THis is Pat from We're About 9, and I just wanted to say thanks a million for coming out this past week. The Godfrey Daniels show with the Kennedys was more fun than we could have hoped for (thanks to Bruce and Bern and Cone and anyone else I missed who came out for that one). Also, the Susquehanna festival, though the attendance was pretty low, was a great success in terms of fun and people meeting people. We made some great new musician buddies (Cadance Carroll, SONiA, Lisa Beth Weber) and generally had a blast. Thanks to anyone who made it out. We hope we'll see some shining Nook faces at the June 7 K&N show we're opening at the Cellar Stage in Baltimore. big love, Pat/WA9 Yahoo! Bussed out there (someone accused me (falsely!)of smoking in the bathroom! - not an EZ person), rode back to philly with bruce, went to work, got picked up by Ken (who totally rocks), got to the birchmere, crashed at my dear friend's house in Alexandria after the show, walked to the metro stop, hung out in DC for an hour, met up with my friend from Dublin and her parents at their hotel in Pentagon City and got dropped off right at my door, four hours later. Lots and Lots of mileage. This was truly one of those Nooker/Jangleur moments when everything just fell into place for me. It was great. I wanted to post the kennedys setlists, but I neglected to bring them with me. A few things I'd like to point out: 6/7/2002 The Nields/We're About Nine @ Cellar Stage in Baltimore. All you folks down there, make this show and don't miss the opening act! Pat, Brian, and Katy are AWESOME! You will not be disappointed, but bring an extra tenner so you can buy their CD. I have to be in a wedding that day :-( This is also the day when The Kennedys come back to the Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, for those Nookers further North. 5/11/2002 N+K Nields @ the Sedgewick. Is anyone else going? Tickets are 15 in advance but 18 at the door, so you may want to save three dollars. TK doing EZ PPL was my personal high point of the birchmere show. They played it the night before and were actively seeking input after the show about whether to play it @ the b-mere. (Kate and I made a strong case on the pro platform - we rock) Maura seemed concerned that Nields fans would resent their take on it. Not only did everyone love it as much as I did (saying a lot), N+K seemed really moved, and I saw Maura wipe away a tear or two at the end of the song. Glad I wasn't the only one moved to tears. Another high point was being asked to sing along on "The Sweetness." N+K don't always ask us to sing along, and I personally try really hard not to, esp if I'm near the front, but I think we all sounded pretty good. And I'm glad we got to express our devotion by knowing all the words already! Yay for singing nields fans! I know it's been three days already, but this cup runneth over. I'm going to read what everyone else has to say and maybe put in some more cents later on. It was so super nice seeing everybody (Don, I missed you AGAIN! though I saw the back of your head) and you all were a big reason why I wanted to go to this faraway show. It was so well worth it and the Kennedys/Nields combination is simply to die for. Katryna and Maura intimated that they will be joining forces again in December. YEE-HAW!!! "I'm so busy this December. There are places I should be..." later, everybody. have a great tuesday. bern, reminding everyone to love your mom especially hard on Sunday. Depending on the mood, I may prefer the original from Play or the duo version from Live From Northampton. Having said that, I'm also happy to hear The Kennedys do Easy People. This is one of those songs that, to me, just fits Maura's voice perfectly - or her voice fits the song perfectly - whichever. Ken So contented from seeing The Nields and The Kennedys again - the first time for either since January. Not to mention seeing Lynn Miles and Eric Taylor the next night. Something very magical happened last Sunday but so as not 2 diminish the wonderous nature of the 'coincidence' I must backtrack a little & save the best 4 last. It seems we've (mid-atlantic) been getting quite a good deal of badly needed rain lately. On the way up 2 Bethlehem last Thursday I drove between 2 off set storm cells moving from east 2 west, outrunning 1 below & behind me, & just missing 1 above me moving off over Philadelphia 2 the east. The timing was perfect & gave me dry pavement 4 most of the run up 2 Godfrey Daniels. When I arrived We're About 9 was soundchecking, TKs were in the house, & friends from near & far were begining 2 show up. Even Mike Space was in a good mood 4 a change. We're About 9 opened the show W/ a set that was nothing less than superb. Whatever IT is, WA9 is overflowing W/ IT!!! It seemed pretty much every1 who was paying attention was floored X their tight vocal harmonies, great sence of timing, & the impecible arrangement of their all original compositions. I predict that Pat Klink, Katy Graybeal, & Brian Gundersdorf will become household names in the ever Xpanding world of independant folk musik. Brian has all the kharisma of, dare I say it... a latter day David Bowie. He's a natural, & they each possess a great natural sence of timing & wonderful voices. I would suggest U catch them now B4 they're 'discovered' because these three troubadors were born 2 sell out... shows, that is. Remember, U heard it here on the Nook 1st. Don't take my word 4 it, go out & catch this trio while tickets R still available. Tell them Cone Head sent U & U may win a prize... ah, but don't quote me. TKs were so impressed W/ WA9's natural sence of motion that they invited them on stage as the WA9 Dancers who also provided back up chorus on Life Is Large. After that they were encouraged 2 remain on stage & provide more than adequit vocal harmony on several tunes. Run Redlights never sounded so good, but the climax was a rabble rousing Maura B. Goode. WA9 had every1 cracking up W/ their unusual stage antics & quirky dancing, including P&M, who had never seen them B4 but hired them based