I'll start with the negatives, because there aren't many, and they don't have anything to do with the music (ok, except for the last one). The negatives: Their cheeseburgers SUCK! I'm somewhat of a cheeseburger connoisseur, and The Birchmere's cheeseburger is right at the bottom of the list. They should have snacks for people waiting in line. Ok, maybe they shouldn't, but wouldn't it be cool if they did? (as long as they weren't leftover cheeseburgers from the night before, which is what I think I was served). The music ended. The positives: Nerissa & Katryna The Kennedys The Kennedys cover "Easy People" with guest appearance by N&K The Kennedys "Why Wynona Why", which almost had me on the floor Nerissa & Katryna and The Kennedys playing together with Dave Chalfant Dave Chalfant (who's producing both the new Stephen Kellogg and the new Flora Reed Cds) Amelia (who really wanted to get out of mom's arms and walk around the stage during Irene) All These Years (my favorite song on L&C) This Happens Again and Again sans amplification A potential new song "Assembly of Juice" Enemy Called Pants (my favorite) The first encore. The 3 songs, This Girl, While My Guitar, and Orphan Girl were just amazing The "Ticket to My House" t-shirts. Love the color (blue) and the Katryna toon on the front. The Kennedys put on a great energetic set, starting with "Pick You Up" for a change, and continuing with a great mix of new songs, old favourites, and less frequently heard songs too. Magical moments included "Easy People", during which Nerissa and Katryna came onstage to sing backup. Never having heard The Kennedys cover it before, the sisters were obviously really moved. Pete Kennedy, as N&K ran onstage holding hands, announced that "A couple of angels just came onstage." Also, when they did "Blackbird", Pete and Maura let the audience do the vocals alone. The audience was remarkably powerful and on-pitch. Twas very intimate, reaffirming that the audience is such a part of the show. Getting to hear a couple of the new songs again was a treat, which make me all the more impatient for "Get It Right" to come out: it's going to be an amazing album! The Nields also put on a really tight show. All but five (out of twenty not including encores) songs were either from "Love and China" or toy songs (I finally got to hear the much acclaimed "Enemy Called Pants"!). Dave Chalfant played guitar and bass on several of the songs, which added a lot. The stage patter was right on too. During her intro for "Love and China," her expression on when she reminded Peter Beckett that he was not supposed to get famous, so it was okay that they were taking his best song, and his response of "D'oh!" were priceless. During the intro for Tailspin, she announced that "Falling in love is about the craziest thing that you can do." Mull over that, Nields fans. Lastly, her intro for "Ticket To My House", partially involving her planning to run away from home to her church when she was a kid, explained a lot about the meaning of the song. The Nields and The Kennedys need to play together more often! (They hinted that this was in the works, btw.) My favourite moments were when all 5 of them (Maura, Pete, Nerissa, Katryna, and Dave) were playing together. What a killer 5-piece band! It's obvious too that they have so much love, affection, and admirition for each other; it's a pleasure to see and hear them interact. Still reeling from so many ecstatic moments and easy people, ~Rebecca "Music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all But you are you music While the music lasts" (T.S. The Kennedys' version is wonderful. It is different than TN's version, in that Pete & Maura have made it thoroughly "their own" by doing it in their very own personable style. It is *so* pretty and so touching the way Maura sings it! :-) The Kennedys *are* Easy People! :-) And Adolphe Appia, my shy Swiss hero with the stutter, wrote "The Work of Living Art," too. :-) "Living Art" is when life itself *is* a living work of art. There is so much more to Easy People than just the song. It is a whole way of life, and P&M exemplify this as well as anyone I know. :-) The Kennedys played a really crisp set at Godfrey Daniels on Thursday night to a very enthusiastic crowd who gave them a standing ovation. We're About 9 played an impressive opening set as well. Kennedys set