 join them. Dispite the fact that Jezabel got lost & totally dissed them, a great time was had X every1 else on stage. The show continued W/ Loudin Wainright III, who in my opinion is 1 of the most pompous yuppie assholes I have ever met, dispite the fact he was schooled in Delaware & should B smart enough 2 know better. In my younger days I found him entertaining but now in my 'sober' years I think of him as a bore who rests on shaky laurals W/ little 2 no redeeming value. Debbie Davies blues band was a refreshing change that kicked ass & had the folks up & dancing. She is possibly the best female R&B guitarist I have ever seen... better player than Bonnie Raitt. Bryan Bowers has been 1 of my favorite per4mers since I accidently discovered him X winning a door prize over 20 years ago. He hasn't been touring these circles much, prefering 2 roam the wild countryside between Seattle & Alaska, so it was a rare east coast appearence. Bryan Bowers has single handedly redefined the role of auto harp in modern folk music. It isn't just about pushing buttons & strumming any more thanks 2 this man who plays bass, melody, & harmony on an instrument that is pretty much overlooked X mainstream musicians. I was so impressed W/ Bryan the 1st time I heard him that I went out & purchased a brand new auto harp. It's a wonderful instrument if U can keep it tuned, which in kind of like a full time job. Bryan Bowers is also a storyteller Xtrordinare' & he ended the evening show W/ a story about fishing in Alaska when he found out about the 911 attacks. It was very deep stuff that kind of blind sided me because I was thinking it was about fishing. I don't know if it's been recorded yet, as Bryan is so out of the loop he doesn't have a website & could care less about computer technology. Yes, there still seems 2 B great numbers of folks out there who have no need or desire 2 B part of all this cyberhooey. THIS IS WHY BANDS SHOULD NEVER DISCONTINUE SNAIL MAILINGS 2 RELY XCLUSIVELY ON THE INTERNET 2 CONNECT & DISTRIBUTE INFO 2 THE FANS. The majority of people in this country & abroad have no interest in internet access. It is a luxury 4 the privledged few who choose, or R forced X their livelihoods 2 use this medium. I would speculate that the majority of folks will never B able 2 afford internet access W/O spending resources that would inhibit their ability 2 attend live per4mances. The costs just keep going thru the roof W/ no end in site. So U C, the internet is really just a bourgeois indulgence that serves 2 Xtend the gap between the haves & the have nots, W/ the have nots being almost entirely Xcluded from the in4mation pool. I know lots of folks who don't find out about cool shows because they have no interest or desire 2 B cyber savy. Has a decision been made that these people R no longer worthy 2 B part of the folk audience @ large? That's what U R saying when U rely Xclusively on internet 2 distribute vital in4mation. Snail mail is here 2 stay so get used 2 it. There is no free lunch on the internet. On Sunday the sun made a rare Spring Gulch appearence. I found the roach vile I had lost the night B4. There it was sitting right in front of the stage. Now that would have been a decent ground score if some1 had been paying attention, but as it was I reclaimed the missing roaches & proceded 2 destroy the remaining evidence. Hey, it's my civic duty 2 C that this stuff doesn't fall in2 the wrong hands. I wouldn't want some schoolkid 2 find it... John Flynn, Peacetrain delivered powerful sets. The festival concluded W/ Bill Miller, a native American who, IMO, has sold out 4 the clothes, jewelry, music, & lifestyle of his oppressers. He's a decent rythem guitarist & flute player but I C huge contradictions between his message & his lifestyle. I wouldn't go out of my way 2 C him in his emaculately groomed european style black suit W/ his emacuately groomed european style keyboard player. Sure they had a few native trinkets on but I got the distinct impression that he was 1 of us. Miller... what a fine Ojibwa name. It kind of pissed me off when he refered 2 the Ojibwas as the 'Chippawas' which is what the white people call them. Bill Miller is a good european style guitarist though. Good thing Jeff was there or this 1 may have slipped thru the cracks. Actually between Courtney, JB, Jeff, & myself we constituted a nook quorum. JB & I played Cowards & Greenland Whale Fisheries 4 Jeff on Sunday AM. 2 my knowledge the only JanglePoets there were TKs & myself which I would say is just a little shy of a quorum. We had fun though. Monday evening Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus Of Dreams made their 1st Philadelphia appearence @ the Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. It was the Monday evening showcase featuring David Morreale, a singer/ songwriter who I 1st saw @ SMAF in the new songwriter's contest W/ Cadence Carroll, & 3/4ths of the Slambovians. Tink (cello, accordian) had 2 stay home W/ the kids, but never the less Sharkey, Tony, & Joziah almost rocked the roof off the Point. Joziah is originally from Phila. & many of his relatives showed up 2 support him. It had been years since many of these folks had seen Joziah & the Circus was very well recieved X this enthusiastic audience. Larry, Kevin, & Steve came up from Atlantic City & all agreed it was worth the ride. The following night the Circus boys were planning on driving up 2 the Ironic Horse, hopefully 2 audition 4 Patty @ the Horse's open mic. They were worried they may not get a spot. Is there any1 out there who caught Gandalf Murphy 2nite @ the Horse? I would B very interested in hearing how things worked out 4 them. Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus Of Dreams is a band that U folkniks R going 2 hear a lot about in the next few years. They're ripe & now is the time 2 CHECK IT OUT! 4 more info. U can catch them @ Clearwater & FRFF this summer.