on the merits of their 1st CD entitled Something Important With Your Life. Their next CD is being produced X Andy & Denise, has been recorded, & will B available sometime later this year. When U hear these artists U're going 2 want 2 turn all your friends on 2 them. Check it out! From Bethlehem I made my way down 2 Darlington (NOT Havre De Grace), MD 2 the site of the 1st ANNUAL Susquehanna Music & Art Festival. I was the 2nd person there arriving sometime after 4AM. The 1st person there was 1 of Journey Bear's cronies, Jim Higgins from Florida. The next car 2 arrive was carrying Nook person Jonie Lehman. If it wasn't 4 Jonie I wouldn't have known about what turned out 2 B the cooest festival 4 miles around. Thanks Jonie, I owe U 1. There R not a lot of things that could keep me away from a HaHaHa show, especially since I had been looking 4ward 2 it 4 months, but when I found out that my services would not B required @ the B-mere (Jeremy knows why), it became obvious that Cadence Carroll in the songwriters contest would B a much more PRODUCTIVE way 2 spend my time. Cady didn't win anything but I know she was glad that some of her friends turned out 2 support her. Actually, Cady should have won but methinks it was rigged because she had very little competition on that stage. Friday evening concluded W/ 3 very impressive sets from Commond Bond (from CommonGround Bryn Athen), Terri Allard, & Tom Prasada-Rao W/ Friends including Terri Allard & SONiA Rutstein. I had never seen any of these great artist B4 & I must say I didn't even miss the redundant Orphangirlarama. Actually I'm kind of glad I missed that 1... I'm all Orphan Girled out. I never did like that song very much. I'd rather hear I'm So Loathesome I Could Shit. Cady Carroll waking U up in your car so U don't miss breakfest is a great way 2 start any day. I 'worked' a little bit until WA9 hit the stage about mid afternoon &, IMO, stole the mainstage show. Once again the layed down an impeccible per4mance, spellbinding all 30 people who showed up 4 the festival on Saturday. Jeff Straus was there 2 help me document this 1st, but hopefully not last SMAF. Between Jeff, Jonie (Henry&Jamie), Charlie (Sunday), & myself we constituted a quorum.1 of the girls from the office where I 'work' brought her 1 year old & we enjoyed a kid's show W/ John Flynn. Now everybody thinks I'm Brody's dad. Now I would B proud 2 B Brody's dad, but he's not mine folks, I just 'work' W/ his mom, honest... she's married 2 Brody's dad. The afternoon progressed W/ the Maryland Songwriter's Showcase, MC'd X Brian Gundersdorf featuring Steve Key, Claudia Sansousie, Lea, Neil Phillips, Andy & Denise, WA9. A&D joined WA9 2 provide back-up on a tune from their upcoming CD. It was a real treat 4 the 20 or so folks in the audience, most of whom were artists playing @ other times. In the evening I got 2 C David Roth & some of SONiA's show. It was the 1st time I had heard either. I wished I could have stayed 4 SONiA's whole show but duty called & I had 2 play guitar all X myself in the info booth until after the show was over. Hopefully I'll find a copy of the SONiA per4mance some day. She was very kharismatic. SONiA announced that Disappear Fear is re4ming & going in2 the studio soon. Good news 4 all the Fearheads! I just couldn't stay awake 4 the song circle featuring WA9, Cady, Annie Wentz, Kristy Apps, John Gallager, Lizabeth Webber, & quite a few folks I don't know. The SMAF was almost perfect in every regard W/ the exception that @ no time was there more than 50 or so paying customers on the grounds @ any 1 time. In this regard it was very special, because it became a festival of artists per4ming 2 an audience of their peers. In years 2 come everybody & their mother will claim 2 have been @ the 1st SMAF but those of us who really were there were treated 2 the kind of per4mances that will rarely B repeated. I woke up Sunday because it was next 2 impossible 2 sleep thru all that neo-gospel earsore. Hearing Cady shout "Hey Cone" across the field as I crawled out of my Honda was just what I needed 2 take the edge off the gospel. Sonny Ochs led a Tribute 2 her brother Phil from the mainstage which restored my faith in the truth X mid afternoon. I was standing in the parking lot when Groovelily tore on2 the site. I narrowly missed becoming their hood ornament as they blew by me laughing & waving. Now the show was about 2 enter a new phase... the rocking phase! Words can not Xpress how impressed I M W/ Groovelily. U'll just have 2 go C 4 yourself, which U can do in Philly this coming Saturday if U've had enough 'heart on your sleeve/ tears in your beer'... Caroline Aiken, Nedra Johnson (I didn't think she'd ever finish), & finally we come 2 Greg Greenway. Cady had introduced me 2 Greg B4 but this was the 1st time I'd heard him do a whole set. Greg is fantastic... a very funny man indeed. Greg invited Cady as well as SONiA & many others on stage 2 finish his set. Which brings us 2 the Kennedys, the perfect end of an almost perfect weekend. The show ended W/ over a dozen artists on stage W/ P&M, bringing it all home. It would seem that this should B the conclusion 2 a truly magical line-up, but... As the show ended I retreated 2 the parking lot 2 have a smoke W/ a couple of friends who I don't C that often. They had driven down from PA on my recommendation after I showed them a video of Groovelily & The Kennedys. So we're sitting in the van & on comes the radio. This is definately radio free Maryland so I suggest WKHS (Kennedyville High School) 90.5 FM which is used as a WXPN relay durring the evenings & weekends. Life Is Large comes cascading thru the speakers in the van! It's the Gene Shay show & he has just put on LIL! "I knew a woman..." We all looked @ each other in amazement! "Didn't we just hear this? Is this some kind of a trick?" All of a sudden it hit me... WASTED AWAY AGAIN IN KENNEDYVILLE!!! I mean, what R the odds? My friends think I'm some kind of wizard, or Xtraterrestrial, or something. Personally I don't believe in co-incidence but THIS I M @ a loss 2 Xplain.
