The Towne Crier Cafe is a fairly long ride 4 me & I arrived there sometime not long after 8PM, because I like 2 take my time. It's around 250 miles 1 way. Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus Of Dreams have played the Crier about 2 - 3 times a year since Phil 1st discovered them a couple of years ago & they ALWAYS put on a blow out show worthy of a 250 mi ride. The Crier is the Circus' Iron Horse so 2 speak... Slambovian ground zero. This time around we we're treated 2 a couple of brand new tunes that will B featured on their new CD which they R just putting the finishing touches on. Check out 2 hear the Slambovians 4 yourself. Larry & I crashed @ Joe's place in Bethel, CT, had coffee W/ Joe & once again set out on the road, he heading home 2 AC & I beelining down 2 old town Phildelphia 4 the 1st Annual XFS (Xtreme Folk Scene) Spring Mosh in the Fireman's Memorial Hall featuring The Acoustic League Of Justice, Ten Spiders, & the absolutly SMOKING Groovelily. I heard N&K NiELdS were in town but I sure didn't C much publicity about their show. Since I had committed 2 the Groovelily show B4 the Sedgewick was even announced the choice was clear. I was just going 2 have 2 tolerate all the beef & beer I could eat & drink... just this once. I really don't think it's appropriate 2 mention X name all of the nook people I bumped in2 in the beer line... Let's C there was Paul... & Charlie... & Delilah... & Charlie... & Erika... & Charlie... & Paul... & Charlie... & Court... & Charlie. Most of the front row from N&K's KoP show was in the beer line @ 1 time or another. I even saw GENE SHAY checking out the veggie lasagna. The show kicked off W/ The ALJ a 4 piece non traditional acoustic combo W/ the classic bluegrass configuation of banjo, fiddle, guitar, & upright base. Bill Dominic on fiddle is the Philly area's premier jazz virtuoso, & B4 the show I had the great pleasure of introducing him 2 Val Vagoda (Groovelily) & in4ming him that he had finally met his match. Bill is an associate of the late, great Stefan Grappelli & plays very much in the style of the former master. Ray Duffy on the banjo always brings out the best in Bill & these 2 artists alone were worth the price of addmission. @ this point in the show my conduct is begining 2 come in2 question. It's like I'm being enveloped X a fog that gradually grows thicker & thicker... I know Ten Spiders took the stage but the fog was making it really hard 2 C & hear. I remember the light fragmenting off of Maria's electric banjo & splintering in2 a thousand strands of rainbow light. The bass was pounding... A face full of green untrustwothy Zully teeth... Smiley Green & the 10th Spider, spining around the room, groaning & smiling that green tide smile. The volvo Buddha pulls me outside & sais "here, light this." A wisk of sweet burnt offering rises 2 the heavens... Standing in the food line I'm talking 2 a woman W/ SERIOUS cleavage who's telling me how she hates 2 wear clothes. This never happens @ a NiELdS show... I get 2 tell Gene Shay about last weeks 'stranger than fiction' moment of syncronicity when he played Life Is Large on his show & we heard it in the SMAF parking lot off of the Kennedyville (WKHS-90.5FM) relay. The fog is turning in2 a thick Rhode Island chowder... the kind W/O milk or tomatoes (hey, did I spell that right?) & sans clams. Sans clams? What, we have no clams @ an XFS event? What's W/ all the beef? Hey, where's the beef? Nothing but light beer left & Groovelily hasn't even hit the stage yet? Light beer? Who drinks light beer when U can just add H2O 2 REAL beer? Dispite all these non consistancies Groovelily was superb. I have been blown away everytime I have ever had the privledge 2 B in their presence. The XFS Spring Mosh would have been no Xception, Xcept... the sound company was so inadequit that DRUNK PEOPLE ON DOPE could have provided better sound reinforcement. Even Gene Shay was disappointed & had 2 rebuke the 'don't give a shit' moron on sound. Never again will I patch out of a Sony. He completely ruined the XFS recording. I should have known since Sony is 4 punk amatures. Even thru all the chowder in my head I should have been able 2 understand what the band was saying. EVERYTHING just came out garbled. Charlie Sweeney could have done better than that! I hope the monitors on stage sounded better so mayB Groovelily will come back 2 the XFS someday but I wouldn't blame them if that moron NEVER does their sound again. I wish I had his card so I could put him on the black list. Anybody out there know the name of this sound company? It isn't appropriate 2 mention them X name but I neglected 2 get their card. Actually they were so amaturish that it would surprize me if they had a card. I had 2 leave my car there & ride W/ the Buddha. The Buddha wasn't driving either but had made arrangements 2 have us transported from the XFS nirvana once we had Xpended every last effort 2 spew on the vital organs of the last remaining available... Well, that's another story. So my humble apologies 2 N&K, but... no beef... no beer... no partygirls... no Groovelily &... no tears in my beer. Thanks 4 posting the Sedgewick setlist Bern. I believe I've seen that show quite a few times. Did N&K mention anything about the release date of their next CD? I can't wait. All 4 a mere 500 miles. What a deal.