lists: Set 1: Strangers in the Night Wipe Out (Pete did the drum solo on his cheeks, which was cute) River of Fallen Stars Angel & You Half of Us Get It Right Rappahannock (Natalie's request) Hotel Paradiso Commerciale Bells & Loaves & Letters (Bern's request) Bend in the River (for Natalie again, cause her sister's name is reminiscent of the line "Seeking redemption, searching for grace" --- see, both TN and TK sing songs about love, redemption, and grace :-) Set 2: Maura's Ice Fishing Joke Life Is Large w/ We're About 9 Just Like Henry David w/ We're About 9 Why Winona Why Pearl's Eye View Didn't It Rain (my request for a "rain" song) Blackbirds singalong Orange Blossom Special medley w/ Pink Panther theme Not Fade Away w/ Purple Haze Life Is Large w/ We're About 9 1st encore: Run Red Lights w/ I Saw Her Standing There singalong Maura Be Good 2nd encore: Easy People Next time: The Kennedys at the Birchmere! Then TK joined them for HaHaHa: Jeremy Newborn Street (P&M on Beatlesque background vocals) Love Me One More Time (Maura did 3-part vocals with N&K; Pete played a wicked awesome guitar part; Dave C on bass) Yesterday's Girl (Maura on la-la-la's; Pete bass; Dave C guitar) Sweetness (Maura harmony; Pete guitar solo; Dave C bass) Keys to the Kingdom (same as The Sweetness --- Pete was rippin' on guitar) HaHaHa Encore ensued. Nerissa said how honored they were to play Beatles songs with TK. This Girl (same configuration as The Sweetness and Keys) While My Guitar Gently Weeps (this was the centerpiece of the HaHaHa set --- TK sang the first verse --- P&M both played guitar; Dave C on bass --- N&K sang the rest of the verses --- Pete played 2 guitar solos --- I just wrote "WOW" in my little notebook) Orphan Girl (Maura sang verse 1; Nerissa sang verse 2; Katryna sang verse 3; Maura, Nerissa, & Katryna 3-part vocal trio on verse 4; Pete on guitar harmonics; Dave C on bass --- very lovely) Second HaHaHa Encore: Goodnight Irene (completely unrehearsed: Maura sang harmony; Pete guitar solo; Dave C bass --- Amelia alternated between putting the melodica in her mouth, trying to grab the microphone out of Katryna's hand, trying to wriggle free from Katryna's other free hand, trying to walk, wanting to be picked up again, and watching Pete play guitar; overall, a wonderfully multifaceted performance not only by Amelia, but also by her mom who had to sing the lead vocal on verses 1 and 3 all the while tending Amelia) "Love and China" may be about things that break, but TN and TK together are a match made in heaven. A few highlights for me: The song "Get It Right" - as always. I think this may turn out to be my favorite Kennedys song. Easy People. TK do a very nice version of this. N+K joining was a bonus. And it's nice to have Harry's video as a keepsake, even without N+K. Thanks, Harry. Heard a couple of songs from the upcoming Get It Right CD for the first time. Blackbird. "Maura B Goode" - so cool. Dave C playing with N+K on some songs. I just wish that Pete would have taken bass on While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Dave would have played the lead. Not that I'm complaining about Pete's lead on WMGGW - I just liked Dave's at the Iron Horse in December even better. Snowman. Every time I hear this, I'm a little more impressed. This has got to be one of THE greatest songs ever written. Then Nerissa's performance tops it off to make it one of the most powerful songs ever. This Happens Again And Again. This is not even close to being my favorite song on Love and China, let alone in the entire Nields canon. But N+K do such a nice unplugged version of this, that it's one of the highlights of the show. The two sisters have such "presence". As I've noted before, there is a lot of charisma happening there. Amazing. Everything that N+K+P+M+D did as a group. As I already mentioned in another post, the three part harmonies on This Girl and Orphan Girl. For me, this was the capstone on a great evening of music. A second, unrehearsed encore. Hope this means N+K+P+M+D left feeling good about the audience reaction. Bernadette introduced me to Pete and Maura after the show. Thanks, Bern. Got to have a few words with Pete, but I kept it short so I wouldn't turn into an "obnoxious fan". Thanks to Bruce (and someone else?) who saved seats. Ken Still in a daze from a long weekend of travel and good music.
